Hey peeps.
I am currently downloading the game, got a 7 day pass so wanted to try it out.
Based on the reviews, this is a P2W type of game, just wondering has anything changed with latest game updates/patches regarding P2W?
Also wanting to know how the population is in this game?
If you could compare this mmo to another so i get an idea, that would be great as well.
Been playing EverQuest/EverQuest 2 all my mmo life so wanted to try something different!
I am a casual player, love to quest and follow the games lore, take my time etc will BDO deliver this to me?
Thank you, and sorry in advance if this question has been asked, some are pretty old so wanted a new update on this game.

Seems to me this game is best for people who like to imagine content and pretend there's a meaningful goal.
The world is pretty enough - and the movement/combat is fluid. There's plenty of grindy activities to fill up time as well.
The game actually has more text and intractable npcs than most MMOs.
Zero dungeons or anything like that, which may be a bit startling.
It's not p2w but you'll want 3 pets at endgame. If you're casual, you may never need anything (although you might want to buy an outfit, which are expensive. If you go with the value pack, you can dye regular armor to look pretty cool though).
All in all, you'll get a very good idea how the quests/lore are in your 7 days. It doesn't change much from that experience.
Not exactly a surprise, given the quality of the translation and the voice acting.
I'm sure the game is great if you're into whatever it is you think is good about it, but being dishonest about its failings won't help anyone.
The real rich lore was actually found somewhere else in the world, right? I need to play it for hundreds of hours to appreciate just how rich it is
Yes, yes I get it. I've head it before.
But if I spoke to a dozen quest givers in WoW, then yes - I would have a pretty good idea of the quality of writing and presentation of lore.
I would never claim WoW was great in that way, though, because it's not. But it's certainly a vast improvement over the horrible mess that is BDO when it comes to story and delivery of such.
For your sake, though, let's just pretend that the game changes quality of writing, translation and voice acting at some mysterious point in the game that I've yet to experience.
BDO has lore, but don't expect quests à la SWTOR, ESO or TSW. There are no dialogue choices, nor any big name voice actors voicing the characters AFAIK.

The thing is you mentioned Everquest 1 and 2 and the quests. This game the quests are not complicated or very deep they are quite simple. There are some good ones but most are there to introduce systems in the game. It has characters interesting ones but you will need to read their description from the knowledge you gain about them. You are not going to find many things about them unless you read some of the snippets that pop up while logging in or you read the knowledge you have on them.
I do enjoy the rather ambiguously evil black spirit that is for some people very jarring and they positively hate it but I find it interesting.
My first MMO was in 1999 and I played Everquest. I know what type of game you're looking for and this may not be it, so I am asking you to just try the game and try out the systems in the game before you decide. I have been so engrossed in this game as I am always having a goal to achieve and I work towards that goal.
See what I mean is when I first started playing, although I spend a considerable amount of time reading up about the game, I was still baffled by it. I was determined to try out certain things and after I learnt how the node system worked I managed to make my first million by selling fish I caught in Velia in Olvia. This intrigued me I decided I wanted to try trading. Initially I used my donkey and I graduated to the flimsy wagon and finally to a farm wagon. This then got me into farming so I could make trade goods to sell. As I was involved in trading I was given a quest to tame a horse. Which I failed at abysmally and I had to get help on these boards. I got good at it and even tamed a tier 3 horse so I am quite happy and I am now looking to get into horse breeding.
I have saved enough contribution points which you will learn about to now open a wagon workshop where I am making my first merchant wagon. I have even made a row boat which I took and explored all the islands about near Velia. My highest is level 31.
I had a harrowing time getting the two birch nodes to get enough Birch timber to make my very first fishing boat. You won't believe how many times I ran in and out almost dying trying to talk to the node managers but I DID IT!!!!
All this and I have said nothing about the combat or PvP. Well to be honest the combat itself is fun. I love it but the mobs are very easy they are not demanding in any way. Well the bosses are like when you do your Spirit coops but the normals are quite easy but for me if I want a game where I need challenge I can go play some other game but to find the type of trading, farming, fishing, horse breeding and character development (I just made skilled gatherer and got me a new outfit from a quest it made me smile). The reason I am so slow is that I have my skills scattered among 5 characters instead of concentrating on a few so you can see as a result I have not advanced much but I have 140 contribution points and I am still gathering them as I am going to get my ceramic workshop and get my furniture upgraded and really go mad out decorating.
I do not PvP so I have nothing to say about it.
Some people will not find the way I am playing this game enjoyable to them at all but because of my approach to this game I have found immense pleasure in playing and truly loving it. This game has such wonderful systems that work to give me a feeling of actually surviving in a world and the world of Black Desert makes me feel like I am an inhabitant and not a player.
The questing is very much like EQ2, perhaps more simple. There is less emphasis on quest lines, more emphasis on individual quests.
Combat is quite action paced. Akin to Guild Wars 2 in many respects. If you enjoy the combat of EQ2, this is very different.
There are clear eastern influences, in both the lore and UI design. It can be a little over the top at times - especially when you first pick it up.
For those reasons, I did not stay in the game. It did not feel like a cohesive experience and those little things irked me enough in the end.
On the other side, the game has a lot of unique features. Contrary to most threads, PvP is not present until endgame. If you take it casually, it is perfectly viable (and enjoyable) to explore the various areas and game systems, on your own, with no intrusion.
There is no subscription - I feel like I got good value out of the purchase. When I was playing, it was not clearly P2W. There were a few items in the gray area, especially for endgame PvP. That said, I did not feel like my work is useless. That generally is the cash shop dealbraker for me - you spend 10 hours questing for a sword, only to be bombarded with the same sword on the cash shop. This did not happen here.
All in all, from my perspective, it was a nice breath of fresh air. But it was not the MMO that would consume me for months. If you are looking for a long term replacement, I'd say no. If you want to have some fresh fun in the short term, I'd say yes.
As for DKLond- dude you talked to 12 NPCs and you are claiming to be an expert on the lore and quests in the game? And you're calling other people dishonest that disagree with you? Seriously mang?
I'll agree the voiceacting is pretty bad but at least the game has it, unlike say WoW. That has nothing to do with lore though.
And I fundamentally disagree that WoW's lore is some kind of gold standard. It's quite frankly a hot mess.
Ok! So i have tried 2 different character's one is already level 17, I'm still on the tutorial island.
At first it seemed very confusing, i mean i loaded into the game and everything was just BANG IN YOUR FACE type of feeling, i had no idea what i was doing, took me about couple of hours to learn the basics (still learning), the combat system feels like it could be improved, but it really doesn't bother me i guess.
Game has beautiful graphics, quests so far seem OK and straight forward, pretty simple, which is not bad.
My only concern is, needing "energy" or some sort to actually talk to other players? I have noticed this when trying to talk in world chat, is this just a tutorial thing? Does it improve?
Overall just with a couple of hours play time, i am enjoying it so far, still to early to tell how it will go, but will update as i play and learn.
Energy recovers pretty quick and you get more as you go (you get energy when you learn everything about a subject- like meeting everyone in a town). I have 115 energy but people in my guild have over 300.
You don't really need energy too much in the game for anything. They removed the energy cost for crafting recently. Mostly it's used in gathering or the recently added night vendor.
I still don't know if i am on a "tutorial Island" can't seem to figure out how to leave, but i am still questing and level 19 so far.
Overall, enjoying my time playing, taking my time not rushing. Only thing i hate is you have to buy outfits and such, also the dye system is just stupid, really it is. But i can understand why there is a store for most of the things players might need.
No monthly fee, new content with patches, quick player support based on player reviews. They gotta get paid some how, right?

I cannot build that merchant wagon yet and I need the extra stable place too to register the damn thing so looking at about 16 may be 17 points more. I knew I was missing something what a dolt.
Well meanwhile I managed to get some of my workers promoted to gold after failing every test before and I blew all my energy in Calpheon but got me an artisan worker to get my Birch hmm another 14 points for that shipyard in Altinova but I am connected all the way to Olvia so I can put 14 workers at least on my construction. Totally worth it.

"You're either with us or against us"
The only 1v1 pvp that happens is if someone is trying to be a jerk, and that rarely happens and doesn't even matter since you don't lose xp anymore.
Plus it takes significantly longer to increase your gear as you get better gear, just like it takes longer to level, meaning someone with great gear will take 2 weeks to improve it while someone newer will get significant gains in a day or two.
In any case though, the OP said he's casual, so I doubt he'll be hitting 45 any time soon let alone pvping.
