One can tell a lot from what is to come based on what has happened and still happening through a year as well as the previous years. So, based on 2014, 2015 and so far in 2016, where do you see the biggest change/shift with MMO's and what do you think this will mean for MMO's in 2017?
I think many now are making more MMO's due to the technology available that has edge over outdated MMO's like WOW as well as the fact they know it no longer has that control over the market as it used to. The fact that also consoles have a far more powerful hardware now makes MMO's far more profitable by how they can reach out to bigger market without sacrificing in too much graphics.
We've already seen this many years ago with DC Universe Online and FFXIV and more recently with the The Division. One thing I do respect though is games like Star Citizen who have this enormous budget not caring too much about the console market. They just care to bring the best possible experience and I think this is a bold move that I've always respected.
I believe in 2017 Star Citizen will be the next MMO king followed by one great MMO. I have a hard time to know which will be the 2nd most popular MMO due to the sheer size of MMO's that are coming, but if anything I know 2017 will be the year where you'll be spending more $ on MMO than 2016 and IMO that's a good sign.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
On a more serious note; I think many MMOs like FFXIV and ESO have now shown developers that it IS entirely possible to make money from console gamers as well, and that quite a few of them don't mind paying for subscriptions.
Which might renew the interests of western developers in the genre.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!
Yes, I'm talking about Trion with Rift, Funcom with The Secret World, Bioware with SWTOR, SOE with DCUO, etc. All of these MMO's came very close to one another within a year or so, all themeparks, all with raids just like WOW.
The long pause in 2014, 2015 and to extend 2016 in production of MMO's in the west has allowed Asian MMO's to reach out this market like FFXIV, ArcheAge, Blade & Soul and Black Desert. I mean if you also look at all other super popular games like Skyrim that came in 2011 and other similar genre games like Marvel Heroes Online as well as Path of Exile afterwards, it just shows the size of the market by how most of these games are still running.

Honestly, it's not that hard.
I have not heard that Undead lab have stopped working on their zombie survival MMO though but neither have I heard any news about it the last 2 years but if it still is in production it would be the only western AAA game at the time (it is funded by Microsoft). I wont hold my breath that it releases but at least there is a slim chance.
I don't think we'll see many surprises 2017 besides a few kickstarter games that go into beta, I seriously hope at least one of them delivers a fun experience (my bet is Pantheon but I don't count out Shards, CU or Crowfall yet, all of them do have at least some experienced people working on them).
I don't think anyone seriously expects SC to really release much before 2019.
MMOs releasing throughout the years have mostly been the same. One thing that will always keep me puzzled is why people value population numbers so much, I thought thats the dev's not the player's job.
