Someone explain this to me in simple terms.

My understanding is the card has a 150w TDP (which is not necessarily the same as its power draw).

The PCIE slot has a max power draw of 75w.  A single 6pin power connector also has a max power draw of 75w.  So, *in theory* between the two of them it should be fine?  At the limit, but relatively speaking fine.

Now, we all know that the GPU isn't at 100% all the time unless you're doing something like bitcoin mining, so there should be plenty of overhead in normal usage situations.

However, from what I'm reading the issue isn't necessarily the overall power draw total, but that somehow they screwed the pooch on the drivers and they didn't limit the power draw from the PCIE slot to cap out at 75w and in turn it's occasionally trying to pull the entire 150w through the PCIE rather than part from the PCIE and part from the 6 pin?

If I have anything wrong here, please educate me, I'm just now discovering this issue and trying to get up to speed.

    It has been fixed already.

They didnt "screw the pooch" in worst case scenarios it drew ~160W and went a bit over the spec.

To give you an idea how much power it used in normal scenarios (was befor the fix):
