The main reason Wow even have that many players is people in Asia actually play them.
No one in Asia is playing any other mmorpg made in the United States.
While they continue said that most money of WOW made from the west , personally i think China server product more profit that Blizzard said. Chinese players pay for hours instead of monthly Sub . That's why in case of addict , they are no difference than F2P whale , even more.
with the release of black desert online, an mmorpg with gorgeous graphic, korean once again claim the throne. korean has done well since the start, from ragnarok online, lineage, tera, archeage and now bdo
while the west keep creating wow clone with wow graphic like wildstar
I think Camelot Unchained can "conquer" a lot of market. It obviously won't be as successful as Wow, but it should bring quite a lot of novelty to the genre. In fact this is the only project which I feel can achieve that at the moment.
@Promet is this Camelot Unchained Dark age of Camelot "follow-up"?
Yes, even made by the same guy directly
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
Someone already have, they were smart enough to get out of MMORPGs and went MOBAs and Card Games......Hearthstone and LOL is dominating if not conquering the online game market currently.
And don't forget the mighty MINECRAFT!!!
I don't think minecraft can sustain a genre of its own. Aside from minecraft, there aren't many other similar (or clone) games that are popular, unlike MOBAs or online shooters.

Hearthstone is basically Magic the gathering as a computer game, it doesn't have anything to do with MMOs at all. Lol have a small MMO factor but it seems to be taking more from Diablo and WC3 then any MMO.
So I don't see the relevance here, different kinds of games that have little to do with MMOs beside they are played online but you could play Quake onlikne as well...
Don't count out the MMO genre just yet, it might be a bit dark at the moment but that could change fast if the right game comes out.
The genre doesn't need monoliths. We don't need games that distort the entire market around them. the time for 1 game that rakes in 10s of millions of MMORPG players is over, and honestly I think we're better off for it. We don't need a conqueror.

Pretty much any "voxel game with building" or even "procedural exploration game with building" falls under the sights of being tagged as a 'Minecraft-like', even though Minecraft itself was influenced by its precursors Dwarf Fortress and Wurm Online.
The "best selling PC game to date"[1] is bound to generate some clones.

the next "conqueror" will be a game who's company is going with a totally different business model, and also will make a point to find ways to cater to players rather then limiting them. Imagine a game where everything that would have been in the cash shop is obtainable thru in game processes, no cash shop AND its F2P. "Well how will they make money ??" you ask.. advertising. This business model is completely viable and has been done by a lot of other games in the past. Its just that its not as profitable as the other business models...at first. With focus on removing limitations from players rather then adding them, and the true f2p model, the game will entice so many players to play that once the player base gets large enough the devs can basically write their own check with advertisers. And the market is super ripe for this to happen as well. most players (from what i can tell from alot of gaming forums) are starting to get tired of spending money on games that arent even close to worth it.. or worse, the games become vaporware. Developers have gone way too far with the rampant player farming thats happening in games today. Game developers seem to have the wrong idea of where the burden of the cost of the game should fall. Players should not have to pay for anything at all, ever. Thats what advertisers are for.

Wait so you want a game with ads all over it? Interesting idea, if the ads were baked into bilboards in the game and weren't popups it might be tolerable... but I'm not sure ads everywhere would make for a fun or immersive game.

The relevance is that the classical mmorpgs are no longer trendy, and other online games are now called MMOs by a variety of websites, industry research sites and devs.
You certainly don't need to agree with their classification, but you can't deny it is happening.
If anyone is to truly "conquer" the genre, they will need to create that epic sandbox foretold in legends that will offer enough variety and depth to appeal to players from both ends of the spectrum and everyone in between. A fantasy sims type game that killers, achievers, socializers and explorers can all call home.
That sounds like Skyrim online, I am sure Zenimax is taking notice.......oohhh wait.

I think Fallout Online could be perfect if made sandbox, but it's not happening anytime soon with Zenimax Online working on ESO.
It was and always has been Square Enix for MANY years but sadly they have changed their ways and are no longer the same regime. SOE is gone,Blizzard to me is laughable,Trion is a small Indie player. The Korean market has only recently gone for graphics but their game designs are still crap.
it is always about "potential" just because a developer COULD pull it off with greatness doesn't mean they will.Epic games for example COULD build us the greatest mmorpg ever seen on this planet but i doubt they would invest that much time and cost and effort to do it,everything in the gaming business is about speed to market and cutting costs. Any other developer come to mind?IDK really i see some potential from Zenimax for example but they do not build games the way i like to see them, they still look lime the same old "business" ended developer rather than a passion game builder.
Soulbound seems to be doing nice things with limited resources but lack of will always hamper this developer from doing great things.look at Chris Roberts, the guy got 110+ million free money and his game guaranteed will be crap,no better than an Indie developer not even as good as Trion's first RIFT effort. Bottom line is we should expert more of the same old,the market is brutally stagnant with no sign of advancing.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Doubt anyone will ever be able to make a game that will conquer the market.
First off society is changing and the internet is now becoming a common place to get just about any form of entertainment unlike 15 years ago where the choices were limited. Many have lost interest in MMORPG as a whole and have gone in different a direction to find entertainment which is more fulfilling.
Live streaming of television, movies (any genre), thousands of games (any genre) are now common place so the long term customer is less likely to exist.
The internet is overloaded with just way to many choices.
MMORPGs are stuck in a rut, they don't offer much variance than they did 15 years ago. Large business has bailed out and the dependence on high quality, large scale innovations has shifted to crowd funding.
Crowd funded MMOs will never intake enough money to implement their designs because even big business with 100's of millions can't afford to make them and turn a profit yet the enthusists will blindly throw their money at anything showing promise.
We can theory craft and speculate all day but in the end I think the first sentence is most correct.
