Defined by who? That's complete bullshit.
Reddit, gaming news reporters (many game devs, like the LoL ones call MOBAS MMOs), other gaming sites. Other gaming forums I've been to. And other major sites (Gamespot and Kotaku being big ones).
Just a small list of examples.
Yet those same folks balk at the idea of including the Battlefield series, the CoD series, TF2, Doom, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Age of Empires, Starcraft, Warcraft, Gears of War, The Last of Us, and every other game that allows online multiplayer.
Kotaku and company can use the term incorrectly all they like.. They're still using it incorrectly and can't even be consistent with their own definition if the term.
If everyone said the Earth was the center of the universe because their marketing team told them as much, we'd all laugh at them.
