I originally tried SWG when it first came out, but I could only play it for 2 months then quit due to college class demands. I forgot about SWG somehow and ended up playing 7 other MMORPG's after I graduated school. I ran around the MMORPG world looking for the "perfect MMORPG" that fills every gaming aspect and ingredient I desired, hoping to find a game that I could immerse myself in and really not get bored. In the past 2 years, I've played 7 MMORPG's in this time period thinking that I'd find the ultimate game to end my search and came up with a conclusion that I'd better just find a game that had rich and deep gaming content that suited my gaming style, preferred genre, and interest and live with the consequences thereafter. I ran into many games that offered rich and beautiful eye-candy, but lacked gaming design depth. Then came the issues from customer service, game client stability, bug-fixes, patch frequency, etc. I came to the quick conclusion that there is no perfect MMORPG out there at all. It doesn't matter how much we rant and rave, the gaming developers are the ones in control. It's not us that make the game move, it's their paychecks and company direction and drive that does the trick. I came back to SWG even though I knew about the combat upgrade debacle, gaming nerfs, bugs, etc. and read many forum boards pros and cons just because I knew SWG had gaming content which would keep my interest. The graphics may NOT be a cutting edge 3-D technology graphics engine, but I'm here cause I enjoy exploration in space and on planets besides the vast number of things there is to do and see in the game. While I do have some issues with SOE, I know that after I shut off my computer and return to the real world that it's just a game. That's why I came back to SWG. I'd like to hear reason's why other ppl came back.
As one of the first MBH's on my old server, I missed griefing jedi. Now that I see that the already 'rich target environment' is getting richer by the day, I couldn't help myself.
Once the new machine gets in I'm actually thinking of creating a new character though. I want a chicken walker this time!
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
I've been circling back as well, during one of my customary extended breaks from EVE Online, to check out where my various prior MMOs are at just now, and I've been pleasantly surprised by how well SWG stacks up against some of the other offerings out there. Every game has issues, and SWG is no exception, but at a time when games seem to be getting more (rather than less) linear, SWG is a refreshing break from that linearity in terms of the breadth of what you can do, the freedom of where you can go, the ability to constantly reinvent your character and the like. The graphics are starting to seem a little dated (I remember how impressed I was with them when SWG was first released 2 years ago, and I suppose that's a sobering reminder of how quickly our graphics expectations are being ratcheted up in the current environment), but the freedom and free-flow of the game is, again, refreshing when seen against the background of more recent MMO offerings that offer much less in the way of this kind of sandbox-type freedom. I think the game holds up surprisingly well when compared with more recent offerings, to be honest.

Well I have less of a system then you and I have everything for visual settings and terrain settings maxed out. Feel free to look at my SWG gallery in my signature if you want too see the graphics I am getting. Oh, and don't forget, to get AA with SWG you have to force it with your forceware drivers.

Read the thread, it states specifically what the specs are on both systems used to take those screenshots.
I still challenge ANYONE to tell me, correctly, which system took which shots.

I came back to check on the progress of the CU. I found it to be better for action in combat than the queue system had allowed. I've actually been so engrossed in combat that I've reached a euphoric state.....I used to only do that in space, hehe.
I've been having a good time in SWG since I came back. There is SO MUCH to do in the game, it's hard to decide at times since I don't have lots of time during the week. I do like the fact that my main profession as an artisan is up and running 100% of the time and is very profitable which allows me to concentrate on other professions like mastering space combat and asteriod mining.
The game really feels different since long ago, and I think it's better now IMO. The Themeparks are very fun which I've just started. So many to do and see, hehe.
I too fumbled around with a ton of games over the last 6+ years. Originally I was strictly a FPS player as I found the twitch competition great. Unfortunately, the old games that I enjoyed were slowly becoming hacked, etc and decided to give EQ a try when Kunark came out. Needless to say I got engrossed in the genre. Unfortunately, that faded and I started looking elsewhere. Honestly I cannot list the games that I have played because the list is too long even if I stipulate that I had to play the game for more than 1 month. In the end, I like EQ2 and SWG the best for pay to play games, America's Army and Knight Online for free. I cancelled EQ2 a while back when I came to realize that I would be duplicating my experience with EQ1, but if I were to look at pay to play fantasy it would be back to EQ2. SWG just has so many aspects that are explorable, and I like most of what I can accomplish as a toon within the game.
In all honesty though, if I want to have fun and only have an hour or so to play, it's logon to AA, kill a few ppl and back to my daily grind of work, family, etc.
SWG just has so many aspects that are explorable, and I like most of what I can accomplish as a toon within the game.
Ditto, man. I found this to be true as well. Other games make you locked into a profession that u have to create a new toon. I do see lots more ppl coming to the game now and also have spoken to quite a bit of SWG Veterans who have come back. I think the ROTW and JTLS expansions really made the game better for the long haul. I may not agree with everything that Sony Devs do, but the game fun factor is definately there for certain.
I played swg before the changes. and left to try a few other games. And what exactly has changed. and is it level based now? meaning i log in im level 1? and i pick professions? and over time can be level 50 rifleman?
Or what?
Id like to know because im thinking of trying swg again.
Its still skill based. However, for COMBAT they introduced a combat level system and a level 80 fighter (= maximum) is MUCH MUCH better than a combat level 1 fighter. You can become level 80 through a combination of fighting skills from any of the professions, but it usually means you have to master 2 elite combat professions. Mastering one will give you combat level 54 or so.
Weapons now have prerequisites to use ... a certain minimum combat level usually. Highest certification is 54. SOME signature weapons are race specific (Wookiee bowcaster e.g.) or profession specific (e.g. commando flamethrower) and you need to have the right race, profession and combat level to use it. HOWEVER you can use ALL weapons if you qualify .. this means a rifleman CAN use high level pistols too (he just wont be very accurate with it). You ALSO can use ALL your specials with EVERY weapon. So a smuggler can now last ditch attack with a carbine too and not only a pistol like before.
So yes, you can be level 50 .. but NO, it wont be "rifleman 50" but "combat level 50" with preferred weapon type rifles. Which means you are almost master rifleman.
Its now harder and more dangerous to fight enemies, especially the aggressive swarming types. The color codes now MEAN what they say ... if its red, you are dead. There is a damage modifier that increases or decreases damage based on the difference between your combat level and that of the mob. So a level 80 mob will one hit kill a level 1 artisan without a second glance.
You start with HAM 1000. It goes up to HAM 3000 while going from CL 1 to CL80. So its like being buffed in the old system, but its permanent. Doc buff now is a 10-20 % increase, not 200 % as before.
Weapons now ONLY hit health. Weapon specials now ONLY cost action (you wont kill yourself doing specials like before). Mind now is needed for heals etc. That means old rifleman with mind hits or BH with eye shot is NOT the ruling class anymore.
There is now a STRONG incentive to group (XP bonus) .. you can still solo but it will be slower and harder than before.
Its best you try it .. at first its unfamiliar. Best you join a group and check out what the others are doing.
I came back because my WoW server was offline ALL DAY on tuesday. Took 10 mins to install SWG, then took 25 minutes to download the update. Ended up playing all day, I love the new Combat Upgrade and the fact I can run around wearing my Stormtrooper Armor and kill Rebel NPCs and never be bothered by Rebel players! lol!! After school I'm going to go buy the SWG complete package for 29.99$CAD.
I played EQ for about a year right after it came out (yes many, many years ago). After EQ I didn't play another MMO until a friend talked me into playing SWG when it came out. He actually preordered the game for me so that it showed up on my doorstep on launch day.
In short I absolutely loved the game. I started out as an Architect, which for those of you who remember was _extremely_ different at launch than it is now (no harvesters, no mounts, no vehicles). I remember standing out in the desert on Tat and hearing the wind blowing around me in a sandstorm and thinking, "This is the best game ever."
Well, the game changed a whole lot over the next year and a half. I stopped playing in January, 2005 since the game was getting a bit stale. The divide between the players with hundred's of millions of credits (or more) and those of us with just a few million was really ruining the game. Plus SOE backed off of the hard-line stance on playing a Jedi WAY too easily. I thought perma-death was completely appropriate - along with all of the other hardships of playing a Jedi character. But when SOE made becoming a Jedi simple and playing a Jedi easy, _everyone_ had a Jedi character. This was really the last straw for me. I held out for the JTL expansion and while I enjoyed that it was far from enough to keep me playing.
Six months have now gone by and I've been very happily playing World of Warcraft which is a truely excellent game. Wanting a bit more diversity I figured I'd give EQII a try. When activating EQII with my old station account however, I noticed that for just an additional $6.99/month I could play EQ, EQII and SWG all on one account (and now Matrix Online too). I thought, "It would be nice to play SWG again *sigh*." So I signed up and am now waiting for the first payment to bill after my EQII 30-day trial so that I can login again to SWG. I wonder if my characters will still be available...
I've read a bit about the CU and it looks like it is a very good addition. My last cahracter was a Master Doc/Master Swordsman and I remember taking on just about _anything_ in the game solo with little to no trouble. Kinda took a lot of the fun out of adventuring. Plus the amount of credits you could make doing 'solo-group' missions was absurd - I could easily make 3mil a night just running these missions.
So why come back to SWG? First off, I really did love the game. I'd really, really like to see SOE setup new galaxies that would allow us to start from scratch - there was nothing like those first few months of playing (bugs and all). Second, the crafting system is second to none. I love the fact that my Doctor character went from Novice Medic to Master Doctor without every firing a shot or swinging a weapon. You just can't do that in any other MMO. Third, I like the JTL expansion and want to see more done with this. And fourth, I'm interested in trying out the CU.
Doctor is very different since the Combat Upgrade. Actually, alot is very different. I would venture to guess that it will seem like an entirely new game to you. Try it out, for the money it will cost you to play, you won't be out much if you don't like it, and if you do? It will be a bonus!
Very kewl. A friend of mine plays as a hybrid character and has doctor skils which really come in handy with any group of peeps out in the great wilderness. I'd like to see more ppl like him in the game.
You think the galazy will ever get expanded or become a universe down the road??

I periodically try other MMO's (usually only if they have a free trial or open beta) but none of them is as good as SWG has been.
And, personally, I like the CU for the most part.
