Too little too late, they're already the least likely candidates for a competent hardware run, and they had the biggest head start. They've sold less than the vive, and the PSVR and they were out before both of them.
VR will never be able to do AR as well as AR devices. They're taking a piece of hardware and making it a gimmick that will never truly work well because it was never intended to.
I feel like they have zero direction. At best it will be used as a pass through camera, at worst, they might try and get people to use it for a game.

Lets see if they can bring that retail cost down on their existing product. 2017 should be telling.

I also feel that Oculus will loose out here however maskedweasels stated facts are a bit bizzare to say the least. 1. I dont know how he knows how many they have sold and ...'vive, and the PSVR.. would NOT be 'the Vive plus PSVR in sales totals' just to be clear. He should re-type that if its is his intent and he should not be stating facts without evidence unless there was some report on sales I missed.
regardless, I doubt Oculus or the Vive are going to drop much in price until their next generation device comes out.

Things aren't looking good for Oculus. You have more predominant companies stealing their thunder. They have to bring their prices down quickly and get some market saturation. I don't believe Facebook holds a lot of weight in the gaming sphere.

Occulus and Vive now have the task of catching up with the others with their 2nd generation devices, maybe even work on creating a 3rd generation device, and they can't afford to take their time either because as long as they don't have a 2nd generation device to compete with the others, they risk becoming irrelevant because 1st generation devices are yesterdays news.

Let's also not forget the deep pockets of Facebook. Oculus isn't the project team from those KS days. This is Facebook's iron in the fire. Whatever the name on the front if the backer is a big player you can expect them sinking big dollars into what they feel is competitive.
Microsoft has the huge advantage here of having a powerful long established reputable R&D dept. Facebook shouldn't be disregarded because they went from a social media site to a full fledged platform to rival Amazon, MS, and Apple in a few short years. They have the money, drive, and talent to pull it off.
They have the pockets.
Hardware is a completely different animal and losses can pile up fast.

most of the assetment comes from KS bias and wanting to make early comments of VR failing to 'mean oculus' but not VR. Those two items are in my opinion the largest biased motivated core reasons people think Oculus will fall out by a HUGE margin.
That said, there are some pretty non-biased compelling reasons to think they will (I say this as an Oculus owner myself). 1. They really struggled with supply chain. It appears they have that worked out but it was a very painful start for them. 2. Valves approach to many things that end up working out at all, end up working out EXTREEMLY well and it appears at least from looking at youtube that the number of Vive videos compared to Oculus is very large difference. 3. Facebook, well they are not a gaming company and they are not a media company (TV etc) so they have a learning curve. is it much? I dont think so because being a technology company in this context is more important. 4. Zenimax trial, if they win they could really hurt Oculus

do you have any links that show this is in fact the case at the moment in the market place and can you be more specific on who the 'others' are.
keep in mind to 'catch up' one has to be in the retail market meaning the best I can tell 'the others' is google cardboard and Gear VR
or by 'catch up' do you mean undisclosed technology, features and general ability of the devices that are not yet in the retail space.?

Not to mention the fact that the Rift continues to NOT speak about numbers, but that analysis of end of year VR has decreased by 80% across the board of April estimates.

Hardware is a completely different animal and losses can pile up fast.
This was originally my fear for HTC, because they've had nothing but loss over loss of hardware in all their revenue streams. I felt they would bow out of the race first, but with Microsoft hitting the scene early next year, I think Oculus would be the first one to try a second gen hardware device that falters and bow out to a software only company by 2018.

You don't see it? the catching up i am talking about, is in making a lightweight, affordable VR headset, with every improvement, and as VR takes off we are bound to see more of them, headsets will get less intrusive, easier to use, more affordable too hopefully, thats the kind of thing that happens. If people want to watch movies using google cardboard or gear vr, whatever, those devices have their niche, i am talking about PC VR, the second generation devices are about to hit, of course the 1st generation devices are going to be overlooked, they are cumbersome and not particularly affordable, if VR is to be successful, this was always going to happen, technology does not stand still, if Occulus or HTC want to keep their hand in the game, then they need to have their own 2nd generation devices at the very least.

yeah to me to 'catch up' one has to actually be already in the retail market when talking about a retail market device and how well said retail device is doing.
never the less fair enough you are talking about 'catching up' to devices that are 1. not for sale yet. 2. hardware specs completely unknown. 3. quality completely unknown. 4. retail distrubution plans completely unknown.
yeah/....that dont work for me
best I can tell devices like Googles new headset rumored and MS device is that they are a cheaper version of existing tech. not next gen

so its a little to early to state as a fact that HTC is selling more. 'a appears that' is acceptable but its not known
They will never release actual numbers because it's currently a failure. You can't prove they're selling more than the Vive, but we all know the Vive is selling more, it's been much better received and they've actually released numbers.
Nothing you can post can really detract from that, or the current estimates that I posted. Please give solid evidence that the RIFT outsold the Vive.

We all know that despite me being on ignore you consistently read what I write anyways, and we know that the rift is failing currently. We know by analyst estimates that they've decreased their outlook by MILLIONS for the end of the year. Funny how the most recent estimates for PSVR are holding strong at over 2 million sold by years end (it was originally slated as 6 Million) but Rift, suspecting a 2 MILLION haul, can't even confirm they've broken 100K (especially since they consistently produced their DK results when those sets reached combined totals of over 100K)
Show me something that is based on facts otherwise.

I believe that you have a hard time following what your saying, never mind the rest of us.
So in the interest of the OP. I think VR getting into AR is a natural and obvious progression. All one has to do is put a camera on the front of the headset and write the software.
Has it been tried with lag? yes but that doesnt mean putting a camera on a pair of glasses and calling it AR before calling it VR suddenly and with magic make those technical limitations go away.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Its clear sean has no knowledge of what the difference is between AR and VR, and what the technological constraints and possibilities of each are.
If you're buying the RIFT hoping to get an easily accessible AR experience with any of its games, you'll be sadly mistaken. At best it will be an attempt to daisy chain off of Microsofts Windows 10 Creator Edition, which will support some AR peripherals, but were mostly created to be used with Hololens.
Oculus won't be able to do very much in the AR field this way, Microsoft controls their AR platform, and their input devices. The Rift will only utilize that which microsoft allows, thereby putting them in a poor position. They don't have the valve support for a steambox, and Microsoft is creating their OS for their devices, such as hololens and this new VR headset.
That doesn't even get into the severe limitations you'll get with running AR in a VR environment.

If people want to watch movies using google cardboard or gear vr, whatever, those devices have their niche, i am talking about PC VR, the second generation devices are about to hit, of course the 1st generation devices are going to be overlooked, they are cumbersome and not particularly affordable, if VR is to be successful, this was always going to happen, technology does not stand still, if Occulus or HTC want to keep their hand in the game, then they need to have their own 2nd generation devices at the very least.
where is a link that shows how many headsets OCULUS has sold.
that is what we need, please put the quote that contains the number in this reply. thanks

so its a little to early to state as a fact that HTC is selling more. 'a appears that' is acceptable but its not known

never the less fair enough you are talking about 'catching up' to devices that are 1. not for sale yet. 2. hardware specs completely unknown. 3. quality completely unknown. 4. retail distrubution plans completely unknown.
yeah/....that dont work for me
best I can tell devices like Googles new headset rumored and MS device is that they are a cheaper version of existing tech. not next gen

Nothing you can post can really detract from that, or the current estimates that I posted. Please give solid evidence that the RIFT outsold the Vive.
ok well that doesnt work for evidence for me nor does your secondary claim of a fact that its because they are failing.
I am putting you back on ignore as someone who regularly makes outrageous claims as facts without any evidence to back it up.
later.
I would be intrested in a day where you have strong evidence to support an assertion you make, as it stands that almost never happens

Show me something that is based on facts otherwise.
