Yeah, exactly. Just a couple more Nintendo pieces I have to track. And what happens when the controller to console track gets sloppy and doesn't work right or feel tight.

I agree with @cameltosis that this is Nintendo trying to find a demographic that doesn't exist. What group of beautiful young people all carry around a bunch of huge consoles just to game on Nintendo? Those people are going to be using iPads or Surface 4 if anything. Watching that felt awkward.

They should have improved on their home box device. Sony and Microsoft get it. Nintendo apparently do not. They could have offered portable devices that sync with the home system. They could provide account based legacy game services like the Playstation Now.

This is a definite wait and see for me.
It doesn't exist in the area you live in. But in Japan it does. People buy portable consoles in Japan way more than home consoles because there is no room in most households for multiple TV's and a bunch of consoles. Kids have their 3ds's and Vitas and parents watch the TV. Which is why the Wii U had the ability to play games on the Game Pad instead of the TV.

    Hmmm

I personally think this is going to bomb. Hard. This is coming from someone who has a Wii U and I actually think the Wii U is a good console.

This is yet another console from Nintendo that is sending out mixed messages. Who is it really for?

Its not for "core" gamers - its too small and focused on portability to really appeal to the core gamer crowd (which is the crowd that spends the most amount of money over the longer periods of time). Its not for the casual Wii crowd as its not making use of motion controllers again. Its not really for kids as it'll be too expensive for parents to trust them with at school. Do businessmen really need a whole console designed for them?

The console may well end up having good games and I'm a fan of Nintendo, but it's yet another product with a shit name and completely mixed messages about intended audience.

I wish them all the best, its obviously early days so I'll hopefully have to change to my opinion as more information is released, but for now, first impression is it's a crap idea.
Actually, according to reports the switch slide controllers have motion support, so it's quite possible that this is a mixture of all nintendo's big ideas into one console.

    1) Wii Motion Controls
    2) Screen based controls like Wii U
    3) DS Style Portable gaming
    4) Play on Anything game streaming like the Wii U

I do see some major pitfalls.

    1) Battery life - both on the system itself and the controllers.  It's great you can take it everywhere, but either the system could lose power or the controllers can lose power... it's a reason if I want to laptop game I always have a power cord

    2) Losing pieces.  you're basically putting together a console every time, and nintendo consoles like to gear themselves towards kids that could easily lose parts.

    3)  Portable devices are prone to drops, screen cracks and scratches... how much is it going to cost to replace this?

    4)  If you can take this console everywhere, isn't it going to be a little disjointed with the mobile space Nintendo has just started to embrace?  We're talking about games like Pokemon Go,  Super Mario Run, and Miitomo.

Overall though, it looks great, and I can only wonder how well Skyrim will actually play and how good it will look...  but I guess time will tell.

The first game I ever played was Legend of Zelda back in the late 1980's. I remember my brother and I anxiously awaiting our turn while watching our father play. I will always be a Nintendo fan, just because of that game. I'm intrigued enough from the video to at least follow this console. I've been so disillusioned with MMO's lately that perhaps it's time to go back to console games. The new Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild game releases in 2017. They released two new videos for it today as well http://www.i4u.com/2016/10/116425/nintendo-nx-new-legend-zelda-breath-wild-game-play-trailers-released

Equally f-ing brilliant and completely useless, but god, I want one. All the JRPG goodness from DS and 3DS but also on my tv with a proper resolution? Hell yes!

I agree the market exists in Japan, but Nintendo needs this console to sell worldwide. If I remember rightly, the Wii U didn't do too badly in Japan, it just bombed everywhere else

(I tried looking up figures for Japanese console sales but data looks out of date. Was showing same sales of ps4 and wii u, with xbone massively behind).

It seems a bit gimmicky to me.  I just wished they developed a full fledged power games console which was attracted to third party developers.
  • Joseph_KerrJoseph_Kerr Member RarePosts: 1,113
It looks like they're more focused on mobile gaming this time around, they must have data that indicates this is where they are strongest or have the most potential for growth. I wasn't happy with the Wii U at all nor am I a mobile gamer so i'll be passing on this but I grew up playing Nintendo so I hope it goes well for them.

Or stepping on them and breaking them..

Interesting but again.. Not a really home console contender at all IMO. The device is a bit bulky to be comfortable as a mobile unit and the battery life is probably zilch ( almost like taking the Wii U tablet controller out with you ) and the power is not likely to be there to use at home over PS Pro or X1 S.

Goes back to being mainly a kid device.

Which is exactly what they have done with the Nintendo Switch!

It's brandnew custom Tegra based on the new Pascal architecture.

Seeing in the trailer how Skyrim heavily upscaled on TV when the handheld was docked, it looks like the dock might house a second Tegra processor enabling SLI and boosting GPU Power.

This console will definitely be more powerful than the PS4 and XBone and if the dock is indeed using SLI, it might even surpass the upcoming PS4 Pro.

Seeing the partner list, all major game Development houses and Publishers are on board.

Thinking a Nintendo console of that size will be more powerful than either the newly revised Sony or Microsoft console is pure fantasy.

The PS4 and XBone are using outdated AMD Tech, generating around 2TFLOPS in performance, which is a joke compared to today's tech.

AMD still has not released their new architecture and the PS4 Pro thus won't have it either. It's only 4,2 TFLOPS. Comparable in power to the GeForce 1050, which is considered a low end budget card.

NVidia's Pascal architecture and their direction with Tegra being scalable and bringing desktop performance to mobile Devices.

It's exactly what they are doing lately and Nintendo Switch is going to be just such Device. Housing the new Tegra based on Pascal architecture.
It's defintely going to be more powerful than the PS4 and XBOne. Maybe not in handheld mode, but definitely when docked.

I would have to say it is disingenuous to say Microsoft "gets it" when only Sony comes close to Nintendo in units sold (all machines) and of games sold.  Nintendo outsells Microsoft by about 4 to 1.  The only thing Microsoft does better then Nintendo is the annual sub to play online.

Most of Nintendo is in the portable market, but even the "Failed" Wii U has sold a ton of games.  Looking at games selling over 1 million copies the Wii U outsells (about 4 to 1) the Xbox one with half as many consoles sold.  The 3DS makes the Xbox One look like a total failure.

Nintendo is making the console portable, which is anyone's guess as to how it turns out.  Will it be another runaway hit or just an OK system time will tell.

If you are talking about games you like, then I guess so.

The Nintendo Switch is just about one of THE WORST PRODUCTS IVE EVER SEEN. I'm SICK AN TIRED of all these idiots WALKING THEIR DOGS which never even PAY ATTENTION to what they are doing. They are talking on their phone, texting, playing games, just not giving a single fuck, and all this does is create ANOTHER device to use in PUBLIC which will keep you segregated from actual life. Its stupid.

It's maybe little to big for everyday use or to carry around for a fun quick play time will tell.

I hope you're right bud.  It's about time we had a Nintendo alternative to Sony and Microsoft.

Like i said on another thread, i see this as nintendo scrapping poorly selling wii line and just making 3ds successor that can be alternatively played on big screen as well.

Was hoping they would come out with a high end/high performace console. I'm guessing this is not going to be very high end, but I could be wrong. If JeroKane above is correct, I'm happy.

Cant even get a good tablet for 300. Tablet + controler + base + included game = my guess 499.00 US for base model.

I mean at least it does something my PC doesn't as in be more portable than a gaming laptop. I see 0 reasons to get a peasant station or an xbone. This might actually make some sense for people who spend a lot of time on trains or airports or riding in ubers etc. I'm not a fan of consoles at all, but at least they did something different. I guess we will have to wait and see how well it actually works.

Which might be true but historically consoles are launched at a loss.  Either way... if it launches at $500 it might as well not launch.

I wonder if they market tested the Nintendo Tranny before they settled on "Switch"?
