EQ... hm...

I am curious, this is not a flame post... not at all...

Ok...

Have any of you ever played another game besides EQ?
How many of you have quit newer games and went back to EQ?
How many of you went to EQ2 then went back to EQLive?
How many of you played on an EQ pvp server hardcore?

The reason I ask is... I played on a pvp server since EQ was my FIRST mmorpg and I was smitten, did'nt realise that pvp servers were different until it was down one day and I got on mith marr, started on mith marr and never went back... Because I met some friends on there. Today I wish I started on Tallon Zek, because I hada horrible experience in EQlive on mith marr. Went to a game as crappy as AC2 afterwards, and I loved it so much more but quit pretty soon afterwards.

I came back to EQ recently, and I must say It was a waste of 12 bucks... I cannot understand why my mind was smitten with such glee when I was playing for 2 years... This was the single most crappy experience of my MMORPG life, I tried to play again but it was just too horrid to manage. After 20 minutes I quit again and uninstalled, the friend I played with was a 65 ranger, and he was tossing around "My ranger rules" Which I was not used to. He asks me the next day "Why are'nt you playing man?" I replied simply "How are you playing man?" he had never tried another game before And I was curious if he knew there was a light outside...

Same reason I am posting here today... EQ was magic... what happened to it? And why is it so repulsive now?

This is my history, not counting beta testing or free trials I may have tried, but only games that I actually bought the retail for: I played UO before EQ, and briefly returned to UO after about few months, but then returned to EQ. While I was playing EQ, I played AC (quit and went back to EQ), DAoC (quit and went back to EQ), and AO (more than once, went back to EQ after each time). I quit EQ for several months. and after a quick visit in December, went out and bought WoW, which I've played without returning to EQ, although I have been tempted. Recently purchased SWG ("The Total Experience"), which I had played before back in beta. Kinda thinking about getting a Station Access subscription so that I can poke around in EQ1 from time to time too.

I've never played EQ2. Probably will try it eventually, after I settle into my new job/schedule.

I tried Tallon Zek once and played on Sullon Zek for a while, but I didn't care for pvp in EQ.

I didn't enjoy EQ so much when I went back in December because most everyone I knew before had left and everyone else had moved on. Also, since there were a couple of expansions we missed, we (my husband and I) felt like we were really far behind everyone else, and the thought of getting the expansions and settling in to grind to 70 was enough for us to decide we'd rather give WoW a try. It can be a little like walking out of a movie after 5 minutes, and then coming in for the last 5-- you have no idea what's going on or why everyone else seems so enthralled with what's going on.

In retrospect, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had concentrated on duoing with my husband in older zones, or if I had started over from scratch with a new character.

Q1 )Yes, I've played several other games, if I can remember them, Horizons, WoW, DAoC, FFXI, Earth & Beyond, Lineage II, and there may have been a few others, along the way. Some of these, I even had the fortune to Beta a few of these.

Q2 )As you can see, EQ was my first MMORPG. Since then I have tried the others, but I've always returned. EQ just seems to have more of what I want in an online game (more bugs than I'd like, too, but <sigh>).

Q3 ) I did not do the EQ2 beta, nor did I try the commercial version. From all my friends and guildies that did, I have heard nothing that appeals to me. In fact, everyone I know, in RL or in game (EQ) that left EQ for EQ2, has either returned to EQ or moved on to other games. I feel no loss.

Q4 ) I have never even logged into one of the PvP servers. I have some friends that have and .... there are times I wish I had. I spent to much time and effort on my current main to start over, but when you run into an a$$hat... I just fear griefers, to much. That and the fact that RPG is fairly uncommon in the game world these days (Paladins should not be able to just decide on a whim to kill someone in their group, because they don't like them or don't want to share loot).

I have slowly come to the opinion that the magic is not gone out of the game, rather it has gone out of the players. The magic, to me, seems to be one of discovery, of newness. Once you have spent some time in the game, travelled the paths and seen what there is to see, once you have mastered the AI of the game, then that is when the "magic goes away". Just my opinion as I have found that I can rekindle the feeling by finding and helping newbies who have yet to experience these things (or the burnout from the lvl grind).

I'd like to see more replies, but I have played more mmorpgs than even which are in my profile, Im currently waiting for a game to be "like EQ the first time I played it" I can remember too, I logged onto freeport and there was a huge sandstorm. I honestly... loved the effect that night had on my character making a fire beetle eye something to covet. I won't say I hated EQ because I would'nt have played SB if not for EQ but there were only 2 games ever that held so much... glee I guess.

EQ and SB - However for some reason in EQ it just got way to... repetative for me to play and I just... well it was friends that kept me going and they quit then I decided waiting for another game was better than playing this one.

Its just that in EQ, I guess its because I started on a PvP server is the reason why pvp is so important to me today, got to 27 with a Dark Elf Warrior and I think I had more fun with that character than any other...

SB was just simply amazing for the first 3 months, it was like watching a REALLY good show and your favorite character is the one your playing as.

It should'nt be too hard to find a game thats fits the bill of, Having found a new REALLY appealing huge world where I don't know if a enemy player or npc behemoth lies around the corner. I just like the rush I guess, thanks for the replies thus far, I'd like to see more =)

I played EQ for about a month when it first came out.  It was terrible, and it still is.  It was the first game company i can remember that said "HEY WE HAVE TONS OF PEOPLE PLAYING TOGETHER, LETS MAKE A SHITTY RPG STORYLINE AND NOTHING BUT GRIND"  Yup, pretty much explains that game.

I played DAoC off and on since its release, went hardcore from release-toa, then toa made me lose interest because of the grind.  The new server rules, however, see a return to the old great game, that first said "HEY WE HAVE TONS OF PEOPLE PLAYING TOGETHER, LETS GET SOME GODLY, MASSIVE, HORRENDOUSLY AWSOME FIGHTS GOING BETWEEN ABOUT 100 PEOPLE AT A TIME".

GG finding a game that has said that since.  BGs and RvR in DAoC is still the mmo industry's best model for a game creation.  The realms allow storyline and set up the confrontation NEEDED  for good gaming and pvp.

Played WoW for a while, then realized there was no end game, and like i said, returning to DAoC's new server rules beacause old daoc was pwn.

When will the mmo industry learn to create massive pvp fights?  Its what end game is all about and its why you have hundreds, even thousands, participating together.  If you just want a rpg, you might as well not pay monthly for it.

Yes i tried GW, and guess what, DOTA from WC3 is 100x better than GW, that's how bad GW is.

I was posting something somewhere else and realized that I forgot to mention that I also paid to play Underlight. I guess it slipped my mind because I didn't get a box. That game was a whole 'nother thing. I enjoyed it, but my husband hated it because he couldn't figure out what to do.

I pretty much always ignore the official storyline of any game I play, unless forced to participate in it. I'd much rather play out stories made up by players.

There was plenty more to EQ than just the grind, but it wasn't in the software. It was in the players, in my experience, especially at the beginning when every corner had something new on the other side and people didn't really know what could be done and what was really impossible.

I paid monthly for UO back in the full open PvP days, but I was paying for the RP, not for the PvP. I really hate singleplayer RPGs because there's no RP at all when you are interacting with the computer. The only fun RP happens when you have other people who behave in inconsistent, irrational, unpredictable ways... you know, just like real people. I don't necessarily want to play a game that's all about fighting, in any case. I can't imagine thinking that I was paying for the battles. Those are just incidental to some players.

    Just my opinion. YMMV.

    Q1 - Yes, DAOC, EQ2, SWG for a little
    Q2 - Yes, I have
    Q3 - I did
Q4 - Tried one and didnt like it.

You might not like the game because its a little old and the graphics on all the new games are so much better etc. Not saying that this is true for you but it is true for some people.

the edit is for a typo... and i guess this explanation::::35::
