I just want a newer (less than 6 month old) release that has a large player population for God sake! So many people talking about the newest expansions of this, the latest revivals of that or a free weekend/beta of this and an old, barely populated reboot of that... Where are the newer games, that aren't just expansions to an older one, that have an actual MMO-worthy player population anymore?

New releases and betas I've tried out have a whopping 100 players online at peak hours. Sorry, I can start up a game of Mount & Blade and join a server with that type of population - not an MMO. Other games claim to be MMOs but are hosted on private, dedicated servers like a typical FPS is; Steam is plagued by them like a cancer.

I'm talking about the 2,000+ players in a single, persistent game world that isn't already 5 years old or isn't just an expansion of an older game already.

I don't care about the style. I don't care about PvP. I don't care about crafting. I just don't really give a damn about all those things I used to care about. I just want a game finally!

These are the last two new games I tried recently, and BDO has a large playerbase, so does Blade and Soul. I would say BDO is slightly larger and more open though, not behind a bunch of loading walls.

Don't miss the relaunch of Darkfall.. that will be epic! Its in beta right now so if you have never played it might be a good idea to learn the basics before launch so you don't get raped too bad.

Your post was mostly fine, but this little bit leads me to believe you don't have a clue what you want, and you're frustrated you don't like the games that are available and no one is catering to your burnout.

You want a game that you don't give a shit about any of the content? Apparently a bunch of players is all you want? You're playing a game right now, it's called "The Forum", and there's all kinds of people playing it.

    Problem solved.

In my typical fashion, I was overwhelmed by the quantity and chose by not choosing.  I would say that I've quit MMOs entirely but my presence here convinces me that there is some part of me still hanging on to the genre.

    World of Warcraft.
    FF14.
Only end game raiding MMOs that have a decent release schedule and a good QA department.

BDO and the word Big Release should not be used in same sentence.  The 1K players if that are not big.

Go play WoW at least it has a huge player base.

I feel compelled to ask the OP something.

Why...in concrete terms...do you want a game with lots of players. please be specific

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Maybe so he has more than 100 people to sell or trade with .  It is always nice to have new adventurers to go on adventures with every night.  Not everyone wants to see the same 100 faces every day.  I prefer different people every time I log into a game. Maybe the OP is similar to this mind set.

Dunbar's number caps the total people you can know including real life to a total of about 350 people. I think it is

Not sure what you mean about Dunbar's number cap and 350 but pretty sure he wants to play a game with a large numbers of people playing. 350 would be a piss drop in the wind...

He should probably go play WoW at least it has an extremely LARGEEEEEE population and he will get what he is exactly looking for.  At least what I am taking away from the OP.

Dunbar's number is a number of social connections one can have before the value of social connections drops tremulously. you can only maintain a set number of social connections that can have any meaning more than interacting with an AI bot. That number has been researched and studied to be around (I think) 350.

    Here is an example:
if you play an MMO you might know abour 20 people that you play with fairly regularlly, maybe another 10 that you know very casually in that you have seen them a few times and maybe played once with them.

You can NOT do that same pattern with 10,000 people, its impossible given the time required. Thus, a server that has 500 people is going to feel the same for your gaming experience as one that has 50,000. The only difference would be 'meta'; level data collection which like Elite Dangerous you do not need an MMO model to use and have the data affect game play for everyone.

Its just like if you went to a social party with 100 people vs. 2000, there is a limit the number of people you can know anyway so it doesnt matter after a certian point, that is what dunbars numbers is about

There's a couple of outdated looking eastern ones being released like that Revelation thing and some other crap but those will die in 2 or 3 months max. Nothing to be excited about.

MMOs are niche and always have been, I'll repeat, MMOs are niche and always have been.
One in a million is one in a million -- World of Warcraft. A little less than half the world still don't have or use the internet, yet alone play an online game.

That said, there were quite a few MMOs released in the last 6 months. Take your pick. Population is hardly a basis in a niche genre.
  • MoiraeMoirae Member RarePosts: 3,318
MMO's are dying. Try the old games. The game companies repeatedly have ignored what we're asking for to get a quick buck and now they're starting to pay the price.
