Without knowing what the allocation was, or , at the very least, at least what the allocation was in relation to other items that have sold out, that's frankly completely meaningless.
hardly meaningly but it is a valid point.
thing is this happens every single time a VR headset goes on sale over the course of 5 times total over the course of a year. at some point one wants to see a pattern
The pattern being that it's new tech and production capacity doesn't appear out of thin air.
Based on latest Steam Hardware survey, the number of total VR headsets on all PCs is still lower than GeForce 920M sales in month of July.
clearly and obviously the PS4 itself selling out is all about demand and they clearly had a lot of supply but for a VR headset the same company thought it would be a good idea to pre-order with a complete supply of only 10.
makes total sense...no wait it doesnt.
everyone knows that there is a supply problem with the tech involved with VR compared to the demand requests. Its just most people here ASSUME that the supply numbers are extreemly low and the demand is not high. which might be true but the level of relgion behind that is amazing to me
Based on SteamSpy's data, Tilt Brush has at the moment a bit under 130 000 owners, and afaik it's been bundled with all HTC Vives.
Kinect is a peripheral though, and not that expensive compared to a full VR package. Unfair comparison.
This is correct, but I'd also like to point out that analyst estimates have been sliding down, down, down throughout this entire year, and everyone has been posting the links as they become available. Non - mobile VR sets were supposed to be selling in the low millions by end of year per the first analysis report in April. This month a new firm released an estimate that 800K sets would sell across all VR sets - and this was supposed to count Sony's PSVR system in the estimation as well.
I do believe Sonys set could hit 800K - at least worldwide if nothing else, it is striking how the first analysis mentioned that sony alone could sell nearly 6 Million units, and that the Rift and vive together could sell near to 3 million.... and here they are months later expecting no VR sets accumulated to reach 1 million.
and at Kinect being a peripheral..... thats what VR headsets are, they are peripherals. You're connecting them - in addition to - your system, just as kinect is a peripheral, a keyboard, a mouse, a game controller, the playstation eye, a wii balance board, a driving wheel, those crazy vibration chairs you can buy and plug into your PC for flying games, or those tiny LCD screens they sold with the PSONE.
All peripheral devices, just because one is less expensive and more popular doesn't mean the others aren't classifies as one.
FYI: Sony VR, HTC Vive and even the Gear VR all might be better options for an overall VR experience that the RIft. However, if one wants to get a really good baseline experience down of the best visual. lowest screendoor effect, with the best response to motion then one needs to demo the Rift. I am not suggesting to buy one, I am suggesting one should do so to get a baseline of current generation of VR. From my understanding marginally speaking the Rift is the best option in quality of these areas
Have you tested the Vive? I found it to be much better than the Rift, and PSVR was fairly on par. Have you tried anything else other than the Rift? Are you speaking from experience?
That being said, saying "less" screen door effect would be true in regards to Gear VR in comparison to all other headsets... but less does not mean "none" ...

I trust that this review is very likely very accurate.I dont believe that my personal experience can trump all other reviews as a factual statement. If you have some reviews that counter this one on the specific points I mentioned then I am willing to read them. But I do want to stress my experience of a device is not the gospel as fact thus invalidating all other reviews on these specific datapoints however if we can find many other reviews that counter this one on the specific data points in question you might have a point. However I am more inclided to take a aggregate of reviews over your personal experince on the specific data points in question. does that make sense?
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Going to be a lot of angry PS customers once they realize that their fairly expensive kit just barley work on the console they own and that they will have to buy a new console to actually get the expected performance out of the headset.

Maybe my eyesight is getting worse (I had 20:15 last it was checked, years ago) but I didn't notice any screen door effect on my S6; it was crystal clear.
Overheating is another matter, though. It's not terrible, but it does take some creativity. I've found turning down brightness to minimum, enabling airplane mode but keeping WiFi and Bluetooth on, and having a cold gel pack standing by is a workable solution.

You act like I haven't spent quite a bit of time linking reviews in the past stating the vive is the better system overall. How soon old threads get forgotten it seems. Just click my little name and go through my post history.. I linked over 3 reviews in a single post.... Both sets have the same resolution....

. But that being said... With the note 7, the newest and "best" Samsung phone out... it really depends on the game mostl. Like the lost world demo looks great.. but a lot of games the pixelation is clear as day.
Before I start running around like a chicken with my head cut off screaming that the VR Messiah has arrived, I'd sure like to know some hard facts and figures such as how many units they were given to pre-sell and whether or not they had a limit per customer. Re-sellers camp the hell out of things like this just so they can turn them around on eBay for a huge markup.
Basically they didn't produce or deliver enough units. It is spin to make it seem over popular. Now if they said 100 million units, the just might have a point.

Meh, I've played Eve Valkyrie and Elite Dangerous with Rift and I do not see the justification for the pricetag historic be able to look around the environment or other actions with head movements. Shoot Elite Dangerous plays just fine with Track NoIR or whatever it's called. In not on my PC ATM and it's been a while since unused it.
So again, hundreds of dollars to wear some monstrosity on your grill just to look around the environment is gimmicky and will go the same path as 3dtv when people start wizeing up

Plenty of games play just fine without VR; exclusivity isn't the reason I believe in the tech: it's because it adds so much, from my perspective. It isn't just the looking around: you've probably read sentences like this many times, but it's a conjunction of a great number of factors creating the illusion of a "real place". I understand that it's a lot more work for the devs, the hardware isn't perfect, the software support is lagging; it's still such a compelling experience.
Besides, William Gibson, the man who coined the term "cyberspace", agrees with me:
My initial outlay was $280 for a VR-capable phone, $80 for a top-of-the-line mobile headset (after a $20 trade in on my old phone), and $70 on software. Even by conservative standards, $430 to get in on a new computing trend is well worth it considering what it is.

I think most people don't really consider a cell phone to be a VR purchase, I mean I didn't buy my phone with the premise that I would use it solely for VR, but it has the capabilities, and the Gear headsets are very cheap -- I mean the first generation gear sets are marked down across the board, you can get one new for 70 - 80 dollars, and the new version that utilizes USB C (you can get an adapter for the older models) is 99.00. But people can check online and buy on amazon or other places the same headsets for much cheaper simply due to the fact a lot of people received them for free and didn't want them.
Unfortunately VR right now is a mixed bag. My motion sickness has been minimal, but today I did try a game from the Cardboard Library that just completely sickened me. Put me off wanting to even put the set back on.
I am not generally prone to motion sickness either.
Sometimes you do get some good gaming experiences, such as InCell VR - which I feel is one of the better gaming experiences across a lot of platforms I've tried. I have just setup Vridge to see how some of the newer steam games play as well.
I still completely understand the thought of VR as a gimmick. In some cases it very much so is. Watching Netflix or Hulu on the Gear isn't comfortable... but the Invasion short was a nice diversion. Not revolutionary, but a slightly different way to view entertainment.
I mean, when you really get down to it, it's a sense of immersion, but, it also gives you the opportunity to miss out on the focus of the entertainment you're watching.

From the moment it was announced, I've always thought PS4 VR was the one to watch if for no reason other than the fact that Sony has the corporate muscle to get exclusives developed for it not to mention their huge, captive user base.

I have my current PS4 a buyer so no big deal.
I'll be laughing my ass off at you another jaded PC player. Oh and I also have a kick ass PC.
Kind of like these forums where people post "news" but with no numbers associated to it. Quickest sellout in history? How many units? 500, lol? Skyrim had millions of copies pre orders and was back ordered for a week on release day, that is what I call amazing. I called 2 of my local EBgames and asked them about VR sales, both told me it was awful, lol. Nobody cares about VR, and like I posted over a month ago, those that get a VR Set is simply to show off their tech to others, they'll barely play with it. VR tech was never meant for gaming, it wasn't 20 years ago and it won't be for another 20 years. No one in their right minds will want to game with a contraception over their heads for hours on a daily basis. VR tech is the kind of gadget companies are gambling on to sale a crap load to profit on the ignorant and then stop manufacturing all of a sudden once they reach a good profit margin and sales halts to the point that it's no longer profitable to keep building these once upon a time cash grabbers. That's the world we live today, in North America anyway, where people buy just about anything simply to show off and in the process have problems paying off their rent / mortgage, lol. I don't care what "cool" games releases on VR, I'm not playing with something over my head, tried it a Best Buy, barely 5 minutes in and was annoyed and never again will I try VR. Also stop hyping the stupid thing, every day I come on these forums you always post something "new" either on SC or VR, it's getting freaking annoying.

lets think about that for a second.
This is Sony. They create the Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. I think they know a thing or two about product releases. why would they release this one product out of their entire history to have a supply chain of only 500? This is not their first rodeo.
Also, every time a VR headset is introduced it sells out, not once, not twice, not three time but it appears four time now.
Also, every time VR has a demo at a convention it has the longest lines.
Also, the majority of floor space for GamesCom 2015 was dedicated to VR
Also, literally billions of dollars are currently being pumped into VR content by TV, movie and game industries.
Also, the first porn VR convention had so many people the cops had to shut down the convention.
hardly 'nobody'

The most impressive thing I find about your post is that EBgames is still in business.

you obviously didn't go back and read the articles I posted... your "specific data points" are just your way of saying "Oh I could go back and read the reviews that talk about each and every point between the two sets but instead I'll just repeat "specific data points" because that way it looks like I"m right"
Grow up, plenty of reviewers have tried multiple sets, including me, sorry to disappoint you, but the Rift isn't the "best buy" in the VR world and excels at NOTHING. Not image quality, not motion blur, not resolution.

ok we are going to do this:
For the 3rd time I say
'I think the Vive and the Sony may very well be the best VR headset choice over all however for specific things Oculus will be the best option and if one wants to see exactly how good VR experience can be at a more technical level they need to test out the Oculus.

Again, forgetting the development kits were out for everyone since 2012. Again, forgetting that google cardboard has been out since 2014. Again, dismissing that Gear VR has been available for over a year.
You can't tell people to wait, the industry isn't waiting. The industry is selling it to US right now. And telling people "wait 12 months from october" is just you buying more time from when you said before to wait 12 months from when the CV1 launched or the vive -- most businesses don't last their first year, but in a year you'll be telling people to wait again for the next year and the next, because simply put, VR isn't ever going to be the preferred, or even remotely popular gaming platform.
The sets are still bulky and too heavy for long term use. So many games require standing and movement, even WITH a controller. (one of the best and most popular games right now is called "finding" on the OR store - it's uncomfortable, requires you to stand and look around. Looks good and can be fun, but not something anyone would want to play or could play on a couch, in bed, etc.)
And therein lies another factor of why VR will never truly be more than just a niche. Even games like Hero Bound aren't really comfortable to play, even though I've played probably about.. a couple hours of it over the past couple days.
As a regular game it would be mediocre at best... most people would complain about the views, the stale gameplay, the rehashed level design, but because it's VR the poor distance viewing and non movable camera is a "feature". Everything else is okay, because, and to be completely honest, the game does look fantastic in the "virtual reality" way. But thats about as far as every game I've played in VR has gone. Personally I plan on finishing Hero Bound because I want to see where it goes visually, and i know there won't be much more gameplay left.
People can tout all the amazing things about VR that they want, but even in 3 years time, if we're strapping these headsets to our heads, all we're getting is a slightly enhanced view that can choose to be "immersive" yet unwieldly in most cases, or gimmicky.
Some people will continue to say how great VR is, and those people have to say it. Those are the people that've spent the money on the expensive sets. When sets get more afforable.. actually - no , take a few moments and look at the games that have been out for months and years on cardboard, the vast majority of them are still pretty poorly rated -- when the shiny wears off, you aren't going to be left with much for the vast majority of games.
I still completely understand the thought of VR as a gimmick. In some cases it very much so is. Watching Netflix or Hulu on the Gear isn't comfortable... but the Invasion short was a nice diversion. Not revolutionary, but a slightly different way to view entertainment.
this is like year 1 of the first home computer. expecting revolutionary games, movies and experiences less than 6 months after billions of dollars has been allocated to create such experiences is not being realistic.
I HIGHLY suggest to everyone, including yourself, to stay away from VR and VR discussions for that matter, until 12 months from this coming october.
...
regardless of the reason you want to mention I suggest everyone stay away from VR and take a second look at it 12 months from October 2016.
I suggest that even to myself even though I clearly dont.
sorry but what you say does not change my advice.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
you obviously didn't go back and read the articles I posted... your "specific data points" are just your way of saying "Oh I could go back and read the reviews that talk about each and every point between the two sets but instead I'll just repeat "specific data points" because that way it looks like I"m right"
Grow up, plenty of reviewers have tried multiple sets, including me, sorry to disappoint you, but the Rift isn't the "best buy" in the VR world and excels at NOTHING. Not image quality, not motion blur, not resolution.
ok we are going to do this:
For the 3rd time I say
'I think the Vive and the Sony may very well be the best VR headset choice over all however for specific things Oculus will be the best option and if one wants to see exactly how good VR experience can be at a more technical level they need to test out the Oculus.
i suggest people watch this video and pay close attention to SPECIFIC data points they bring up. it is these points I am refering to. Again for the 4th time I am NOT I repeate NOT refering to overall.
would you like me to give you specific timestamps within the video that I am refering to?
Your one video doesn't mean anything. You brought this up regarding image quality, go back to the original post. You specifically mentioned the screen door effect. You specifically mentioned "The best visual, lowest screen door" Well, then I posted this video.. of Rift vs Vive visual comparison, and it says the Vive is better.
Your 1 video.. your data points.. mean nothing.. you're obfuscating it based on this one video. And when I post something, an equally qualified video, you decide it's not right because "data points" lol.
Did the guy in my video say the Rift is better visually or the Vive? Which one did he say Sean?

That being said, saying "less" screen door effect would be true in regards to Gear VR in comparison to all other headsets... but less does not mean "none" ...

Personally i´l laugh my arse off.
This have been a good conversation
Overheating is another matter, though. It's not terrible, but it does take some creativity. I've found turning down brightness to minimum, enabling airplane mode but keeping WiFi and Bluetooth on, and having a cold gel pack standing by is a workable solution.

My eyesight in my left eye isn't as good as it used to be
. But that being said... With the note 7, the newest and "best" Samsung phone out... it really depends on the game mostl. Like the lost world demo looks great.. but a lot of games the pixelation is clear as day.
Basically they didn't produce or deliver enough units. It is spin to make it seem over popular. Now if they said 100 million units, the just might have a point.

So again, hundreds of dollars to wear some monstrosity on your grill just to look around the environment is gimmicky and will go the same path as 3dtv when people start wizeing up
Besides, William Gibson, the man who coined the term "cyberspace", agrees with me:
My initial outlay was $280 for a VR-capable phone, $80 for a top-of-the-line mobile headset (after a $20 trade in on my old phone), and $70 on software. Even by conservative standards, $430 to get in on a new computing trend is well worth it considering what it is.

NOT resolution., NOT best purchase over alll PLEASE read my posts before responding to them PLEASE watch the video and look at the SPECIFIC differences the videos are talking about.
SPECIFIC DATA POINTS
of which 'resolution'is NOT one of them
not only that I EXPLICLTLY stated that I think the vive is better overall but for SPECIFIC DATA POINTS which you ignore I am saying Oculus are better in those areas
do you know what the specific data points are I am refering to?
When I wrote this yesterday I told myself 'you know, despite me saying VIve is a better option and despite me saying 'specific data points' four times and despite me putting that phrase in bold I bet he is going to respond with 'vive is a better option overall'
please read my posts and please stop being so predictable.

There will be one decent game for every 25 POS
Watch history repeat itself.
In my humble opinion of course
"Be water my friend" - Bruce Lee

You can't tell people to wait, the industry isn't waiting. The industry is selling it to US right now. And telling people "wait 12 months from october" is just you buying more time from when you said before to wait 12 months from when the CV1 launched or the vive -- most businesses don't last their first year, but in a year you'll be telling people to wait again for the next year and the next, because simply put, VR isn't ever going to be the preferred, or even remotely popular gaming platform.
The sets are still bulky and too heavy for long term use. So many games require standing and movement, even WITH a controller.
