I remember reading that there is a loose story or at least a set of goals that lead to an ultimate goal, which reveals something important about the essence of the universe. Maybe I saw it in a dev. Video or something. Can anyone confirm or clarify for me?
There is no "personal story" or quest thread or any such mechanism, but there is general background lore that places things in context.
The idea is that your start on the outer edge of the galaxy and then attempt to reach the center, because there's something important there. Nobody knows what that thing is.
All we do know is that the journey becomes more and more difficult the closer you get to the center. More powerful animals and NPC's are encountered, and more and more extreme and inhospitable planets.
NMS also has a definite "Survival Game" aspect.
I'm glad you've been following it because I really didn't know what to expect of it at all. I was hoping there would be some survival elements.

NMS is not an MMO, so there is really no compelling reason to start playing the moment the doors open.
If you're not absolutely sure about the game, watch a few hours of Twitch on launch day. I can guarantee there will be literally 100's of people streaming game play. That way you can make a pretty well-informed decision.
Really? Then I have to ask, if you don't play games, why are you on the forums of a site dedicated to a particular sub-genre of games, you know, those things you don't play
Not being mean or anything, I just don't understand and would like to.
I think he's differentiating between "virtual worlds" and games.

I'm not sold on this game, but I do think what could come after this game might be worth noting. Like, I could see NMS being pivotal in changing what devs are allowed to try and what publishers are willing to let happen if it does well enough. Also the tech behind it and what other developers do with it might be game changing. Might, we still have to wait to look into it's depths to see if it is what we hope it could be.
Agreed.
However, my biggest fear for NMS is that it will fall victim to its own hype. Many fans seem to be expecting that it can literally deliver anything their imaginations can conjure up. Even delivering half would be a towering achievement, but they won't see it that way, of course.
If NMS is even moderately successful, that makes the case for further exploring (lol) the extensive use of procedural generation. E:D led the charge, but NMS is the next iteration, where literally everything is procedural.
Many modern games use procedural routines in certain areas, but the applications have been limited in scope so far. I don't know any of the math underpinning the process, but the potential seems limitless.

When I get 6 months of game play from a single-player game, I consider that money well spent..
