Scorpio is going to be a HUGE step forward. It raises the bar enough that MS does not think that they will need to build a replacement any time soon. It is such a big leap that it will handle VR requirements for quite a long time.
And this was confusing, but decoded; All of your Xbox One titles will work on Scorpio, and non-VR, non-4K titles will still be compatible with the One. But all VR titles will be exclusive to Scorpio.
So it looks to me like Microsoft is diving into the VR pool head first. If they can release Scorpio next year with a reasonably priced VR package, it could be very big, especially if Sony does well with their VR investment.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

I agree that it appears MS is diving into VR in a big way and that this project is a 'pillar' console but the details are confusing as hell. anyway. like 90% of things in gaming, best wait until its out before reading much into anything

Microsoft HAVE to go into VR in a big way, they have no choice.
Because Sony are doing it !
The XBox will become irrelevant if they don't match the features of the competition. It doesn't matter if 75% of the users never play a VR title, it's the perception of owning the "best" console that counts.
And a console that has the muscle to handle VR will also have an advantage in other areas of games. Nobody will buy an XBox if games "look better" on a PS4 Neo...
This is about MS's post XB1 hardware. Not about VR as such.
MS are not saying "we plan to develop lots of VR titles, head sets etc." They are saying "we are going to release a new machine in Nov 2017 which will have the power to handle 4k, VR etc."
Other takeaways:
1. It suggests no VR for XB1. 2. Scorpio will be aimed at the console and PC market. Think Intel NUC form factor and MS's Win10 cross platform strategy, 3. Scorpio specific titles will be backward compatible with XB1. No repeat of the XB360 to XB1 which has been a disaster for MS.
And this fits with EA announcing (with their last results) that the only VR titles they "might" think about developing currently will be for PS4 i.e. no XB1.
(We know that MS is developing other stuff of course; this is not about the other stuff.)
The integrated GPU on this thing is going to be very powerful. The RX 480 has 5 teraflops of compute power. This will have 6 teraflops for an IGP. I think AMD outdid themselves on this one. Should be the same chip going into the new playstation as well. So I think VR capable is going to be more within reach and that minimum for Vive and Rift will be met. It also means the form factor for Microsoft's Hololens can be smaller, but still several generations off where they want to bring it. If Microsoft is serious about VR, it will mean a lot more VR support into the future.

For once I would like to see Microsoft do something first and not try to wiggle in after the fact. There isn't a single creative person working at that company. The only things they have ever tried to innovate with have have failed miserably, so they just went back to stalking the industry.

Well, one could make the argument that MS isn't really creating a "new" console, I mean everything going forward will be windows 10 based - therefore - the increased spec for scorpio isn't anything crazy considering any "VR" titles created for it would also be available on the same Windows PCs, or even windows mobile or wearable devices that would be able to utilize them.
It's pretty much just saying... upcoming gaming hardware will be VR compatible.. ..which they might as well be saying... "Upcoming PCs with compatible hardware will be able to play VR games"

On the contrary... MS does have plenty of innovative products that will eventually culminate into some great forward thinking technological advancements.
People seem to write off the Kinect, but it is one of the best video/sensory devices you can purchase on the market, and quite cost effective. People have even gone so far as to use it in robotics. While its gaming applications at this point were slim, I'd rather have the capabilities of the Kinect with me while utilizing Hololens, or have the Kinect sense my movements during VR than most other applicable hardware.
I don't think people understand what is considered "innovative" these days... especially if they believe the new VR sets to be, in any which way, shape or form, to be innovative.
Microsoft sucks in the innovation department. a company of its size and within the tech industry and as long as they have been around one would expect more innovation however to be fair innovation is not their business focus
