As the above poster mentioned, MUDs aren't a bad place to start, though you're probably best off if you stick to MUSH and MUX codebases. Codebases like ROM, Diku, Circle, Envy, and Smaug tend to be more like typical MMOs in which you kill stuff, loot stuff and level up. There are exceptions to that, since implementors can do pretty much whatever they want to the code, but the stock codebases for those comes "out of the box" pretty hack and slash. MUSH and MUX (and sometime MOO) codebases are based more on the talking and building aspects of online play, which lends them well to roleplaying. That's not to say there isn't leveling, but it tends to be much more like tabletop games in which there are game masters and campaigns (usually called "tinyplots"). Anyway, definitely worth a look if you don't mind text.
