Oblivion Class help

flguy147flguy147 Member UncommonPosts: 507
Hey, i am going to play Oblivion soon for the first time ever.  I have only played Skyrim in the series and ESO but i dont consider ESO really part of it lol.  But i am thinking of playing some type of "Dark Magic Knight", almost something maybe like a Dark Templar from AOC.  Bascially a melee dark magic user so i was wondering which class would be good for that?  Also if you have any recommendations then i am 100% open to anything but please include my original question as well.  Thanks guys for the help

Make your own IMO... Pick up some magic skills along with what types armor/weapons skills you'd feel fit such a build. The "classes" in Oblivion and Morrowind are just templates. Nothing like what you see in ESO.

Nope not in the slightest, I've found most of them to be rather weak/limited.. At least compared to builds I've created myself. They're just barebones templates. Character creation itself is not so important in those games on that front, outside of picking minor and major skills. ( minor can only be raised so much)...

It's good to remember in Oblivion you either have a weapon or magic. You can't pick your off hand. If you want to be a mage-melee type, I recommend Conjurer since you would constantly be summoning your weapon.
I recommend your class to be Thief. When picking a class, choose the one you are least likely to make use of. Due to Oblivion's leveling system, it's better to level slower. You level based on your classes major skills.

Like others said, classes don't really matter, its same sort of leveling as Skyrim - use a skill, that skill levels up. If it's a major skill then it contributes to overall leveling.

Something you might want to be aware of is the scaling technology. Everything in the game scales to your level with the creatures you are fighting changing roughly every 5 levels. This means if you put your major skills as stuff you never use then you can complete the game before you hit lvl5 and basically only ever fighting scamps and other crap monsters. You don't start getting daedric armour until lvl25ish.

So, my favourite playthrough was when I played the system. I chose conjuring, daggers and light armour as my major skills then very early on just started summoning creatures, letting them bash on me and then bashing on them with low damage daggers. This meant I could rapidly level up just stood in a town. took maybe an hour or two of this to reach lvl20ish, after which I then start playing normally. From then on, I was fighting more interesting creatures, getting more interesting loot and the game was harder / more fun.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr80 Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr5X Shaman

Melee with a shield and magic you can choose at will makes you OP later on in the game, Archers might be faster for gameplay ,while assasins from my point of view were the most difficult, but maybe ,most enjoyable way as well to play the game.

While you don't have your offhand, it's easy to switch between magic use and weapon use as you push c to start casting your equipped spells. Press C again to go back to your weapon.

For me, I don't play Oblivion as much, but I tend to just let my character evolve and I end up with a build based on how I played to that point. Skills are leveled based on how you use them. I don't think it really matters at all what you chose in the beginning of the game.

I always liked my pets in the elder scroll games. I would usually play a  sneaky Nightblade type with marksman and conjuration always in the mix. If you like pets, level up conjuration and get the Clanfear summons. I consider him the best and he really wrecks most of the opponents you will face in Oblivion. As for other skills use what you want. As others have said make your own class, the templates always have some skill in them that can be replaced with a better one.
