Trying hard to hype yourself for a game.

You know the saying...if there is food left over from others to eat on the table you still are gonna eat something rather than starve to death. Ok, the saying is probably not like that but you get the idea. It's better to play something than stare at a blank wall and roam these forums or just play some game you know you can't wait to move on from toward something different, something new, something you know you can enjoy more.

So, because one of the most popular MMO's around here is finally releasing expansion in few weeks, yea I'm talking about WOW: Legion I'm sure many will try to hype themselves so they can purchase and enjoy it which at the end it will be their win if they do that. Not many of you might be also aware that if you pre-order the game prior to its release you get a character boost to level 100, so it's even more essential to decide before launch if WOW: Legion is for you or not.

So, do you recall in the past trying to hype yourself about a game prior to release and was that a good decision or do you honestly think you could indeed ran out of $ one day where you would need those money far more on something else? When it comes to Legion those who are interested in it what are you doing right now to hype yourself for it?

I for example make a list of pros and cons as well as the things I intend to do that would satisfy/entertain me in Legion more than in my previous games, but I don't want to delay this post further so I'll just add them later on.

Money plays a crucial role in all your posts.
Literally every single topic they create. It's really weird. Why not just enjoy games, instead of focusing on how much you spend on them.

Of course money will play an important factor but I also do know that I would be the least effected by overspending on one product when I know I haven't spent $ on nothing new since January 11th, 2011. This is one of the reasons why I put a serious thought into all of what I intend to purchase.

For me having the freedom to play a game anytime I please in the day for as much as I want for 365 days in the year comes first, otherwise I'll just turn into one of the many casuals that flood the market, where they spend carelessly, but have few hours top in the day to afford on gaming.

It's more like trying not to fall for the hype.  Every game shows a slick video and talks about it's the best game ever.  I filter a lot of this out because if I believed everyone I would have an even bigger list of games I haven't got around to playing yet.

I NEVER have to hype myself or jump on any bandwagon because i do enough research to know what i am getting into.
Having said that, yes i have made some very bad purchases ...BDO,Darkest Dungeon and that Zombie game by Smedley to name a few of the many. However i don't really have any regrets because like i said,i knew what i was getting into,i am just sad that i helped fund very poor game development.
Buying bad games, sets a bad precedent,it gives a developer a bad indication that they are doing great things, when in reality it was just hype/advertising that did most of it.

I don't buy into hype and take the games for what they are not for some imagined "what they will be".

    On the subject of "spending"...
In reality, having seen a massive influx of really bad games and thousands of them, nobody should be spending much money on games, there really is not many good quality games out there.
However SOME games profit simply by being a BLIZZARD game or by simply being an Esport game since millions of gamer's are now aiming at profits rather than just gaming for FUN.

That's not necessarily true whatsoever. Those Esports games aren't only selling because they are Esports games, it's because they are actually fun. I had no intentions of playing Overwatch as much as I did, it just looked fun, and I'm still having fun on it every day, with friends, without friends, nobody is playing it solely to make money that I know. Even looking at games that are huge Esports titles, they are fun to play as well. CSGO is something I play almost daily, and I play just because it's a super well made team based shooter. Sure there probably are a group of people who only play them to try to get on teams and make money, but you have to enjoy what you are playing to get to that point, otherwise you will be miserable. I don't think there is a Blizzard game out that doesn't have some quality to it, so they sell simply because people know they make great games. They might not be for everyone, but a lot of people have fun with them.

I never hype myself for a game. I judge games from what I see (and what is missing). Wishful thinking won't help.

Come on now to just log on to an MMO you're going to need a computer with a few hundred to a thousand dollars...   Then maintaining the bills/rent to get onto the Internet is going to be a few hundred a month.

So sub, box, cash shop...   or whatever other anti-consumer cash printing machine MMOs become in the future, if you can't afford it you have bigger issues to worry about.

    _______________

Then there's the whole side of if you can't enjoy at least a little bit in the WoW's expansion to get your moneys worth, MMO's probably aren't for you.    Since in an MMO most of your enjoyment probably comes with being around/interacting-with people, which means that even if you don't like a game all that much there is still A LOT of fun you can have with it(that being said I'm happy in the MMOs on right now so I won't be there).

    _______________

So I think it's safe to say MMOs just aren't for you.   You're not the audience, and haven't been for a really long time.

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I have never tried to change myself in order to make myself fit into a game.  It's a game not a life goal.

There were a couple of MMO's, STO and EQ2, that I tried to stick it out with because I so wanted to enjoy them.  But I ended up quiting both rather quickly anyway.

If you need to make a pro/con list, chances are you won't like the product. Playing games should be fun. Trying to find the "fun" on a piece of paper is likely not going to work. The concept of "hyping yourself up", in order to enjoy something you won't otherwise, is probably not the way to go.

When worried about money, try setting a monthly budget for yourself. Each month, spend the budget on whatever you feel is the best choice at that given moment. Even if the game isn't flawless (none is), you'll still know you made the "best" investment, given your feelings at that time.

Some games won't turn out to be good purchases. That's life I suppose - you win some, you lose some. With the budget you set yourself, you'll know you can make a different purchase next month.

I never try to hype up myself for a game that literally sounds like I'm trying to hype up myself to eat something bitter. I do research now, no more will I fall for MMOs that uses the WoW concept for example swtor. That was the only mmo where I ended up deceiving myself cause I wanted SWG 2.0. Every mmo that decides to go the WoW route is a automatic flop in my eyes. WoW is an older game so it will always have that edge and advantage.

Now Legion isn't necessarily for me but I preordered it a few months ago because I know I'm going to have fun and enjoy it.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

I just play what is fun for me.

I try to avoid the hype as much as possible as it's nothing than a recipe for later disappointment.

Buying into hype won't make the game any more enjoyable, you'll just feel resentment later when you come to your senses

If you play a game and you are having a blast - it will be enjoyable even if you never heard of it before.

Bottom line - getting hyped is more detrimental than just taking a neutral approach to see is it fun or not - and being unattached to both outcomes.
Yep, this.  I allowed myself to get hyped for Blade & Soul, but then I relaxed, and got control.  After analyzing the game, and playing in one of the betas, I realized this game was not for me.  I did exactly the same with BDO.  I am glad I did, neither was my cup of tea.

It was made all the easier when I realized that there is really no need to pay to beta pre-order any games, since the stuff you get typically only leaves you a week or two ahead of those that don't.

AVOID THE HYPE!  No founders packs or pre-orders sight unseen.  Don't pay a nickel unless you are sure you will like the game.  IMO, if I can't get in a beta or use a free trial, i.e. try before I buy, I won't play.

And there have been several games I did buy after trying them, I'm not a freeloader.  I just want to make sure that I get more than two hours out of a game I drop $50-$60 on.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

I don't know that saying at all.

I can't play dreams, I can only play games. I don't particularly like to play shit games either. People who get hyped up for games are fools. Stop being easy marks and maybe publishers would  learn they have to treat consumers a little better.

Didn't you in a topic not to long ago say that you have paid for every WoW expansion that has been released to date? http://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/comment/7006440/#Comment_7006440

FYI: Mist of Pandaria was released September 25, 2012. That would mean that your whole Jan. 11, 2011 comment is bullshit. Would it not?

Thanks for calling me out in that last thread thou. You literally say you haven't paid money for 5 years in ever topic you make. You're whole "New game" shit doesn't matter. No one gives a fuck. Would an expansion by nothing new? It's a "new" expansion. Hence you're a liar.

All you do is whine about money. It's a little tiresome. Just saying.... Why do you think everyone gives you shit about?

If everyone does it. It's not them it's you. Sorry to hurt your feeling.
