Why is World of Warcraft's Druid the only Shapeshifter in MMOs?

WoW did a lot of unique things

Only MMO as far as I know to allow you to play as the "undead" (forsaken). Very very few singleplayer games even allow that.

A demon summoning class (warlock), granted quite less unique as demon summoning is pretty common, but WoW did it perfectly

Only currently released MMO as far as I know for an unique starting area for each race. Only MMO (that I am aware of) that was released that was like that is Vanguard Saga of Heroes, which had an unique starting area for each race as well (it actually had more starting zones because it had more races)

WoW's shaman is very unique, not too many MMOs, if any (as far as I know), that is like the WoW shaman

It also has most content and paths to advancement than any MMO. From 1-60 you have a TON of zones you can choose to go through, each time you make a character its different because there are so many choices to go to. And that is VANILLA zones before expansion zones, no MMORPG (themepark) has that many vanilla zones to progress in. Most MMORPGs are a very small linear world, WoW is linear to a point, but you have a TON of choices of what zone to go to. Once past 60 the choices are more pigeonhold, but before that you get a ton of options. And a bit of options again in cataclysm zones. But then you can level through dungeons, or level through crafting/harvesting (possible yes, I've done it and made a ton of money doing it), or PvP or any number of things.

Vanguard saga of heroes also had a ton of options of which zone to go through, because so many zones to choose from that you could level pretty much anywhere you wanted in any direction you wanted (similar to WoW). It was also very similar to advancement in WoW, where you had a lot of choices of what to do to progress.

WoW did a lot of other things right, but those are things that pop out in my mind. Only MMO to come close to WoW is vanguard saga of heroes, but it died.
It closely followed Everquest in many ways except that it had quests, faster leveling, and easier dungeons.  EQ also had a unique starting area for every race.  Theoretically humans didn't have a place to start alone, but Qeynos and Freeport were human cities.  I'm not certain if Erudites are human, but they had their own starting location.

Vanguards class Psionicist could change race whenever... they had a bear shaman who could change into a bear.. also some gear would change you into something, like a mask that changed you into a panther.

GW2 has potions for shifting.  Flock of bats potion is cool and various other forms but most are forms you can't fight from.

Most of the other games are temporary shifts or illusionary forms. EQ2 the forms are all illusionary and don't change the skill set. My druid (warden) can shift into a lot of different forms, but it doesn't change his role.

The WoW druid was so much fun because I could shift forms (which was very visually appealing and immersive) and also shift function and skill sets. That set it apart.
You obviously didn't play the Vanguard Shaman, I could stay in wolf, bear or Phoenix form for as long as I wanted. All of these had different skill sets.

    No I didn't play a Vanguard shaman.
There you go, i played a druid in WOW and a Shaman in Vanguard, the Tuurgen shammy aka wolf could stay in stealth and fight in pet form or you could have the wolf fighting besides you as you could do with the other two shammy classes.

Three classes in one with all different spells, nah wow druid was good but not in the same ballpark as the shape shifting Vanguard Shaman.

Oh and did ii mention it was also one of the four healing classes just like the Druid which could go down the restoration path. Vanguard Shammy didn't need to take any healing path because it was a full blown healer.

UO has shapeshifting. Its not a class though. but one of the many things you can skill up in. Too bad the game is a steaming pile of poop now.

Sounds like Vanguard shaman is where WoW Druid idea came from.

ESO has werewolves... considering that as well as many posts written about other games, the OP might just need to explore the options other titles have a bit more.

If another game did they would call it a WOW clone.
Are you onto something or just on something?

I do not know about the other two, but ESO is a limited morph...so not really the same.

The original Everquest had Druids that can morph into wolves and morph the entire team. Enchanters had illusions that can make themselves look like any race, elementals and other creatures. I personally liked the Air Elemental illusion because it actually gave you Levitation.  There are also Petamorph wands that can morph your pet to look different.
