Its not all about Gameplay

I believe Gameplay is not king. Definitely a major factor in a games overall play-ability but not the end all be all.
World and immersion go hand in hand. Theres a reason why WoW still captures me but on paper i should be playing Wildstar or Tera, those games have a much longer check list for me than WoW does. Same thing goes for Overwatch and Rainbow Six siege for me. Siege is much more capturing for me than Overwatch.

World, gameplay and Lore are very important and i believe you need them all.
If you have World and Gameplay, you have my time and attention, add in good lore and you have my addiction. Hence why WoW is so effective for me. Thats why games like Metal gear solid are so luring to me. Its got good Gameplay, a world of layers over layers, and a story to ponder over.

Possibly why Darkfall (OG) was so hooking for me, Darkfall had this world that made you feel "in it" and the community around you felt effected by you and your doings. The first siege of Tiq was the most fun i have ever had in any game hands down til this day, sorry to say not even SWG matched that day in excitement, remembrance and emotion. EvE likes to believe the whole "its like i was there" trailer, but sorry, EVE has nothing on that, EVE is an RTS at heart. DFO made me feel like i was there, like situation was bigger than what i was just seeing.

I dont think games should just weigh on one pillar. I think they need all 3 pillars. Lore. World. Gameplay.
If one suffers it cant rise. (You cant have a game like Tera with hands down amazing combat but in a medieval fantasy world have lolis running around with people driving cars, nobodies guna believe that shit)

There most certainly is a much larger check list than just game play or just graphics,it is called .....................making a ?....GAME !!

That is why i get so bummed out with mmorpg's,i am not a big fan of just boring spam type gaming or meaningless kill gaming,i want the actual RP in a rpg and most every game is NOT doing it.
Your Wow mention was an odd one because i have dubbed Wow the ANTI mmorpg, all soloing then al la sudden the game wants people to raid when all they have done is soloing. Then that soloing is LINEAR questing and every player is doing the exact same quest/routes.
A ROLE playing game is SUPPOSE to be YOUR game, not some pre fabricated content where you basically just do it and have no real decisions to make in where or why you go somewhere in the world.

Also the reason to have a login screen is to involve others as in you also need others to play out a ROLE playing game/actions,yet games like Wow detract from everything that a mmorpg should be,including instances.

point being that not one single developer has yet to design a proper mmorpg, games like FFXI and EQ1 came MUCH closer and games like Wow clones are MUCH further away. Now of course i touched on mmorpg's,it still carries the same agenda in single player games, you nee a complete world and tools to properly design a real game world with it's reasons and Lore and mechanics and characters etc etc.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Gameplay IS king, but its not the final word in enjoyment, nor is it the only pillar.

The reason gameplay is king is because it is the gateway to everything else. Story and lore takes time to get into, time to build up, absorb and understand but gameplay is instant, gameplay is the minute-to-minute fun.

If your gameplay is bad, the majority of players won't even make it to the fun bits of lore and story.

Also, story and lore are finite, whereas gameplay can be endless.

However, once your gameplay is good then sure, having an immerse world, good story, good lore etc all adds to it and make a complete game.

Finally, I'd also say look at your target audience. Games are pretty horrible mediums for telling stories and the average gamer really couldn't give a shit about stories and lore. Both stories and lore are passive - the user has to take time away from gameplay to absorb knowledge. Thats not why most people play games - they want the gameplay!
