When I played LoL I knew the community was pretty toxic so I was prepared for it. But it wore me down nevertheless within a month and I quit the game. Even when I never responded even once it still wore me down.
The toxic atmosphere is what this type behaviour costs and people who continue to play become desensitised and no longer find it unusual or objectionable and even acceptable as time passes. This is what gradually increasing the heat in pot with frog in it does and even if you do not participate in the worse type of abuses the fact that people continue to accept this and still play shows that to them playing was more important .
That is truly sad that people no longer object by leaving the game but accept it and continue to support the game.
If asked they will say "what to do if you want to play you have to tolerate this" and that ladies and gentlemen is how game companies do not take any real steps to curb this behaviour. Why would they because even if they do nothing you still play.
Does not really shock me, same as any employer is checking your social media accounts when you apply for a job, I do the same and in Riot case I would also look into employers chat logs and if you straight up found someone was using their rioter status to threaten other players you know something is wrong with how they are functioning.
my wife plays LOL nightly and i see how much she gets into it with other players just for making one mistake or "kill stealing" as the morons who play that game call it. She gets baited regularly into arguments with some of the worst scum of the earth ive ever seen online. But with that being said I watch some of the games and some champions are beyond OP compared to others and the games balance is a complete joke. That game is about as toxic as Ive ever seen a game from the design all the way down to the consumer. Ive never seen a game like LOL that actually breeds anger into its own game mechanics.
The balance seems off because of how the game works. If you get an advantage then you will seem overpowered. But you have to outplay the other team in order to get that advantage. They did this so the games wouldn't last forever. The winning team can win faster instead of dragging the game out for an hour because it takes that long to get ahead. LOL is not perfect by any means and with the 60 million players they deal with every month in a highly competitive environment it magnifies everything. I believe they are too easy on trolls example is their own employees are actually trolling games. Trolls for online gaming companies should be taking out the trash not providing player experience.
I play LoL and I honestly do not have to deal with many toxic players. Every few games or so there is a player that lashes out but for the most part I play with and against some pretty cool people.
That is because Riot is now doing what it needs to be done to fight nasty players. back when i 1st tried it, it was not the case. It was about a year after i tried the game that they started their big fight against toxic players, And as you say now, it seem it is working. Problem is always with players and how publisher handle toxic players, as soon as publishers start taking action we see a large dip in this kind of behavior. Of course that doesn't mean they stop being dick heads but still actions taken protects many players from suffering.
