Worth trying Everquest now?

ZuranZuran Member Posts: 39

Hello Everquest fans!

Well, like the topic says, I have never tried Everquest before, but would like to. However, is it to late in the game to start?

Also, I have heard that the grind in Everquest is atrocious. Is this true? Are there quests that balance out the grinding, to make it a more enjoyable experience? Also, I heard is that it is very hard to solo in Everquest. Again, is this true?

Also, I will be downloading the Everquest: Trilogy BTW.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: How is the tradeskilling in Everquest? Similar to Everquest II? Or, completely different?

EDIT 2: Looking at the forums, and the website, I have another question image. If you can solo in Everquest (which reading the froums it looks like it), what would be one of the better classes that can solo?

It is very tough to solo in EQ, since EQ was designed to be played as grouped. But it is possible.

I've never tried EQ2, so I can't compare the tradeskills between the two games. I can tell you that even now SOE is working to improve the current system. The system is tough and not really designed to make you ingame cash, but even that is possible if you are careful and watch what you do.

Necro's seem to be the best solo class in EQ. Now, don't quote me on that, I've solo'd as a shadow knight, and never really played the necro, but it's what I've heard. :)

I didn't know you could download the Trilogy O.O

Hmm, seems like new players may have a hard time getting a proper party together to grind efficiently.

be prepared for long arduos grinds with no end insight

you will be awarded for this torture eventually reaching a high level

all this will mean is you have attained king of the  fairy status

grapghics are blocky at best and the game is designed to accomodate  fairies

with a  grind that will leave you feeling like  a punching bag

i seriously doubt many new players will be there so  finding a party will be  hard soloing it will be suicical  at low levels

im afraid this game has been abandoned only people  holding  on are king fairies with hi levels that  dont get it yet

Their are a few nubies but not a whole lot. With the server megers alot of people around agin so could be good. EQ deffinitly is differant then other MMORPG's grind is so bad that eather you get addicted like me and many others or hate the game and call people who play it names. I have played WoW, CoH, Horizons, MxO, and a few others and no game holds or chalanges you as much as eq. There are times when you realy hate the game but when you finish that one quest that takes you weeks to do *unlike wows 15min* you feal a great fealing of acomplisment. But not to many people enjoy real chalanges as such actualy not many poeple enjoy them at all thats why no other MMORPG is as difficult as EQ since EQ came out and probly never will be. Try the free download if you like it then try, but what realy sucks about eq is to realy enjoy the game when higher up you have to get the next expantion cause thats where all the groups are going to be.

Best solo classes in order I feal are best.

    1) Necro
    2) Bard
    3) Druid / Wizard
    4) Beastloard
    5) Shaman
    6) Paladin *only in undead zones realy*

druids solo better than Beastlords?  Hell no!  We have much less downtime than both druids and wizards in solo.

Your number 6 is also wrong... Rangers solo way better than paladins with Endless Quiver and a godly bow.

    1. Druids are way better solo'ers then BLs imo. Root, dot, sit, easy.

    2. ''Rangers solo way better then paladins with Endless Quiver and a godly bow'', I doubt a new player would have those items.

    Thanks

Mages are a fair solo class, in my experience.

Everquest was my very first mmorpg i have ever played. I have played many mmorpgs now and realize Everquest did not have spectacular graphics but the gameplay and community was much better then other mmorpgs i have played. I havent played Everquest since my old pc crashed but realy want to re-activiate my account.

So is Everquest worth trying now? I would definatly say yes!

  • ZuranZuran Member Posts: 39

So, before I give this game a go, can anyone tell me how long it takes to level? I probably won't mind the grinding at first.

  • KaneKane Member Posts: 780

With the new tutorial, should be able to level to 20 in 2 weeks or so? Sound a fair estimate to everyone? Anyway, with the new tutorial the game is infinitely more approachable. Also, their are LOTS of quests, but the journal system leaves a bit to be desired. The grind is nothing compared to Lineage 2. Trust me...I speak from experience...

Hmm, the reason I asked how long it would take, is because another person (on a different forum) said that he managed to get around level 50 in one month. Untwinked.
  • lostmafia91lostmafia91 Member Posts: 12

The person on the other forum most likely powerleveled. it took me several days to get to 20 no more than a week. Leveling in Everquest realy isnt to hard unless your compeletly clueless where to go. On my Barbarian warrior i got to about level 10 in everfrost and butcherblock then just went to crushbone. If your lucky you might be able to catch a powerlevel.

Also if you have a ps2 you might want to consider getting Everquest Online Adventures (Frontiers or original). Noth are very fun games similar to PC Everquests. If you check the thread about EQOA, i wrote a long post describing it.

Actually if you pick the right class you can get level 20 in a day or 2. Beastlords have it easy up to around lvl 55 or so then they need a group until they get geared up. Druids are about the same but the lower levels are a bit more difficult than a beastlord. All classes have their pluses and minuses. If i were starting out today i'd probably make my first character a beastlord simply because you dont have to depend on a group and theres little to no downtime involved.

EQ is and will always be one of the original MMO's that started it all. yes you can pick up a game like WoW, EQ2, or Eve where Grinding is not neccacary, but none of those games even come close to the Depth of EQ, in Content and Gameplay.

There was never a point in this game, even when grinding, when i was bored, always more to do and more to explore. even once u hit the lvl cap, houndreds of AA's and a seemingly endless amount of bosses and gear to kill and get.

EQ2 comes close in content but lacks the gameplay depth, WoW is fun to play but lacks any depth of any kind.

I took a berserker from 1 to 51 in about a month last summer. She wasn't twinked until around 45 or so when I bought her a War Marshall's Bladed Staff (or whatever it is exactly that WMBS stands for). How? Lots of hanging in the hot spots, lots of LDoNs, lots of guild groups, and a little soloing in my late 20's and early 30's when LDoNs seemed hard to come by. No powerleveling though.

I might point out that I was unemployed at the time, and didn't have a new baby then either. I had the time to play a lot almost everyday.

    ::::33::

Two weeks to 20 sounds fair, especially for someone new who is fighting the learning curve.

I would say that EQ and EQ2 are *not* worth the effort if you are just starting out and have no friends to assist you along the way.  If you have friends that are in game already or are good at making MMORPG friends then go for it.  That said my advice would be to stay away from the hybrid classes and stick to some of the classes mentioned above.

    1.  Necro is great for solo but hard to get groups and you are in for a long, hard solo grind for your entire career.

    2.  Bard may be #2 solo artist, but it is a very difficult class to learn and make into #2 solo artist.  I would not recommend this to a beginner.

    3.  Druid/Wizard are decent solo classes with low equipment reliability in the low end.  Unfortunately since KEI is gone for lowbies, these 2 classes are not as easy to solo as they once were.

    4.  Beastlord is truely the easiest class to solo with.  It may not be the fastest, but it is by far the easiest particularly in low levels after getting your pet.

    5.  Shaman are great soloers after level 35, but are much better in a group.

    6.  Paladin are great for undead zones and solo well, however you could put SK in with them or even Ranger later on once they start gettin AA's.

Like mentioned above I would go druid or beastlord if you wanted to solo alot.

EQ is still fun, I have gone back to it 4 times now since its release...so many MMO's come and go and yet I am always drawn back to Norrath...

not true at all, the game is not only for people who are holding on. My friend just started and he loves it. The game is good for everyone, not just people who have played for a long time. I have played for a long time and i know people who just started, it is fun for both long time players and new players. I say go ahead and give it a shot.

I have to agree with drumpt here.  Although I no longer play EQ, most of the guilds I was in while I played are still running strong with new players constantly coming in to replace the folks who have left after many years of EQ.  That said, EQ can seem like a daunting task when starting from scratch.  Getting 70 levels plus 100's of AA's takes a *ton* of time and effort.  Not to mention the whole need for loot cycle you get into.  Getting even moderate, by today's EQ standards, equipment can be an arduous task to say the least.

Everquest is an empty experience, there is an illusion that things will improve as you level up, reinforced by the in game community, but it is just an endless churn of more and more of the same with new expansions bringing out slightly better equipment and much tougher opponents. Most people continue on until they finally realise that the whole excercise has just been a waste of time (not that there is anything worng with wasting time) or die.

The most enjoyable part is the first 50 levels, after that it is all group or raid (ridiculously large number of people) raiding. You will likely get a group if you join the preferred server at low levels but once you get up high there is always going to be a better tank, better cleric or better damage dealer than you around.

This game is dying out, taking it's damned time, but still dying out. It recently lost half it's servers and the majority of players will still be playing 2-6 characters when not raiding to get around the lack of player base.

270,000 subscribers of which probably less than 100,000 are actually different people split between 26 servers take off the number of people who just haven't gotten around to cancelling their subscription and there is probably less than 1,000 people on at any one time, 950 of these will be raiding.

Far too late to start now and to be honest you will only end up disappointed if you do.

  • Unless you can get a free trial, I wouldn't waste any money on EQ.  There are very few new players since SoE themselves are so heavily marketing EQ2 and SWG.  The gameplay itself is pretty mindless and once you hit L70 your only option is to join a raiding guild so that you can jump into the cycle of playing 40 hours a week to ever so slightly advance your character.

I would most deffinatly give EQ a chance. The grind is very hard especially from level 50+, but the 3 years i played it were the best. I can never find a MMORPG now a days that gives me what EQ did for me the first day i started. EQ is much different then 3 years ago, and with the recent release of EQ2 and WoW the population has decreased , which ment less people and less groups, therefore not much chances to actually grind. Server merges have recovered population. If your looking to solo i would say go with either Magician class , Druid class, Necro class, or Possibly wizard class, they all have solo possibilities

If you like being locked out of content you paid for then EQ is your kinda game.
