Earlier today I had what I think to be a fairly good idea for an MMO. It would sort of go deeper into the heart of Age of Empires. Everyone starts out as a peasant trying to build themselves up. The players would choose their 'class' by sort of being an apprentice to an older character. The peasants would follow around their older character NPC and do starting quests like finding some item so my master Blacksmith can make a new weapon or what not. Or that there is a tribe of nomads over the hill and I must either conver them (if my teacher was a priest) or destroy them (if my teacher was a warrior). As you progress your skills, you might be called upon by the leader of the city to help prevent an invasion from a closeby town. As you grow even more powerful your nation's king might ask you for help to lead an army to attack the nearby country. You might even break away from your home country to form a new country to try to control the entire world. You and your friends could start work on a few trebuchets (sp?) to add to your city's stockpile.
I do not plan on making the game, it is just an idea. Heak im only a High School Student with little computer language skills, I know that it would be quite hard to make this game even with a full staff of quality programmers and such. Its just an idea of something that I would really enjoy playing. So add ur comments on how you would like to improve my 'dream' game hehe. Maybe someday.

A game with an ever evolving and Dynamic enviroment sounds awesome. The only problem with that would be that you're putting too much control of the game in the hands of the community. And that could spell doom for the server. For one you'd have to have a huge number of in game mods running around tracking and monitoring alterations being performed by players. Alterations such as , like you said, starting a new government. The resources to run such a game would be staggering.
But I admit the freedom to do those things are extremely appealing and when a company produces such a game I'll be first in line to play it.
age of empires rox :P
