I'd have to go with Morrowind on this one. Too bad combat is so bad that i cant play it anymore.

Close second would be Gothic series, with Gothic 2 in the lead. Actualy i adore Gothic 3 with the community patch, almost tops the list, but Morrowind sense of wonder when you explore, the different lands, the dangerous parts you simply dont go and leave for when your a badass,... amazing.

If going by purely the one I have played through the most then it would be Chrono Trigger. The only I have some of the best memories of, Final Fantasy Tactics.

Hell, I still play FFT to this day on my tablet.

As much as I'll probably get hate for this FF8 is my favorite. The story is pretty alright, I enjoyed the character building for it. As emo as Squall is, I really enjoyed the other characters they all showed their own personalities and acted on that in a perfect manner in my opinion. Plus I like the war theme of the game. There's almost no downsides for me with FF8 other than the junction system but I'm alright with it.

What kind of dumb question is this lol.

It should be "what's the best RPG you have ever played"

Unless we have all played the same rpg's this question really makes no sence.
the question clearly states "In Your Opinion"

    Also it is sense

Sence is a designer fashion jewelry brand from Scandinavia....just saying =)
He changed the title which was

"What is the best RPG of all time"

Obviously after my post he changed the title.

So yeah, perhaps if you knew this me and you would not be having this conversation.

Gothic 1. followed by gothic 2+ addon. gothic 3 had a world never seen before, such organic landscapes and forests and more. i have them installed to this day. i truly love gothic series.

besides gothic i played a lot of jrpg and every western rpg from 2001 onwards. i really do not therefore enjoy anything like baldurs gate at all. i never liked it. i always felt disconected because of ismoterci view and i needed details on my avatr, not some small mini figurines. i do love diablo and arpgs though (didnt liked d1 in 1995 because of same stated reason).

currently playing i am setsuna and waiting for FF15.

Most of you probably never heard of Origin Systems or Ultima.  They provided arguably the best rpgs of their time.

Open world with epic quest.   I played for weeks exploring the game world.  You could manipulate almost everything in the 3/4 overhead view world.

First Floppy disk i owned was Alkebeth .. came in a manilla envelope , n a sadnwich bag with a simple card of instructions , so yea kinda heard of Black Gate 7 years later .. Like most here have ...
I had to make a boot disk to get it working on my 386 with 2 mb of ram.  It was always interesting installing a new game back then.  Checking the install screen... having it crash, creating a boot disk  YAY IT WORKS.

Believe it or not with Ultima 7 and its sequel the serpent aisle...  I couldn't get enough memory for the mouse or sound to work.  I played with keyboard only and no sound.

Since Chrono Trigger is getting lots of (deserved) mentions in this thread, I'll also throw out Chrono Cross as an excellent, dare I say underrated, RPG.

There are a number of them that have to be pretty close to each other but my top three that come to mind would have to be in order.

    Morrowind
    Ultima V
    Fallout 3

Gothic 2 Night Of The Raven.

First to pop into mind is Baldur's Gate 2.
Talking about games where thousands of players exist simultaneously in a single instance and mechanics related to such games.

I really liked FF7 when it came out, played it to death, but, there was also a game called Stonekeep, still have the thing though i doubt i have a system capable of running it these days.

Tigger is very much English though. I have Winnie the Pooh the 1926 reprinted one in hard cover. All the conversations are all very typically English.

If you notice he says 'tata for now' also very English.

I come from a former British Colony and we used to import a lot of British shows and I simply loved this Hundred Acre Woods characters even now when I am going to be 60 years old in the near future I still watch the show and adore it.

I loved that Chrono Tigger reference thanks for that it made me smile.

Nah.  Winnie the Pooh is preety widespread.  It was present 20+ years ago in Poland too.

I never though of it as US thing to be honest, It has not crossed my mind even.
Winnie the Pooh if/when it was associated with a country it was UK.

Neverwinter Nights because it introduced me to persistent worlds, something I still wish was around -- whole communities based on a single world and story with everyone in character. Of course this was based on the server I chose but it was grand and it eventually led me to MMOs.
There are lots of NWN PWs that are still running. Its amazing how after all these years, people are still creating content for it. Its definetly on my list of the best games ever made.

Baldur's Gate 1 if we're being objective, Suikoden if we're being subjective.

Hard one, played many good ones
But ones i have fond memories from is the Ultima Underworld 1+2 games, then U7 and U8 was quite cool even if never managed to finish them.
Then of course the entire elderscrolls series, loved the 3D map in Daggerfall for instance, sad it is not in newer games made exploring dungeons more fun.
Wizardry 8 is ok to but haven't played it that much lately, Legend of Grimrock 2 seems quite nice to.

tie between KOTOR and the entirety of the Mass Effect series. Shame the true Bioware doesn't exist anymore.
