Following record-breaking sales, Ubisoft is already developing a movie based on its video game “Tom Clancy’s the Division,” and now looks to have an A-list star to lead the film.

Sources tell Variety that Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star in the pic based on the hit video game that has already become Ubisoft’s fastest-selling product.

Gyllenhaal is also attached as a producer, and the studio is currently looking for a writer to pen the adaptation. Ubisoft could not be reached for comment.

Feels a little early for this to me.

But if Jake Gyllenhaal has signed up for it, then I'm in.  He has a hot track record for picking good scripts and great roles recently.  He's a phenomenal actor.  The difference in roles between Nightcrawler and Southpaw, for instance, is just awesome.

You know....I think it would honestly work better as a movie. I mean, the Assassin Creed movie coming out with the dude who played young Magneto (name eludes me) looks pretty good too so never know.

Perhaps after all the years we have finally come to an era in which movies based on videogames aren't bound to fail anymore.

I haven't seen Southpaw, but Nightcrawler and Enemy were great movies.

Agreed, it's Michael Fassbender btw :+1: .  I'm not a fan of the games.  Although, I enjoyed the second one but was never seduced into purchasing any of the sequels.  But I imagine the game is enjoyable to those who like the series.

Anywho, he is an amazing actor so I have a feeling this might actually be a great movie.  I imagine the setting being Bronze-Dark Age with a twist of sci-fi (assuming most of the screen time will be in the hologram) it won't be that difficult for a wider audience to enjoy imo.

Thanks for mentioning this.  I completely forgot about this movie.

As long as he doesn't have to unload a whole clip to drop a dude then I'll watch it ;)  Would be funny if they make it into a parody along the lines of Naked Gun or Hot Shots.  In all seriousness though, if they do the Tom Clancy name justice with a great thriller equal to the likes of Patriot Games or Clear and Present Danger then it should do fine.

I imagine the setting that the Division is in will make for a great movie adaptation.  The storyline in the actual game isn't all that towering.  So, I visualize this being one of the first game to movie that will be respected by most.  Assuming of course the script delivers.  Oh, and of course only if they get Uwe Boll to direct :+1:

Always said it would make a better movie than a game. The story is grade a disaster movie stuff. If i was them i would fo a sort of prequel thing (or set it in a different city) where we get to follow the breakdown and the activation of the division agents(at the halfway to last thrid of the movie).

It can also be fairly low budget. (for a big ticket movie) seeing as it is set in our "current" time and the only real sci-fi parts are the AR stuff.

This have been a good conversation

I liked the game very much as a cooperative loot-driven shooter, until content ran out after around 80 hours.

There's no way the movie will be better than that, but it's a setting full of potential.

However, in my mind's eye - I imagine it can't be much more than a competent thriller, even under ideal conditions.

Well the movie will not be based on the game... but the lore... the setting...

The game is the game and you have that story. No point in repeating that. But even in the game there is a massive amount of stuff that have gone down before the game even starts. You get that story through the cutscene, echoes and other bits n bobs.

My bet if i was project lead on the movie would be to set it in a different city and have the things that happenedin the game as background noise that get mentioned every now and then.

Most movies based on established works tend to repeat the stories already told, although with a cinematic take on it.

I'm pretty sure the Division movie will be more or less the same story as we've seen in the game. Maybe expanded in some areas and reduced in others.

Wouldn't bother me one bit, as I think the setting is interesting - and the story could be served well by a cinematic treatment.

They will release a fantastic trailer, but the actual movie will have the CGI downgraded.  :p

    No. Just not.
We haven't had our fill of society falls movies yet eh?
Just gotta keep rolling end of the world disaster movies because they are cheap as fuck to make.
That's why they are so common.

The division had a neat BACKground though convoluted as fuck from a virology standpoint...like how small pox survived the cold for long and long enough to be vir--well you get the point. They added alot of magic to the story.

I liked it alot. Hell I like the PC game alot. I just can't stand it anymore because they have a black desert online class hack problem. People.

People ruined the game for me.

My understanding is that after 2008 people that review plays have been so inundated with post-apocalyptic stories that they couldn't stand them anymore.  Being cheep has nothing to do with why these stories are so popular.
