Honestly, I'm sure at this point they really do feel like that. They originally set out to make the game they wanted to, they got way more attention then they expected to, ended up saying a bunch of crap they couldn't possibly do, Sean probably didn't realize what he was getting himself into. I believe that the game was what they wanted to make, I just don't think they could possibly fix it at this point to what people were expecting. Hence why they have been almost 100% silent since it launched. It wasn't a scam, it was just really really poor management / advertising. If it didn't get as much attention I believe the game could have done a lot better.
Some guys from 3DGameDevBlog did analyze the engine and coding. While they have alot of praise for the engine, they stated that the game was nothing more than a demo.

agreed

the honest truth is despite having record of dishonesty and despite all the reviews EVERYONE knew it was a single player game, nobody was 'confused'
for just reasons or not the entire 'controversy' was a big community run troll move of which I am glad I tried to be clear I was not part of, my beef with the game was different

The game wasn't a mistake, the early release like that... that yes. Imagine how things would have turned out if they just took the initial heat of a move to Early Acces instead.
Agreed. I'd say these poor folks have been raked over the coals much more than is necessary. Their studio will likely go under and probably some will have to undergo psychiatric care to recover from the fallout from a poor launch of an overhyped game. I actually feel pretty sorry for them every time I read another of these tawdry stories.

Don't feel too bad, given how small the studio is, they made more cash that most of us can possibly imaging given how many copies sold.
Assuming Murray shares the wealth with his team, they can all afford therapy...in their vacation homes in Tahiti. If he doesn't share the wealth with that tiny team that worked their asses off for this title, he should be lynched. But something tells me he will take care of his crew.

Tawdry or not it is news and deserved reporting. As other sites have done today. Many sites, including this one, had no problem reporting on the game prior to launch yet like most news outlets abandon a story when it no longer suites their news agenda. If there is no agenda then report all news on games previously covered.
As for the game itself I actually really enjoyed my time with it and it was worth the price I paid. I have over 200 hours in it and do not regret my purchase.
as a side note and related to my long list of other similar games i think people should check out instead of NMS of which you have and I appreciate such efforts i would like to add another one to my list.
LOL they shut down their twitter feed, so now you cannot see any tweets at all.
AHAHAHAHAH Hell 'o Games!
I'm not that Twitter savvy but I have never seen nor even imagined that you could have a "private" Twitter account that only followers could see.
Very embarrassing!
EDIT: Seeing OP's update came up after I had posted this my feelings have changed. I kinda fear for The Bearded Hipster Ones' well being. That quote does not sound like someone "coping well" at all. Did he have a breakdown at work and someone else had to clean up the Twitter mess?
EDIT Part 2: Electric Boogaloo: Now two updates from the Polygon article...
Update: Forbes is reporting that they have spoken to a representative who verified that the tweet was sent from a “disgruntled employee.”
Update 2: Mashable is reporting
that Sean Murray told them, “The tweet came from a disgruntled
employee” and “We're currently trying to solve the issue internally.”
Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.
@bartoni33 By tawdry, in this case, I think it's unacceptable to continue to browbeat these people. If, as pointed out, he's had some sort of breakdown, the rampant coverage and continued assaults on the game, the studio, the employees, etc. only exacerbate an already dire situation. Don't insinuate that I meant anything more than that. It's a terrible situation being made that much worse for the rehash of everyone's issues with the game.

No sympathy from me here. The only thing i feel sorry for is my wallet which had to part with 60 hard earned euros.
What makes things worse is that the big revenue made by the sales is not going into the game. Further development and implementation as promised of the missing features seems to have stopped. They cashed a large amount of money and are closing shop.
Again, no sympathy from me. I hope these guys never make it back to the gaming industry.
If it was a $20 indy game, it would have been praised and totally worth the cash.
At 60 bucks, its a rip-off.
The price was a mistake, certainly they would have come in for some criticism over the game, but i do think that many would have overlooked it, if the game had been priced as an indie game rather than a AAA title, chances are it would have suffered from far less refund requests too. Its a game i might well have paid £10 - £15 for, but it certainly wasn't enough of a game for me to contemplate paying much more than that. Hopefully lessons have been learned from the NMS debacle, it would be a shame if they did fold the studio over this, but perhaps it is inevitable, with these things there is a certain amount of inertia, it would be a shame if that happened, when a more realistic pricing strategy for the game could have prevented so much drama.

This exactly. My first and only reaction to No Man's Sky was, "LOL. I'm not paying 60 bucks for this turd." I would totally have purchased it for 20 or even 29.99, but they wanted to charge a premium price for something that they KNEW wasn't a premium product. I simply won't support devs like that. I have no issues paying a premium price for a premium product whether it's video games, shoes, or anything else. The devs knew the game was bad, and they should feel bad for releasing it at 60 dollars.

I will agree with you there. My personal "eye test" was always telling me that Sean was trying to be too nice and was never comfortable with all the interviews he felt he had to do. They REALLY should have had a pro doing the pre-release stuff. Someone in another thread somewhere on the Interweb (it's a series of tubes) compared Sean to Michael Scott of The Office: always willing to say anything that he felt someone would want to hear to get them to like him. Very apt IMHO.

it doesnt justify his approach however I have to say my bulllshit detector was going off pretty much as early as the first article referring to that first video. Maybe experience? maybe blinnd luck? not sure but its not the first time by a long stretch that my bullshit radar was right.

This story is not a brow beating of the game or company but a cautionary tale of allowing a major company like a Sony put your game front and center to showcase their product, the PS4, only to turn their back on you when the gameplay is not matched by the hype Sony themselves helped create.
I disagree this is a dead horse. In the age we find ourselves in, with crowdfunding, early access and half finished games released for full price, we all can use examples like this to better educate ourselves before purchase. Also game developers, Indie or AAA, can learn a valuable lesson in self control and marketing to better arm their potential customers with the proper information in regards to the product they are trying to sell.
or for that matter hyper hyping it yourself. either way, via a big publisher or yourself, it might be better to just make a good product and sell it once its done.
Then again, they did make buckets of money

Sony blames the media for the multiplayer lie, claims that the "confusion" about that was caused by the hype.
