Fallout 4 mods severely lacking.

I have sifted through a few hundred fallout 4 mods and cannot find anything that adds story or content to the game.  Its just enhancements and graphics with a few building blocks and the sort.  Am I missing something here?

Are you looking on Nexus? I thought there was more than that there, it's been a while since I was on the site though.

If you look at Skyrim mods, the very first ones were re-texture mods. The majority of popular Skyrim mods, released in the first year, are high res textures and critical bug fixes. Second year mods are mainly new items and character models, with some gameplay improvements.

The extremely polished Skyrim mods we have today, are a product of 5+ years of effort. "Interesting NPCs", one of the biggest Skyrim NPC mods, was released in the first year, but with little voice acting. Whatever voice acting it had was quite amateur. Today the same mod is fully voiced with semi-professional voice actors.

Falskaar, the biggest story mod for Skyrim, took 2 years to even release. That is the first version release as well, it was improved since then. "Moonpath to Elsweyr" was the only serious story mod released in the first year. At first release, it only had several room sized areas to explore.

The point is, Fallout seems comparable to Skyrim one year in. Skyrim has 1600 pages of mods on the Nexus, with Fallout having 470. I would assume story mods will arrive eventually, once the modding scene is more established.

One potential difference is that today, modders are split between Skyrim and Fallout. This is both good and bad. You already have several brilliant Skyrim mods (that took years to develop) adapted to Fallout. At the same time, some of the talent will not develop for Fallout, as they are too heavily invested in Skyrim.

We can also expect a revival of the modding scene soon, as Fallout mods come to consoles.

I wonder if the Indie scene is having an effect on modding? If you are that good, why not get together with your team and make a game, getting some money for your time?

Tales from the Commonwealth adds a lot of story.

Skyrim is in a perfect spot right now.  It has an incredible amount of really well polished and creative mods from textures to entirely new regions to explore.  I have over 200 mods on my copy and I almost never crash.

FO4 is in a bad spot with mods right now.  The quality of life mods are working well, but that's about it. The texture mods that are already out are kinda buggy for instance.  I installed about 10 of them recently and 2-3 of them CTD'd immediately every time I launched and I don't have that issue with more than 50 texture mods in Skyrim.  FO4 will peak in about another 1.5 years when the modding scene is more polished and uniform, which is plenty of time since it will take another 2-4 years before another TES or FO game drops anyhow.

I would only use the ENBoost feature of an ENB and not the post processing effects. ENBs perform very badly with the games volumetric fog and lighting. Like in the catacombs where the Railroad is located, my framerate goes sub-1 fps.

There is a massive, huge, gigantic, too-wide-to-fathom, grand canyon size leap from making a mod to making a game. A lot of people don't realize that, which is why there are so many unfinished, half-baked multiplayer "survival" games getting churned out.

Ok, I just want to call you on your bullshit.

I spent my last night modding my FO4 and there are insane numbers of game changing mods on nexus.

There is even a complete new modular house building system and a new framework for items so craft mods can properly be made.

    So... what the hell, man?
Ooh they added items and skins.  Yea thats huge there.

To you it may seem 'severely lacking' but considering there are hundreds of mods for Fallout 4 - and the mods are made by and for the community - then it's entirely possible you're simply looking for something the massive Fallout 4 community has little or no interest in.

What's odd, is this is mods we're talking about, so there is nothing stopping you from making your own, or do you feel that other players owe you one?

Yes now go make me a full conversion mod that gives 2 extra continents with 10 more companions.  Make it snappy.

Honestly, if I could, I would. :) The best I've been able to do is make a semi-working "tank" for my son by using a car model as a weapon and having it fire rockets.
