It's amazing how many people are playing this game. I work at a university, we've got lures and people walking around the halls all day and 6 pokestops around the building. I used my lunch to walk around filling up on pokeballs and eggs and my boss shows up and is talking about a bulbasaur he caught. Shits hilarious. And it's not a great game, but it is fun, made even more fun knowing that so many around you are cheesing out on something silly.
The key for longevity is really going to be what else can they add? Can they keep making the game bigger and better? I think so... They got a great hook already and platform run off of. There's endless possibilities. A real turned based Pokemon combat system alone would add a lot. And supposedly that is there plan eventually.
Just be aware of your surroundings. Last night's news people were getting mugged in St. Louis at Pokestops, I assume. Muggers would lie in wait at these stops until someone showed up, guess at least 4 muggings. Sucks this world we now live in can suck the fun out of everything!
what do you expect from St Louis
Dude its real life trolls. OMG we have advanced in gaming.

Still quite some bugs in it. My phone is getting pretty warm when it's running Pokemon Go (Motorola Moto g 4G) and also hangs itself from time to time when I'm walking the dog.
With that, I wish we'd get an official release in The Netherlands as well...
The phone projecting your avatar in the real world... allowing it to fight other people and do quests...
To bad its juvenile pokemon, but the idea behind this game certainly will have some offspring.... just imagine everyone going to the park, because there is a virtuall worldboss sighted there...
Ingress has been around for a while. It's an "augmented reality" game that has people going to real world locations in order to capture portals for their faction https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_(video_game)
Yes i know... and there are some others like that
But where is the graphical splendor, and your avatar? Its more like a RTS game.. but probably also where the idea of Pokemon go comes from...
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Hopefully you get it soon.
There are a lot of bugs.. sometimes my screen goes unresponsive.. I can't move the map, or tap on pokestops or pokemon.
My friend crashes after capturing anything.. and he has a pretty new phone. He's tries turning AR off, it didn't help.

^This. I support the idea of Pokemon Go (PG), but I fear the potential risk. This game gets tons of people out in public who are potential sheep for those who are potential wolves. The addition of Person to Person trade is another vector for risk.
I also fear the potential future upgrade of PvP. My brother's softball team moved from a company legue to a public league and the ethics of the opposing teams disappeared. They found themselves playing with people you would want to met at night in an unlit parking lot. I don't want either trade or PvP to end in physical violence or loss of property.
When I first heard of this tech, the idea of a Rogue like or RPG jumped into my head. But so did the dangers. Criminals are already camping waypoints in PG, I think more thought has to be put into this. A panic button that calls '911' with location and personal ID, may be a Photo or movie of assailant/suspect.

Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven Boy: Why can't I talk to Him? Mom: We don't talk to Priests. As if it could exist, without being payed for. F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing. Even telemarketers wouldn't think that. It costs money to play. Therefore P2W.

The heat, that is normal operation of the GPS. Location tracking is a power intensive operation, it will drain your battery very quickly. Turning off the GPS and turning down the screen brightness are the two things that increase battery life between charges. Oh, and doing updates by wifi only also helps.

I can see it now. One day stores and other places offering the chance to bag one time only rare pets during their opening to draw additional crowds.

Some phones have better battery life than others. Also there's a conserve battery toggle in settings on the app. They also sell cases that have built in batteries that extend phone battery life. Finally as someone else suggested, turning off AR on the upper right hand corner when a Pokemon is spotted also helps the battery.

This is the difference between "something that exists" and a "killer app". Ingress exists. Pokémon Go is a killer app.
It doesn't matter if PKGo is great, substandard, or absolute rubbish. It captures the pokemon fantasy almost perfectly and the results speak for themselves. You may scream if you wish, no one will hear you, they're all playing pokemon.
Went to the store to pick up some ribs for Q tomorrow, saw over 20 people playing at a nearby fountain that had three pokestops close to each other and all three had lures up. So I went over and played. Some teens, some people in their mid 20's and a couple families all having a good time.

An MMORPG of the type I think you are talking about is possible, but the battery drain is significant. such a game will mean a boom for sales of Portable Power Banks for smart phones and tablets. Could the AR world be filled with mobs to fight and loot, resources to harvest, dungeons to explore. Progression, crafting, trading, PvE, and PvP would all be possible.
I feel for those who live in small towns or just can't travel. I suppose nothing prevents Augmented movement via on screen controls rathern than GPS, but then it's just an MMO like all before it. With small towns (Dancer, Texas Pop. 81) there might be a limit to player interaction.
Back to the power problem. 3D graphics is a major power drain on portable batteries and a heating issue. As expressed earlier the GPS is also a power drain and heating issue. I have two 3.000 mAh battery packs that allow me to play Minecraft PE on my tablet most of the day on Saturdays, with the GPS turned off and only under wifi.
Let's imagine that battery life and heat aren't an issue. Let's suppose the local two story mall is an AR dungeon/Boss fight. Is it instanced or open world? Just how is player interaction handled with players on the scene? IRL we are not anonymous, what if players shows up and are rejected from the raid right to their face for unfounded or prejudicial reasons? Will AR games turn into RL public disturbances and land people in jail, hospital, or morgue?

Ingress avatars were just dots as I remember. I got eight of my RL friends to play, the experience lasted two weeks. I told them it would be like playing Planetside 1 in an AR world. Capturing portal being like capturing bases. Connecting a zone would be the same as a territory control in PS1. It just didn't have the feeling of accomplishment for any of us.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I loved today's xkcd on pokemon go. That would be actually be quite the funny prank.

Also the local news reported two auto accidents from kids paying attention to the game instead of the road.
If you are parent, I would be very cautious about this game.
