Let me let you in on a secret. Dota 2 is the most famous esport+sport in china. The players there are superstars.

They have their own viewing and streaming websites, which regularly bring ~6x more audience than twitch at peak.

Their population skews the math heavily, and it's entirely possible there to have been 100 million viewers of The international 5 in China :)

The appropriate age group to have definite interest in eSports (between 11-27 years old + male) is ~285 million, considering even quite a big number of girls follow dota, the number comes is probably somewhere closer to ~385 million potential viewers.

It's the same way that cricket has technically had more people following it than soccer at times in recent years, Indian + Pakistani fans skew the numbers heavily :)

    Just like

What else is shown on sports channels?
    Snooker?
    Dart?
    Shooting?
    Poker?

    All requiring athletic bodies?

    That pic proves nothing.

And just because those games are on sports channels, that run 24 hours everyday, to fill in air time and advertisement, is no different than listing random MMOs on a MMORPG site.

Lol, ok, Golf, Baseball (Pablo Sandoval popping belts, Bartolo Colon pushing 50), football (so many fat people that they can only play 16 games a season), plus a great number of olympic sports which require weight over athleticism. I'd like the sports, but it would probably be a shorter list to list those which require peak physical conditioning.

Their level of commitment eclipses that of regular athletes. "Professional" E-Athletes spend around 80 hours per week gaming, which is double that of college athletes or professional/olympic athletes. I know that the notion seems foreign because you believe that video games are trivial and anyone can do it. However, it's trivial and accessible in the same way that a baseball or basketball is accessible to me. Also, the assumption is that anyone can do it, which is a fallacy. Again, do I believe that I would have the ability to play basketball professionally if I spent 40 hours per week playing? Probably not. There are always factors that set a professional apart from someone who is a hobby enthusiast. However, feel free to prove me wrong and become a professional gamer, lol. Otherwise, unless you're training for the Olympic Games of "Talking Our Your Ass", feel free to show some factual evidence that says that anyone is able to be a professional gamer.

I would LOVE to see Morgan Spurlock do a documentary on it. Honestly, I don't know if it's willful ignorance, or just a lack of education. However, the west just does not want to accept that there is some amount of talent required that cannot simply be acquired through practice.

personally I thought the idea of e-sport was a good idea hell during the days of Quake LAN parties. I figured that once we saw 'esports' (didnt call it that then) with adds and adds for games on TV that gaming will be offically mainstream.

and here we are only about 25 friggin years later...lol

    Show me the numbers.

You're gonna start dropping terms like superstars and throwing around numbers like ~6x the audience, then link the proof that you're getting these numbers from.

I mean you quoted a post that has links to every claim I made, at least have the common courtesy to back yours up.

Arma 3 (vanilla) tends to be more serious, but so is the game for that matter

Mainstream as in ratings will be high enough to get noticed, and the espn commentator who quit because he didn't want to cover video games will have some second thoughts.
he didn't quit because of epsn televising esports.  just letting you know

The day I'm in my favorite "Sports Bar" and they turn just one of their 25 or so screens to an eSport match is the day I'll say such games are mainstream.

    Completely agree with this.

Now as far as Overwatch goes it does have that something that non mmorpg.com discussion posters like , which is something ( not referring to Kylerans post but others in this thread) seem to forget.

    This is not the "mainstream".

My wife and daughter watched me play last night for longer than they've watched any FPS , ever. They watched Battleborn for 5-10 secs and were not interested in the least.

This though was "easy" for them to follow and enjoyable. And enjoyable for me to play at the same time.

Blizzard knows damn well what they are doing and this will become one of the most watched FPS around.

I think this is the game that will finally do it. It's highly watchable, commentating easy to follow, highly competitive, shooter with a big name behind it. This will be the game to push Esports into the mainstream.
only thing overwatch will do is the heavy marketing blizzard is making, they are even making figurines of the champions already, I almost wish everything they do will be for nothing and blizzard will just get a huge loss on this all, but toomany fan boys around to let that happen.

and for the game himself, with the heavy marketing is the least showed, is weak and boring, plus you have the entrance price with others mobas don't.
FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

I don't understand how they could do closed/semi-open testing for 2 years on a game, tons of survey and player information gathering, put millions behind it in marketing, hype it so it has a huge following of specific characters months before release, and want to market it for esports (was their clear path and they haven't been shy about it either, for years) and yet no 21:9 support. Cuz what people really want to do is go watch pros play on jumbo-trons with screens mirrored and there are black bars on the side...when they got serious about TRYING to put HoTS into esports they pushed a 21:9 patch THAT week of announcement that they were even interested in doing such.

Throw another 62 million of your own money at a 350 million dollar+++ movie that's going to flop though. Smarter. Blizzard reminds me of some duck dynasty shit or hillibillies who win the lottery and are broke in ten years cuz they just spent it all on dumb shit like 50 jet skis and escalating, heated tree stands.

Also, if you consider that Overwatch , in part, engine included, is the remnants of their failed MMO that was supposed to come out and was scraped, it kinda makes you wonder what could have been. I remember all the source code and extra shit that was pulled by modders and hackers from the ORIGINAL vanilla WoW in like 04' and there were burning crusade and druid and dreamscape like areas and other shit already found and other things that were almost fully done that took forever to release or were never even implemented but then take 3 years to put out an expansion. "Cuz they want quality" no, because they cant make up their minds and with so much money and being part of activision there are too many cooks in the kitchen.
In the case of Overwatch it actually helped. Making a diverse and hybrid genre stand out when hybrid genre's third and fist person shooters with "other" elements are the big thing. They have definitely been ahead of the game for awhile now.

And while many will disagree I feel hearthstone is a solid and quality product. It actually replaced paper and online MTG for me but sadly they are starting to tinker too much when people start bitching. Oh no the trolls are complaining quick change it or we'll lose are millions of customers". No you won't. Half the people who bitch if not more never spent a penny. Blizzard needs to go back to basics and stop concerning themselves with trying to please the masses with every endeavor or nothing will ever get a full release or revamp. And stop messing with stuff that's not broken. The George Lucas syndrome will lead to Blizzard fully selling out, being consumed and their licenses ran into the ground or properties fully changed when Disney releases WoW2 AND THERES A 40 MAN RAID ON URSALA.
Keep talking about e sports and pro gamers but NEVER cater to the crowd with good rigs in any of their games. Nice when I have a titan X but have to buy overwatch for PS4 because my rig is too OP for your UI(why they claim they cant support 21:9, which is more joke than bullshit)_

It actually already is seen as a sport in alot of countries. There was an official statement somewhere but I have no time to search it now.

a pretty big chunk of chicks are gonna let let slide whatever the name of the sport is after they compute the dozen million you earn.

and after a few years when it gets around which eSport gives how many $ figures and which teams are top earners, suddenly by the power of social interaction magic, everyone's gonna know the teams and even ask you hey,hey do you play in that team maybe(you know the one that everyone earns 50 million at, ...)

I am a gamer and I think its foolish to sit and watch someone else play a computer game when they could go buy the game themselves and play it.  While some people will watch this, most people in western countries just will not watch this.  People in South Korea and China?  YEP.  People in the US love, Football, Hockey, Basketball and Baseball.  People in the EU and SA love soccer.

kind of funny that Gamers think because you make money for a very short period of time playing said game that they are going to get chicks because they made a few million dollars.

NEWS FLASH NORSEGOD!  Those women who will only care that you will make 6 figures or more will be gone once they money is gone dude.  Esports will not change that.  The Worse part of Esports is the fact that this year you can be so great and next year owned by players who figured out how to beat you.  You are not going to be top dog for years like you would if you were playing real sports.  Yea you might get hurt and end your career early but you have something called insurance which will pay you if you are injured at the highest level.  Esports, you are just a passing fade.

"Mainstream" usually means the public at large, such as, parents, politicians, entertainers, their dogs and cats, goldfish, etc.  I don't see the majority of these demographics playing e-sports.  ;)

If you want an example of something going "mainstream", just look at social media such as twitter and facebook.

Esports will be a reality in North America in the future I have no doubt. Might take us a little bit longer to jump on the Asian bandwagon, but it will come soon enough. I see people of all ages and backgrounds getting into it. I've read enough science fiction novels in my lifetime to not discount anything in the future. Will Overwatch break the mold if you will in North America? No clue but it could, and quite frankly it wouldn't shock me to see Betsy common housewife in a Gatorade commercial playing the game while her kids are running around in the background tearing the house apart.
