also in my mind this game is not AR and I dont think calling it AR does justice to AR technology.
I see it as a GPS game, of which a type that has been around for awhile now.
It's AR, but it uses inferior tech such as a phone's camera, instead of your actual eyes looking through a headset with advanced lens.
and that is why if one is a fan of AR I wouldnt want to try and push that as a label.
'oh so AR is basically nothing more than mobile phone game?'
yeah that is the door that is about to be opened with that, but hey have at it! I am a VR guy myself so no sweat of my back
In the same vein that VR is just a cell phone app in a cardboard box.
Confirming that PG is AR is nothing but a way to bolster support for future AR games. Taking away one of the largest parts of the game, which is the AR portion, connecting with the world around you in real time, is only giving the game half credit. Even ingress allowed for this kind of AR.

I agree. Pokemon: Go is a terrible representation of what AR could actually be. It is, what it is, though. Once the hype dies down, hopefully better AR apps will surface. A phone's camera will always be inferior to a headset such as Google Glass or HoloLens. Both AR and VR are here to stay.

ok so how is it not a GPS game but more of an AR game exactly? not that I should care because I shouldnt in fact calling it a AR game is kinda funny for me so I should not resist it but regardless just curious what makes it a AR game and not a GPS game

No, it's not. VR headsets, such as Vive or Rift, have different technical specs than say, Google Cardboard or Samsung VR.
Latency, resolution, and field of view are some key differences between them.
The visual experience you get from the CV1 is way better than even the best phone based VR viewers, as it not only depends on resolution and refresh rate, but also on the optics, the way the screen is controlled and many other factors, which have been fine tuned in the Rift. Even if you use a phone with higher resolution than the Rift, you will most likely see single pixels due to the lens magnification, while you won't in the Rift. Higher resolutions reduce the so called "screen door effect", but they also require a lot of extra GPU power, so they come at a cost.

It gets complicated and technical, but go to this link. It goes more into depth.
"Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements areaugmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data."
"A key measure of AR systems is how realistically they integrate augmentations with the real world. The software must derive real world coordinates, independent from the camera, from camera images."
I would say Pokemon:Go falls into this description.
Also a note on this part - "the real world adventures are worth the data plan overages." - it shouldn't be using up much data. It really only uses your battery, so I would suggest taking that out as well since it can be misunderstood.
Actually you can't unless you're driving under 30mph. Ingress monitors the speed specifically so players can't do fast drive by node grabbing. A well buffed and defended node isn't something you can take driving by anyway. You might be able to do a quick hack at 20 - 30, maybe.
There's also a speed limit on Pokemon Go as well. I believe it's something like 12 MPH and if you go over that it won't track your egg hatching progress, and of course the GPS detects that your no longer in radius of that Pokemon, Pokestop, or Gym. Of course for Pokemon and Pokestops if you click fast enough you may get it, but otherwise you really need to be walking or just find a spot in a park and sit down.

I know the MMO market is devoid of new titles and as such, so is this future of this website but you're really stretching the term MMO here
I don't think it's much of a stretch..
Also look at it this way... you have a much better chance of knowing which players are girls playing Pokemon Go than you do when playing games like WoW
So? What's the point? As a girl, it would be a big turn off for a 21+-year-old guy playing with his Poke balls all day. Maybe if you are a couple middle school kids, I could see. Sorry, but I do find it sad that they are considering this an MMO; it's certainly not my definition either.

It was a joke... because in online MMO's most girls are actually guys... there are no girls on the internet..... so the saying goes.
It's easy to look down on others for finding joy in that which you yourself do not, but there are over 8 Million downloads and more to come and it has only been about a week. I'm sure within those 8 Million there will be several love stories from those over 21 years old.
I see a lot of disdain here from people looking down on those that like playing Pokemon.
You are not better than anyone else because you choose not to play. We are not better than you because we do. These are just simple realities of the situation.
I was walking in the park with my friend during our lunch hour and there were defintly some hotties that were playing pokemon go there. its a good ice breaker and shows similar interest. its a great dating app.
You're right, there is nothing wrong with that, but there is nothing stopping you from getting up, turning off the emulator of Pokemon Red/Green/Gold and walking down a bike path with your doge... Maybe cutting through a forest to find a nice little back river or pond with tadpoles racing through the water, or watching the birds soar. Maybe find the occasional elk or white tailed deer.
Not everyone lives in the wilderness.
On a side note, if you're playing this game, and seeing other people play this game (which many are) you're part of that greater community... you're playing with them.
Consider it easy conversation starters. "Oh you're on your phone, I am also on my phone.. are you also playin Pokemon Go? Oh Cool, lets be best friends forever"
Seems like a good deal to me.
Dude EVERYONE is on the phone.
The reason this is considered a mmo is because the players are people walking around and the game world is the earth. So even though you cannot see them online, you can see them in the world as you explore. Just like every mmo.
I'm surprised at the hype over this game. Hype rating is 10. But gameplay itself is more like a 2. Definitely got the kids attention but so did games like Pogs. Which was just slappin things down and flippin things over. I think the longivity will die very soon just like pogs and those other one hit wonder games.
I also think it will eventually die down but there are more than kids playing it. I've seen and heard stories of so many adults who are into this game.
Not really my thing.
I don't know the hype over downplaying anything else in the world that isn't a "good" MMO from a persons past hasn't lost its steam, even your parents were doing it

Holy Sh*t! people meeting people face to face again lol...
I have to say, I'm impressed with this game. I have no interest in playing it, but the concept is great. Merging gaming with the real world is a perfect way to get your average sheeple to jump on the bandwagon. When you have the government basically advertising your game for you on the highway, it doesn't get any better than that. Next will be the massive news coverage from stupid people walking into traffic or off a cliff from playing this. That is yet another goldmine of free advertising. I saw a news report yesterday with some angry old bag moaning that kids were running around the cemetery playing this game, and that it was disrespectful. I wanted to download the game right then and there just to piss that bitch off some more, but I resisted the urge.
They can push the positive narrative of getting people up and moving more while exploiting the negative with all the warnings about how no one pays attention to anything but their phones these days. I have to admit, it's very smart. I wish I had thought of it because they are laughing all the way to the bank while millions of people literally mindlessly wander around parking lots searching for imaginary pets. This is like watching the matrix or something. Nintendo does it again.

I don't think Nintendo is handing out cash to anyone for advertising this game. I think everyone else in the world is advertising it just by watching it's progression unfold.

First of all I get where you coming from and I agree to a certain extend except that I don't think a lot of people need it as an excuse or reason to get outside but instead it's a very effective stimulant that actually does get them/us on their feet, get outside and even socialize.
Yes I agree it can be seen as bad, sad, pathetic or any other negative sentiment that a lot of people require this stimulant to do those things but it's a reality.
This also counts for me personally, being an MMO fanatic and having a job with a lot of over hours I never got on my feet in the evening if I sat down playing MMOs tired after work until PO:GO came out.
I'm now breaking up my MMO sessions to go outside for a walk 1-1,5 hrs.every day and already made a few new friends thanks to the game. I'm not just staring at my phone all the time, I also put it away in between when walking to other area, or just take in the scenery at times when in parts of town I never was or only drove through oraround the lake. If it wasn't for the game I probably still wouldn't get out on weekdays at all for a long time.

I would say Pokemon:Go falls into this description.
There’s also the fact that on iOS, Pokémon Go requires TOTAL access to your Google Account, which is a security risk some may not be willing to take.
