On another note China has 1.357 Billion people as of 2010, NA and Europe combined have just over 1 billion as of 2015. Not hard to see why it would bring in that much.

So many loud opinions from those who even state they have not seen the move yet. Develop your own opinion and stop being sheep.

I found the movie highly enjoyable and would definitely recommend a viewing. I went with some Warcraft fans and some who knew nothing of it. All enjoyed it and we rated it either 7 or 8/10.

It was visually stunning and it was an action packed & fun fantasy adventure. Unfortunately it is a franchise that some feel very strongly against, most of which I feel stems from its popularity and influence.

I do hope for a directors cut though as I do believe that the cut running time was a problem.

No film is a perfect film, and I don't suggest it is an amazing movie. However, after a second viewing I found it to be a very good one.

But did you go and see Conjuring 2. Now You See Me 2. Ninja Turtles, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Angry Birds, X-Men ...

    You didn't ......

Does that mean you have "loud opinions" and "feel strongly against those franchises"?

Most people - imo - have no such views. People go to the cinema and pick a film to see from those on offer. The rest of the releases they might catch up with later on Amazon, Netflix, etc. etc. And there were many action packed, highly enjoyable, fun films to choose from when Warcraft released.

In China cinema goers currently have less options amongst foreign films; they don't have the same options to "catch up" later either. And Warcraft didn't come up against a Chinese blockbuster like The Mermaid say which took $700M+ earlier in the year.

it's funny that a movie that is this critically panned can make $412 million. I mean, I've seen 50 - 60 type ratings on rotten tomatoes do really well, but this thing is sitting in the 20s.
Nah, there are movies that have horrendous reviews that have grossed large amounts.

Da Vinci Code is one. Transformers Revenge of the fallen is another.
"Home alone" beats them all by a lot. One of the top earners of all time and one of the few I agree with the critics about.

But in this case the movie is made so that only Wow fans can enjoy it, which limit the western popularity somewhat. It seems though that people in China either know the Wow lore or have easier to get into things like this then their western counterparts.

And there is of course nothing wrong with focusing a Wow movie on the Wow fans but if they had done a better job easing the story in for the none fans the score would be higher. Well, recasting some of the humans to less cheesy actors wouldn't hurt either.

One of best movies ever, rarely have enjoyed so much. Not sure if put it on top of the list, but for sure on my top 10 or even top 5 list. In this weeks have been in cinema several times, again today and enjoyed nearly as first time. Just hope we won't wait this time 10 years for next movie. :-)

gervaise1, are you stalking me? Do you know what movies I went to see (other than Warcraft: The Beginning)? Did I mention anything regarding any of those other movies in my post?

Your whole argument is based upon a misunderstanding of what you think I did or how you think I feel about things I have not mentioned. I based mine off the people on forums, such as these, that say such things as "I heard the movie is rubbish, and it must be because such and such 'critic' said so." Similarly from people who have stated that "the movie must be bad because it didn't do so well in the US". It did very well in Europe and Asia. China is overtaking the US as the biggest market in the world so it is definitely relevant to highlight that fact.

My post was intended to suggest that you make up your own mind and don't be put off by others. I can only apologise if I somehow offended you by not mentioning other movies recently released. I don't believe it necessary to mention others when the subject is that of the Warcraft movie.

It is trendy to hate on some things. Some people care about being trendy.

Anyway. Enjoy life and don't get hung up on other people's opinions, that includes mine.

I liked the Movie for what it was .... A fun time for me and my kids

Why do people keep saying it's a WoW movie?
It is based from Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans series of games

Which I really enjoyed also  :)

I play, but didn't see it - refuse to see it, in fact. Everything I've read is that the movie is just God-awful; spectacular graphics, horrendous plot and acting. I seem to recall a Final Fantasy film that suffered the same problems, and, like a fool, I spent my hard-won high school job dollars on that boondoggle out of a misplaced 'brand loyalty.'

Hollywood judges movies based on their domestic performance. It doesn't matter to industry bigwigs if a film manages to 'break even' or even turn a little profit overseas - a failure in the states is a failure. Moreover, when movies franchises do badly their first go-around but spawn sequels, the sequel almost always does worse than the original film - it's just human nature for people to avoid objects with a stigma.

So, that is the end of Warcraft movies, regardless if some talking head comes out in the next few weeks and says "oh yeah yeah yeah - we're gonna make another!!!" And, that's fine. Warcraft lore is like a barren, medieval farm without crop rotation - it's been denuded of all nutrients. Unless Blizzard releases another RTS to repopulate the story, we'll continue to see rehash expansions like WoD and Legion (as well as films, in theory but not practice) like this.

your opinion is meaningless, watch the movie first, then you can say something.
    movie is surprisingly good!

The movie was bad, that's pretty clear, even for WoW fans.

As for how succesful it was? It really wasn't. With 240mil+ cost (production - marketing), they didn't even break even. Probably needs over 500mil+ to start making any profit.

For a sequel? 600-700mil. Blizzard overestimated their fanbase, it's very small in a grand scheme of things. It's not even the most succesful video game adaptation considering how much it cost to make.

If they ever do make Warcraft 2, I can see it being exclusive for China. It really bombed hard in EU and NA. Makes me wonder how many MMOs are more popular than WoW these days in the West.
according to you.. i thoroughly enjoyed the movie... it captured the essence of warcraft perfectly. the visuals were stunning and the 3D was top notch.

at least 45ish people i know who also saw it.. most of which from my raiding guild, with their partners etc... also loved it... i have no idea where you get your facts

Lol it s made money and a lot, and will continue to.

It's still -100mil. They are yet to make a profit out of it, and considering it's pretty late, it won't make much more anymore. It pretty much already stopped making any money.

Also I know many Warcraft fans, and they found the movie average at best. More in the 4-5/10. Just as the game has been garbage for the last 7 years, the movie was no better.

Hobbit was by no means perfect, far from that, but if Hobbit is 7-8/10, you can be sure Warcraft can't be considered average.

The Warcraft movie isn't deserving of the negative reviews it gets, at least among warcraft RTSers.

As for why it was popular in China.   Imagine that was only one console in your country(or PC in this case) during the mascot era of games(Spyro, Crash, Sonic, Mario, ect).   Now imagine that the biggest franchise of the only console allowed in your country got a movie.    That's pretty much what happened in China with Warcraft.

It's already playing in the cheap theater here. Took Jungle Book 2 1/2 months to hit the cheap theater, took WarCraft 2 1/2 weeks.
