I don't know why you think the 4.5 will be the lowest common denominator for development but it won't. The 4 will still hold games back for parity.

I thought the upgrade was for the VR headsets.  Which is resonable since the VR is new tech and they made it so their ps4's can adapt to it.  They did make it clear that you will be able to play all the games without the upgrade.  I would assume that you cant use the VR without the upgrade but it looked like you could.

Sony said that nothing can be exclusive to the 4K. Literally the only thing the 4K can offer is nicer graphics and/or higher frame rates. Kinda cool in that non-4K owners won't feel like they're "forced" to upgrade.

Yeah but that's the first step in realizing that you can have en evolving game experience that isn't centered on a whole new machine.

"Consoles are not cell phones. There is not precedent for this, only the shattering of an implicit trust that consoles would be performance-upgrade safe for their lifetime."

There is a precedent for this, Christopher needs to look at wider gaming. This is the age of making money every which way. Be it from mobile phone upgrades, TV upgrades, dlc, pre-order bonuses, casino gameplay in MMO's. This is the application of money making business practise right across the entertainment industry not just gaming.

Is there a way they can make you pay more? Make you pay for something else? Somebody is looking at that right now.

MMOs we have gone from flat rate pay per month to pay every which way.

Solo Games we have gone from paying for a box to pre-order and dlc.

As to hardware everything comes with a topping of insurance and "future proofing".

    KER-CHING!

I own a PS4 and don't see a big deal. It's a relatively cheap device. I do think MS and Sony under hardwared there devices from the beginning though.

For you it's cheap, for me when I was a kid, my parents wouldn't buy me a console, I had to earn the cash myself which was an all-summer type thing before I could buy myself... a Gamecube. :/

Not everyone is rich and can blow $400-600 on a game machine every few years, or wants to.

In the PC versus Console debate upgrading your console every 3 years is cheaper than upgrading your PC, especially if the console has good backwards compatibility. Right now you can buy a PS4 for $350 and an XB1 for under $300. That is a reasonable upgrade cost every 3 years or so especially since the upgrade isn't mandatory.

That's debatable, Torval. $300 would easily upgrade a PC to a higher video card than anything even in the next console iteration. It really depends on what you're starting with.

Will they ( Sony ) or any retailer be offering any large credit for PS4 trade in toward the new version ( 50%+ )?

We shouldn't see this as a zero-sum game. A loss for console gamers is a loss for all of us, PC or otherwise.

Just like to point out that the Neo will be upscaling to 4k.. not performing at 4k natively. There is a massive difference when it comes to rendering 3D video game engines. Game resolution and image resolution are not the same thing. Sony knows this.. and are going to fool a lot of people if the world isn't properly educated on the subject. "4k at 60fps!".. when really you have 1080p or 720p running at 60fps and then the video image is upscaled to 4k. How does that benefit your gaming? It doesn't, in any way.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
