I often think about how I’d love to play SWTOR – only re-imagined with the new landscape of MMOs in mind. But things like action combat or even a smaller set of active abilities probably aren’t going to ever happen for SWTOR, so where does that leave things for the future of Star Wars and online games?

Is the F2P model....Sucks a lot....
Too much restrictions, even you´re prefreed.....
I'd love to see something like this, where professions are actually meaningful and that's just "what you do" instead of everyone being "the only hope". However, I think that it's more realistic that we'll see something like what is being described. Remember that EA owns the Star Wars IP for video games exclusively, so you know it'll have mass appeal. So I think that any hope of something appealing to a niche audience is out of the question. That is unless they get something thrown in their laps which is a couple million bucks to do and already has some hype behind it.
Until then, swgemu seems like the best bet.

As for its f2p model you can play the entire original game for free? To expect more is absurd.

I would like to see a game with ESO character combat, SWG planets, and really compelling scripted content that is not centered around being the savior of the universe.
Force powers are the ultimate crap-up for any SW game, so something like the Werewolf setup from ESO would work well imo. I would run many of the big force powers on ling timers, resources, and a currency system for use. Even busting out the lightsaber would be something not done just for shits and giggles.
I think some sort of Assassin's Creed version of a Star Wars game is all we are likely to see. Biggest IP means too many interpretations I guess, so rather than being a sure thing, it becomes a near miss for most people in whatever form it takes.
If you put players as the pinnacle of importance in the world, and then have the world completely separated from those characters it is essentially a null equation. Guess what: you saved the universe, then you woke up from your instance and trundled along on the station with everyone else who had that dream too.
That was the biggest mistake they made in SWTOR, no one is anything because everyone is THE Hero. In the absence of anything else to do it just makes for a weak MMO.
Shooter MMO like the Division? Please God NO!
I play the non-force classes quite a bit, one of my mains is a Mercenary. With that said, removing the options, or limiting the experience of Force users in a Star Wars game doesn't interest me. A space combat oriented Star Wars MMO could be very fun though, as GSF is incredibly fun, just sort of stale at this point.
If they were to make a star wars skin of Ultima Online I'd play that over SWTOR any day.

Heck, the node and castle wars would be cool for PvPers too. xD

I'll be the one to admit that SWTOR is a fine game for what it is. As contradicting it may seem I'm not going to say that it's an awful game just because I'm critical of the game.

since when?
I wish people would stop trying to lump lobby based shooters, online co-op and MOBA games in with MMOs.
It like people think nowadays that any game that has online play is a MMO, even if that game is checkers. . .
as for a starwars looter shooter sure why not, just dont call it a MMO. . .
