Am I missing something about character creation!?

So after seeing rave recommendations for this game, I decided I'd give the free trial a spin to see if it was worth the monthly sub fee, and I'm... A bit confused.

I'm trying to make an Elezen male, but for some reason the character creation options appear to be... well, for want of a better term: crap.

The height slider seems to barely affect anything, the head seems tiny for some reason, there are only four "faces" consisting of "gaunt dude", "gaunt-er dude", "tiny baby" and "old man", with the youngest of the four looking incredibly out of place on the huge, muscular body.

Not to mention I don't seem to have any real control over any of the features. I can pick like... 4 options of each section and that seems to be it? No adjustment sliders? No tweaking options?

I mean, all the other races seem to at least have options out the wazoo. I was able to make a decent looking human character, but apparently doing that is impossible with the Elezens.

To add to my confusion, in the INTRODUCTORY CUTSCENE no less, there are two perfectly attractive looking Elezen characters just sort of sitting there, while my weird looking, long-necked, baby-faced, disproportioned monstrosity was only a foot or so across from them. What gives?

Am I just missing something here? Is there some submenu button I'm just not seeing? Or is the character customisation for the only race I really care to play really just that limited?

Gotta say, first impressions aren't doing it for me so far.

Alphinaud and his twin sister Alisaie are only 16 (the two Elezen in the intro scene you mentioned)- your character is how adult Elezen appear.  I could never really make a male or female Elezen because of the tiny head/big body syndrome, not my cup of tea ;)

I haven't played far enough into the story to know who anybody really is yet, I just know that pretty much every single Elezen male I've seen in the game's cutscenes seems to look a whole lot more normal than anything the creator lets me make.

Is this, like.. A known issue? Or something? I can't even log into the main forums to ask about it because apparently I haven't "logged into the game" yet, or something.

But is that seriously what the story is? Elezens look normal until they hit age 20 and then they become weirdly disproportionate?

Elezen look good in armor, bad in robes.  Just kinda how it is.

Sounds like you already made up your mind about the game. Nothing I, or anyone else, can say is going to change that. Elezen look weird to most people but you seem to be taking it a bit harder than most. This probably just isn't the game for you.

Naw he can love the game still, just maybe he won't enjoy being that race or maybe he'll like bein an elf at higher level when they look cool in armor. I love FF14 but I don't like being an Elezen myself, I prefer lala or Miq.

I kind of always felt elezens were weird in general, some females can turn out alright but the males always seems 'metro'? (no offense to anyone). Maybe try hyur or miqo'te since those seem to be pretty popular.

Always pick Humans in FFXIV:ARR tbh, they do look better imo, but its all about personal preference. The character creator isn't on the same scale as BDO perhaps, but its much better than early MMO's such as WoW when it comes to amount of choice in character creation.

This photo was going around the forums, to describe Elezen, when I started playing at release. Thought it was funny, and accurate. I still rolled an Elezen male. /shrug

If you think that level of non-character customization is bad, wait until you see the rest of the game

The baby faces are ridiculous with all races that have them. Except maybe humans. My Elezen was boy-band gorgeous so I dont know ;)

The face of my female Elezen, Human and Roegadyn look a lot more mature than their male counterparts. Specially my Roegadyn which i made resembling Admiral Merlwyb "Squenix smashed their head on a keyboard" Bloefhiswyn.

While I always recommend this game to anyone who talks about being interested in MMOs, and think it is by far the highest quality MMO I've played, this is the one aspect where I feel that the game falls flat on its face. The character creator is bland, to say the least; it feels like an outdated relic of the original FFXIV that released years ago.

Hopefully this won't deter you from trying the rest of the game, as it is truly well worth the time to enjoy. But understand that at least a few of us understand where you are coming from and agree entirely.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
