Giving away their game for free and a 1 month sub.  Means they are getting desperate.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Dont know... Maybe more a way to get arses in the seats and lure back some people who left before WoD. =P

But desperate... It is not like they think they will ever get back to the glory days, the game is old and and on the way in to the sunset.

So they're already giving out a free week. You could tack that on and get 5 weeks of game play and a free level 90 boost. I probably will go see it.

It's a marketing strategy. Trust me, I'm not a big fan of WoW. But any MMORPG would use that chance to get in more customers. It's just how it works and trust me, it will work for them. Their revenue will skyrocket and the world will be huge. Question is whether they can keep them longer than a month...

Probably not desperate at all. They are most likely taking advantage of some sort of marketing synergy. Why wouldn't they?

The World of Warcraft movie is a 2+ hour advertisement to their game. Some people who see it will not be WoW players let alone "gamers" at all.

It piques their interest, there is a low barrier to entry with free game time, "why not?" they say.

Why wouldn't a company take advantage of that type of advertising? They would be stupid not to.

my issue is as soon as the movie and game time burn out they will be announcing some bullshit lie saying they have 10 million active subs again like they always conveniently do. MArketing things is great, its how businesses stay afloat and are successful but marketing spin afterwards will remind me to much of this election race in the states.

I hope this is not just a US only promotion ... where we Canadians get the short end of the Stick.

As a fan of vanilla WoW, I'm assuming the movie has appeal for you, yes? If you don't want the game time, etc., pitch the ticket stub and BOOM! Done! :)

I'm going, though without making any comparisons to the game other than vague names from lore. The script has abused the cannon so I'll separate myself from that, go to the Fork & Screen and enjoy it "as is". :)

The original story came out of France so it seems it's either going to be regional or perhaps even worldwide. :)

Well what speaks for it being at least more than one country is that Blizzard would never bury that much money to make entirely new models for a single country promotion.

Desperate, that's hilarious. This is a brilliant marketing ploy. Even if they kept 1% of the total going to see the movie for 1 month extra and pay for that sub, that will be huge cash. Not sure how desperation comes in.

Decade old game still doing better than any other in the genre (better than any ever have, outside of Asia), desperation indeed.....

I think that's a good move on their end. IF this happens to apply to my country as well, i will go and watch the movie in a cinema -and i'm far from thrilled by what i've seen in the trailer.

And i'm also saying that although i know that i will probably have to go to the cinema and watch it all alone -because not even my imaginary friends would want to watch the movie.

If it remains France or whereever only, i will download the movie over and over again and hope it sends a serious warning to Blizzard!!!1

On a sidenote: I'm also wondering why nobody in this thread has left a "that's a first step to F2P" comment yet.

When Microsoft released Windows 10 - Cortana was available in Brittan, the US, France, and a number of other counties ... not Canada ... Who thought we have that different of a vocabulary .. Hence my skepticism ..... eh

This movie will be awful. Not even free WoW would ever get me to waste money on this upcoming atrocity.

quoting you so i know to make sure you eat your words if it turns out to be a major success. And regardless if the movie will be good or not, it's gonna make Blizzard millions lol.

I go with desperate. Not insofar as subs go but regarding box office. And as the report surfaced in France: go go Asterix (new film due out).
