You don't have to spend tons of cash on graphics to have a pleasant looking game. It's all about artstyle. Okami, for example, wasn't some graphical powerhouse, but it had a quality, coherent artstyle behind it and it still holds up today as a result.
Basically, I expect at least Gamecube/PS2 standards. If you can't provide that very reasonable minimum, don't waste my time. But past that point, prioritize gameplay by all means - gameplay is more important than graphics when that benchmark is hit.
As others have mentioned, graphics are still important. However, it also depends on how old the game is. I understand that you cannot make an older game look new, and I accept those games based on the gameplay. If the game is new, but it looks like the game is 5+ years old; that's going to be an issue. In the end, some of these older games are still preferred in comparison to a game that certainly does have "stellar graphics".
"I have found a desire within myself that no experience in this world can satisfy; the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world." ~ C. S. Lewis
I understand that people would prefer good graphics AND game play, but that will always be the best option. What this poll is about is if you were forced to choose between a game that is pretty but shallow vs one that is ugly but deep.
Saying "both" is the easy and obvious answer, however.
"Saying "both" is the easy and obvious answer, however."
No it isn't. Consider this other alalogy, paying bills.
If you could pay either the internet bill, or your cable tv bill, what bill would you pay? Answering both, shows that such an option isn't realistic. And thus, answering "both" is silly.

So you are telling me that good gameplay can't possible have good graphic? HAHAHAHHAHHAH
It's 2016 ffs, there is NO excuse for poor graphics.

Maybe you really asked the wrong question, it seems you looking more for what are you willing to play type of question.
What are your limits, like I do not play Minecraft because I was around during the pixel years and I am in no way willing to play a game offering those types of graphics in todays gaming world.
Games in production like Parthon and Shroud of the Avatar do not interest me because they seem like they are 10 years old, graphics not the best but I could get past it. The biggest issue there is the combat animation is just not my thing, the fact the majority of my gameplay will be combat this is a big issue and just from that I know my experience would not be what I want...so i move on.
Really in todays world there are a lot of options out there for games but standards have slipped a lot, today I think most games will make their money with kick starters and early access, once the game is released i doubt they will come close to that...anyway, sorry went off topic lol.

Nope. I did not say that. If people are happy with a game having great gameplay and great graphics, then we wouldn't have this thread.
As most have said, keeping both good is best. I prefer gameplay over graphics, but there is a point where graphics can kill a game for me. Bad gameplay can kill a game much, much quicker for me.
I'm not nostalgic for the old 2D-8bit graphics, so those games I will not even look at.
I've got to have both. Bad graphics or bad game play are not for me. I prefer modern graphics, anything less feels like going backwards to me. A game with non-intuitive, slow, or awkward combat mechanics feels more like punishment then fun.
Yet when you have modern graphics your stuck in these small static instances with just a hand full of people because the FPS would suck with the modern graphics and large open world areas with hundreds of people in view.
For me it's definately gameplay. I wish devs would concentrate more on creating interesting deep gameplay. I think it's just crucial for an mmorpg to have deep gameplay.
Talking about games where thousands of players exist simultaneously in a single instance and mechanics related to such games.
It pains me to watch what other people find enoyable, and I am thinking of this video footage showing how someone re-created Mos Eisley from Star Wars with the Unreal engine.
All fluff, and very little gameplay makes me sad.
I don't know the people who made that, but I can't help but wonder, if the same people were given a billion dollars, their game would be terrible, because they wouldn't be good at creating interesting games.

OK, let's play a little game. You run a game company and you have 10 resources to spend on two things. Graphics and Gameplay. The max you can spend on any one of them is 10 resources. Show us how you spend it.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"

You wanna make a game you better live in 2016 and not 1996.
Simple as that, you might enjoy playing games that looks like they are coming from the 90s, I played games in the 80s and 90s, having retro is pure laziness from the devs due to people buy this retro crap for just being retro and these lazy ass devs knows this.
So just stop with your duuh we don't have money what shall we focus on graphic or gameplay, no we live in 2016, there is NO excuse or it.

Bad poll. Should have at least a "Graphics AND Gameplay" selection.
Let's party like it is 1863!
