Star Citizen News - On Sunday, October 9th, the Star Citizen team took to the stage at CitizenCon to talk about forthcoming plans for upcoming alpha phases, what features will be added at what stage of development and so on. In addition, gameplay footage showing a mission carried out on a procedurally-generated planet.

    Looks impressive, very nice, but the demo was heavily scripted. Which is understandable, but doesn't really show the real progress. All the small details, like when he get on the drake and the wind just appear before the drake start to move. The storm was static until the point he got to the trigger location. and at least few more similar situations.
    Also the rover was floating, need fixing :D

    That Planetary Procedural Generation V2 video was nice - had a strong Star Wars Tatooine Sandpeople meets Dune Sandworms feeling.

    That no Squadron 42 example mission was shown was a let-down. Still - if it is not ready, i rather want them to finish it than show it too early.

    The planet design was definitely nice. The level of detail (LOD) systems also seem to be working great, as the performance seemed good. That is something other studios struggle with, hence us not seeing many games with seamless planet transitions.

    The fact that it was heavily scripted is a bit of a let down. The AI, as they admit, is still in early stages. All of the NPCs were likely built directly into their play area. They are not responding dynamically to their environment. This means the developer would have to spend a lot of time placing and programming each NPC - something not really viable for the large universe. It might take them a long time to get that up and running.

    No, this is not the game that would have been out two years ago ! :D 

    This is a completely different game, far more ambitious and difficult to pull together.

    SC may may end up as proof of the fact that games with too large a scope are simply not practical with today's tools and tech, because they take too long and cost too much to finish.

    It was unfortunate really that SQ42 demo was cut from sudden, Citcon was meant to be mostly surrounding SQ42 so was expecting that and bummer.

    Side of that the direction PG is taking is really cool, side of the most scripted parts as the mission flows, it has shown a rather impressive technology behind it showing it's shaping up great.

    There is reasons towards a disappointment on SQ42, because it was them who said the event was SQ42 focused and said to going to show a mission demo of it.

    When they said that, it leads to that expectation when it didn't happen obviously has a negative impact on the whole event.

    They could have played safe if it wasn't ready and get a trailer going instead, so it did not happen, now it's a matter of see if SQ42 makes a stand on the next event opportunities they get, that'll be especially the December livestream.

    Remember when Star Marine was coming out really soon last year? That's what all this reminds me of. Once again a bunch of carefully cut demos with no real firm date for anything at all. Two years past their original release date and they are planning for another year of Alpha? You really have to be delusional at this point to think this game is ever going to produce what was promised. I don't know how long Roberts can keep this smoke and mirrors thing going, but at some point the money is going to dry up and people are going to start asking for refunds more. They quietly removed the language on their website that promised refunds if the project went 18 months past the original release date. They keep changing their plans and moving things around like a shell game, but still nothing actually gets released ever.

    The big question here is when will the money run out?  I still feel this is just another 38 studios mess and they have done nothing to dispel that feeling.

    What's being released soon here exactly? It could have not been more direct, a demo of the tech in terms of PG that they are currently working with and for. It is not for 3.0, it is not for updates right next to 3.0 either; being what V2 adds to the game not going to be used for the Stanton System (neither is the planet showcased on it).

    So they already clarified that, but of course, you'll ignore it and pretend this was something promised to be released soon and CIG are evil liars and and... stuff.

    I really don't care about the "when", this is already looking like the game i used to dream about with my friends 15 years ago. I already thought that this kind of stuff wouldn't ever be possible and there it is... at this point they can take all the fking time they want! Yesterday i was just smiling like a child XD

    Oh and please shut up about the "heavily scripted" stuff not being impressive ^^ everything is scripted inside a game, even unscripted stuff must be scripted in order to work -_- (you can't simulate reality in the end). Obviously that wasn't a very impressive quest but we know they've made it in a very short amount of time, meaning that they will be able to add a ton of content very regularly into the game even if it's fairly simple which in the end is a very positive thing on the long run.

    I doubt it. What will probably take a lot of time to do (and we don't know how far they've already progressed), is building the tool(s) for the AI (i.e. subsumption). It's obvious that each NPC can't be programmed by hand in a universe as large as Star Citizen, so automation tools are necessary. Given the amazing tools they've already developed for creating the planets and populating their respective flora (fauna, later), I don't see this as being that big of a hurdle.

    Perhaps you should educate yourself in regards to time requirements for game development. Even moreso on a game of this scale, which is pushing even the farthest of the bleeding edge. I would add a quote as well, "Anything worth achieving, will not be achieved easily."

    They have several layers of AI going on here, the priority is, of course, SQ42.

    For SC is a MASSIVE thing, the actual solar systems are driven by AI so the game needs ways to generate AI, let it travel across the system, generate the necessary missions and all that being simulated per solar system basis. That one is going to be big but it is fundamental for what SC was always promised to be.

    Other bits is to procedurally generate ship wrecks and such, having that merge with terrain, generate the AI and all, it's easy to do on a singleplayer but on a multiplayer something like this is a whole other level.


    BUT it's good to consider that the Polish phases are fundamental to get the game working, it's far from being only optimization and graphical polish, it's where that famous sentence "the last 20% take 80% of the time" comes from.

    The game is going to be GREAT! It has a TON of support!. I've heard millions of people are leaving their Mmos in anticipation for this. That's a Tremendous amount of people! It's going to be HUGE!

    Millions of people are leaving their MMO's anyway, the genre is suffering one of the biggest setbacks of its history; shall SC save PC Gaming once again? Will the MOBAs fully take over? Stay tuned! :scream:
