World of Warcraft players are expressing displeasure at a new version of the Legion alpha that has removed the ability to move the camera back from a player's location by using a known console command "/console CameraDistanceMaxFactor 4".

Their decision is soundly based. Parity is a good thing, actually I would like to pvp on a no addons server, pve as well.

There decision is not soundly based, the better move would have been to just make the in game slider encompass the max camera distance. Not nerf those that used the max camera distance. As has been said, this really hampers raid leaders, tanks and melee especially when their boss npcs are so darn big. Enjoy looking at feet and crotches, is esssentially what blizzard is telling its players.

I hate only one thing about WOW
    apperently more than one hmm
    1. WOW PVP mods
    2. WOW Macros
    3. Legal un fair PVP manipulations like cam range

According to that blue text it got removed because it would provide an unfair advantage over players who do not know the command.
By that logic they would also have to remove all addons that add QoL and functionality of the UI.

So why don't they just expand the range of the menu's cam distance slider instead of removing the option?

The rest was basicly just more of their typical display of "we know you will not like it, but we are going to do it anyway" arrogance.

    TLDR:
Blizzard is just being Blizzard. Nothing to see here.

I wish... enemy cooldown/dr trackers are bad enough, but then you have crap like gladiatorlossa which is just completely ridiculous. Obviously these mods aren't carrying mediocre players to gladiator titles, but they do offer a significant advantage.

WoW....... 10 years later, but finally they make this change, what next ? Arenas without addons ? hahahahaha.........

"the default distance behind a character is sufficient to play the game effectively."

That sentence, imho, demonstrates that Blizzard are no longer building WoW out as a labour of love. When you do things because they are "sufficient", you aren't doing it properly.

game is ruined by addons. they make game too easy.

Never knew the command existed. Then again I don't PVP and do very minimal raiding when I played it. I don't see a problem with the change. People can/will always find something they don't like in a game. You either learn to adapt to the change or not.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I agree the distance is adequate however if Blizzard goes out of their way to make change, you know there was a reason and that is likely a few like not wanting to hear complaints about sudden lag ,easier to design maps with less in view, less bandwidth etc etc.

I agree with last poster,add-ons are a blemish on ALL of gaming and sometimes borderline cheat.

I have seen the limiting of view distance quite often,i found FFXI was far too short and EQ2 i used to load some command lines to get it to move out further.

The main problem i found was in Raid type content, you have a large spread out player base, you need a wide camera angle to see all the players, otherwise you should not be making Raid content.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Wow, I got Hero of the Horde which is the highest possible rated battleground title and I never used anything like that.  Maybe some of my team did, I don't know...  it obviously must not matter THAT much.

How are gladiuslossa and setconsole maxcameradistance unfair?

If u sucked at pvp, chances are, you should do more arenas than hating an addon.

Link me your toon so i can take a look at ur ratings or a vod showing how skillful you are in pvp.

Wasn't even aware of this but it does give PvPers an advantage I would think.

As a healer it was really nice to have room awareness to watch people taking damage from area effects instead of just staring at raid frames to spot people that take damage.

For all the talk about how people should look at what happens on the screen instead of staring at their UI this approach goes for the exact opposite.

After 10 years (or whatever) of testing we feel this change is needed ... sure thing.

As Wizardry says it is much more likely to be something associated with e.g. lag as a result of the changes they have made.

And one of the things which has struck me about the recent interviews are all the "this is what is going to be in the game when we finish it". As was evident with WoD the "it will launch when its ready philosophy" no longer exists. Now it is "launching to a date that best suits our financial reporting and if it has bugs and some features are not finished tough".

You make a great point!  I am not a fan of needed a cluttered screen with UI to heal etc.  It would be nice if the game allowed more immersive ways to play.  taking one tool away doesn't make sense if  that is what they want.  It goes back to what @dotdotdash  said.  It is no longer about a labour of love.

Just curious, but is this related to http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/15/view/news/page/1/read/40033/World-of-Warcraft-Beta-Updates-Draw-Distances-And-Talent-Overhaul.html

Just giving it a quick read, it seems like this would be the culmination of Blizzard's 'graphical improvements':

"The post is filled with several visuals to show off graphical improvements. The new draw distance system would be applied throughout the entire game, not just in the Legion locations."

It does matter. Try coordinating a raid as tank or melee dps glued to the bosses. I used the command when raiding with my rogue or enhancement shaman. It makes life a lot easier by giving you better awareness about what is going on around you.

Some times WoW devs give me the impression that they change established things just for the sake of "change".

I can understand the raiders' point of view, but then again, a further camera distance cheapens the experience and makes raiding easier than intended. MMOs, in general, need better camera controls, since they are primarily in a 3rd person viewpoint, so with this perspective (no pun intended), i can understand the players' point of view also.

most valuable comment I think. if you dont allow camera draw distance, people still have something else to do the same job (raid member list addon).. I would much rather look around in the world instead of stare to some raid frames..

so yes, it must be Blizzard finding an excuse for failing on the draw distance mechanic for Legion

In the end I think those who never used it won't be bothered.
Those that used it will be upset.
Some of those upset will simply call it a day.

This is an old feature. The type of thing that people get used to. Yanking it out will, for some, be the proverbial straw that breaks the camels back.

I liked this comment on the (European) forums:

We strongly believe that there needs to be parity in this area between players who are using the default UI and those who have addons or knowledge of hidden console variables.

-If they believe that parity should be enforced with people who are using the default UI, they would disable all addons.
-They are not disabling all addons.
-Therefore they don't believe that parity should be enforced.

Okay... going to be the weird one out but... I like the change being done the way they are. Personally some things like view distance I understand (being a raider myself) why it is liked, but it does force me to do something I'd rather not since it is a big benefit.

That said, it also means blizzard needs to design the stuff WITH the default max distance in a way that you aren't looking at a crotch all day and it does give adequate view distance at least to the extent being able to handle mechanics.

I always wondered why there wasn't a way to not have to stare at a large mobs freaking ankles.
    A command I didn't know about.
And now you are removing it.
    That freaking SUCKS!
Of course, since the combat damage and other floating text seems to go off over the head of the foes, I never seem to see that at all when we're fighting the big boys, BECAUSE NOBODY CAN SEE PAST THEIR KNEES!
Oh yeah, you're hitting a sore point with me here Blizz.

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...
