Fear of spoilers or fears that people will see it sucks and dodge the $60 dollars bullet?
Personally, I'll risk the possible disappointment to save the chance of an exciting and rewarding game play experience.
Exactly. I have to be careful about my spending, but I can afford to roll the dice on a game every other month or so and for August the only thing I'm interested in for the PS4 is NMS (What? I'm supposed to get Gal Gun? Lol). Since I haven't overbuilt my expectations, it's a comfortable gamble in which I have made room for the possibility of being pleasantly surprised.
Reminds me of the guy that hacked Valve and got access to HL2's source code, then contacted Gabe Newell because he "wanted to help". The FBI nabbed him during a staged 'fake interview' because he thought he was getting hired.
I'm not saying this is anywhere in that ballpark, I just find it to have an unsettlingly similar enthusiasm-to-common-sense ratio.

In all the world, only ONE copy of NMS was stolen and offered for sale ? Really ?
And the guy who bought it was "responsible" enough to stop posting any more vids after the first two excellent teasers ? Really ?
And Sony have not banned is PSN account, even though he showed the world his username ? Really ?
However, I'll bet this "leak" caused a spike in pre-orders...
yes.
why would it be clever marketing to release thousands of copies?
also...in a game that is supposed to have the largest universe ever, so much content that multiple lifetimes would never be exposed to the same planets I have to ask, why do we give a fuck about 1 guy with 1 week lead time? what can he possible show that will 'spoil' the game?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Oh yeah one more thing: maybe I'm old school, but I'm confused as to how one plays a leaked copy of a MMORPG: wouldn't Hello Games notice one guy running around their servers before anyone else?

That's probably because NMS is not a MMORPG, lol
You can play it offline, everything happens in your game client.

So... what happens if I'm playing offline and "discover" a planet that's already been visited by someone else since the last time I connected?
Isn't a big portion of this game 'naming' things? At least, that's what the interview with Stephen Colbert led me to believe.

Given that quite a few leaked copies have been posting gameplay streams on the web, it's unlikely that it was a "clever marketing ploy".
It was just so perfect that the first known leaker was so "considerate" in not revealing any spoilers. It was almost too good to be true...
The subsequent ones have been less so. I guess they had to go further to get the same amount of attention as the first guy.

wait what?
1. ok let me see if i get this straight, its likely not a marketing poly becuase its more than 1 but less than a billion? what is the exact number of leaks that makes it unlikely?
2. again, it should be mathmatically impossible for any person or persons to 'spoil' this game within a week. There is supposed to be enough content to last multiple lifetimes for EVERYONE..if you recall

I initially thought it was a "staged leak" because there only seemed to be one leaker and he conveniently stopped posting gameplay footage after the first 30 minutes, claiming that he didn't want to spoil anything for anyone else.
It just seemed suspicious while there was only one known "leak".
But more and more streams have appeared from sources other than the original leak. Most of the subsequent streams have apparently made no effort to avoid spoilers, so it's far more likely that these are all "genuine" leaks, given that the streams are completely raw footage.
The game world is procedurally generated, but the "plot" and mechanics quite obviously will not be. So it's quite possible to have "spoilers".
A significant part of the fun in any new game for me is discovering how it starts and how things work in the game world. That's why I've watched only a small part of the second game play leak excluding the whole intro sequence. I just wanted to see what the moment-to-moment game play would be like, and that was sufficient.

I believe what you say about your preferred game play but any game that is worth playing cant be spoiled in a week by any number of people unless its a lineal themepark game more than its a sandbox game which I suppose is maybe the case here

Even in a sandbox game, the mechanics are fixed quantities.
I do not want to know beforehand what kind of planet I may start on, or what the "lore" (if any) is behind the starting situation. I do not want to know the "fastest" way to upgrade my stuff and the "quickest" way to get to the center of the galaxy.
That kind of info is a spoiler for me.
I intend to start the game by pointing my ship at the center of the galaxy, then making a 90-degree left turn and just keep going...

Nope, I only watch "Let's Play's" when it comes to MMO's !
I would never watch a "Let's Play" of an RPG before I'd played it myself. I never watched 1 minute of game play before buying Skyrim or any of the Witcher's or Fallout or Deus Ex. Those titles I normally pre-order anyway, so "Let's Play's" are nonexistant.
I class NMS as similar to any open-world RPG that I've played. The only reason why I watched 20 mins of random game play from the leak is because I still wasn't sure what the actual "normal" game play would be like. I had lingering doubts. And was massively curious...

wait let me get this straight
You see NMS as an 'open world RPG'. Again sorry but I dont believe you.
I DO believe that you do not watch Lets Play videos for story based RPG games. I do NOT believe you that you see this as a game similar to that. Yes it has a story but no I do not believe you that you see the story as the central point of the game like it would be in an story based RPG. sorry I just dont

Not the story, but the game mechanics.
The whole point of the game is discovering how things work, where to find resources, how to interact with NPC's, etc.
I do not want to know all the answers to these puzzles, the whole POINT of the game for me is discovering these things. Looking at all the weird and wonderful scenery along the way is the other half of the fun.
I do not want to know the number and nature of all the different upgrades that exist. I want to discover them. I do not want to know the number and nature of all the different NPC's that exist. I want to discover them. I do not want to know the number and nature of all the different animals that exist. I want to discover them.
If I ever become completely stuck on something, I'll reach for Google without a doubt. But not before I've tried my damnedest to solve the problem for myself !

so now your doing a complete and total backpeddling on the 'RPG' argument? not even a slide side by just a complete ignore of the very words you said not buy an hour ago.
or are you saying the reason you dont watch lets plays of RPG focused games is because you dont want to know the game mechanics like you describe? yeah well sorry but I dont believe you on that.
more over just so you know knowing what NPCs that exist in a game like Elite Dangerous woudl not be mathmatically possible in your lifetime
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Nothing I (or anyone else) can say can ever change your pre-conceptions about NMS.
You seem to be implying that I'm lying about my motivations for playing games. What do you imagine my "hidden agenda" to be ?
1. yes best I way I can put it without offending mods is that I dont believe you when you say you do not watch Youtube videos of games you might buy because its giving away the mechanics only if its an RPG style game but if its not an RPG style game then giving away the mechanics is fine? not sure. never the less no I dont believe you.
2. I stand by my statement that any game that can be 'spoiled' in the areas of why a person bought it within a week is not a game worth playing let alone a game of this size. no number of 'NPC spoilers' should affect a game of this size. in fact in things like that it should be (and likely is) as procedural generated as the universe is. In fact even the stories in ED is procedurally generated so even that should not be a 'spoil'
3. I think your agenda is not as hidden as you might think, its fairly transparent. You are willing to make arguments that you normally would not in order to simply 'win' in your mind this debate for no other reason then pride.
that is what I think

Are we really saying that we don't ever want surprises and mystery from our games ?
Does "fear of a ripoff" mean that you should know a game so well before release, that playing it becomes almost optional ?
Personally, I'll risk the possible disappointment to save the chance of an exciting and rewarding game play experience.
Far too many people watch "how to play" videos of games and then complain that they beat the game too easily...
I'm not saying this is anywhere in that ballpark, I just find it to have an unsettlingly similar enthusiasm-to-common-sense ratio.

But not before I've tried my damnedest to solve the problem for myself !
or are you saying the reason you dont watch lets plays of RPG focused games is because you dont want to know the game mechanics like you describe? yeah well sorry but I dont believe you on that.
more over just so you know knowing what NPCs that exist in a game like Elite Dangerous woudl not be mathmatically possible in your lifetime

You seem to be implying that I'm lying about my motivations for playing games. What do you imagine my "hidden agenda" to be ?
