Is it gonna be like this?
I sure hope they add some chat features or some way to meet up with real people in this huge universe so you can share your discoveries. Single player games are a thing, I know I play lots of them; enormous and infinite empty space single player game is another thing. Will the novelty wear off after a few Earth months for most people? Maybe.
"hey I'm looking forward to role playing the last man on the planet and trying to figure out how to get off it and then goign into space and spending many RL years alone"
Will NPC make the game feel alive to you? FOr some maybe, but most of us no.
Those of you who have seen "The Martian" that is essentially what you will be. Stranded and alone, with no hope of seeing or talking to another being.
I'm not honestly sure people can even fathom that they could literally play this game for 30 years and never see another player, or see anything anyone else has discovered. Real people will seem like a myth. You'll see videos on youtube "Is this a real player or NPC?" The more I study this game the more I am convinced this is some twisted social experiment. Eitherway I will most likely follow the rest of the flock and buy the game to try it out of curiosity more than anything. Will virtual solitary isolation and loneliness be a thing in a virtual universe? No idea, but it will be interesting to watch.

For some odd reason, they call them "single-player games", but we all know what those games really are. Most of those games have loads of NPC's to interact with (i.e. kill), and people spend 100's of hours playing them. Some even go to great lengths to create mods to make those games more lonely !
The best known "loneliness simulator" was "Elite" back in 1984. It set the standard and became a legend. People loved it so much that that they crowdfunded a new, improved version of the original, a version that is REALLY lonely. In Elite:Dangerous, you could play the game for your entire natural life without meeting a single human player or even a NPC !
I'm a bit worried that people may not like NMS, because there's too many NPC's and creatures around. It breaks the immersion. Instead of of just being you, your ship and empty space, it's going to be like modern city life here on earth. You'll be tripping over NPC's and critters everywhere you go, totally alone and isolated in the teeming crowds...

I don't really see this game being a long term thing for most people. I think most people will get it for the novelty and ditch it in a couple weeks. I'm not buying because I know I wouldn't last a month but I'll be watching streams of it to see how it works. I'll at least give them credit for trying to do something different which no one seems to want to do any more. The MMO industry has been stale for 15 years now and shows no real sign of innovating much in the near future. I guess everyone is busy making junk like pokemon go walk into traffic and be the next Darwin award winner.....

No one who knows what this game CURRENTLY is is calling it an MMO. No the Devs do not count if they have said it, and I don't think they have unless they are talking future plans.
I'll say it again: The amount of people who are going to be extremely disappointed in NMS will create the Internet shitstorm of our time.
Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.
and in my view this is why gaming focuses on the young. They dont have the vast experience of being bamboozled many times as older folks have

No idea what the player is supposed to do...
kill all inhabitants?
bring democracy?
mark territory?
catch them all?
Need more info!
What about the game "Journey"? From what I understand one just "explores". You might see people or might not.
Funny enough, a girlfriend of mine who doesn't like video games actually played it with a friend and that was the game she loved.

Personally I'll wait for some reviews, let's plays, and twitch streams before buying.

I would expect the same for Elite: Dangerous. Too good looking of a game to have unused multiplayer capabilitty.

'so large chances of you seeing someone is nearly Null'
'why isnt it multiplayer?'

Personally, my interest in this game has cooled, but my son is still eager for it, so it's on the buy list and I'll be trying it natch. At the very least, the NMSDS (New Man's Sky Derangement Syndrome) has been amusing.
They skim-read a feature headline and then make conclusions based on their own experience. It probably all started when someone thought: "NMS is an online game, therefore it must be multiplayer..."
There's no record of Hello Games ever calling NMS a MMORPG.
It is sold as a single-payer game on Steam.
So where's this "con" exactly ?
In the minds of players that couldn't be bothered to check the details, I guess...
