This week Timothy Eisen takes part in history, touches on testing the big game world and tries to talk about the crafting demo Artcraft recently showed us.
Game keeps on improving and looking like something I might play. Glad for all the updates and communication they give ever Tuesday and Thursday, as well as the great customer service they provide to members. Have had my e-mails answered in a matter of minutes, when I needed to use the function.
My current hope for the "Big World" is them relaxing a bit on the whole fog of war thing. I'd like to see further out. It's their first test with this, and it's still in Pre-alpha, so I'm hopeful. This is in addition to the other things they need to refine, of course.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
Some testers are so deep in crafting that they suggested ACE to remove PvP from test servers (oh, the blasphemy!) so that they can test crafting in peace i.e. without being killed and pillaged every 5 minutes. It might sound silly at first glance, but there was lots of debate - even Crowfall's CEO jumped in.
Can't even properly test crafting. Nobody sees where this is heading?

Talking about hard core...crafters
Well that is the thing, a lot of us couldn't test anything related to crafting, we'd get enough mats to finally start putting stuff together and here comes that LOTD guild or some untagged PK guilds to take it all away.
The people who are for the PK full loot were obviously the PK guilds, the ones opposed were those not in a guild yet or those who wanted to test the crafting systems.
Half of the people who wanted the crafting were willing to compromise with keeping PK and minimal corpse looting but that wasn't good enough for the PKers. These people were camping graveyards in a pre-alpha test.
I'm certain they will learn from this. Wait until the next test and see how it goes. If they don't allow people to test it they're idiots plain and simple. Save the loot-based PvP for later tests...you know, when you're not SPECIFICALLY trying to test crafting.

OK, thanks for the "update" - I am not really taking sides in this little war, I just find it funny.
Asshat PvP griefers will always go to where they can best cause pain. Still, Crowfall has one of the better setups for choice in PvP, at least at present. If they make the exploration and crafting interesting and fun, I'm probably going to go there, even though I'm mostly a PvE player.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
These types of full loot pvp games always end the same way, with griefers and gankers alienating the playerbase until they're the only ones playing. Then the game servers come down and they wonder why, they started early this time.

Exactly this. PVPers need PVErs to make their games work. PVErs do not need PVPers. More studios need to realize this and figure out how to make it work. SWGs TEF system has potential but the FFA stuff generally never finds a way to make it work beyond segregation which I consider game ruining in most cases.
@Octagon7711@Kajidourden@Joseph_Kerr@Arglebargle@TimEisen What might make the difference is that Crowfall's tech alows rulesets from friendly fire(FFA) / full loot all the way "down" to PvP completely off if an EK monarch wishes so, including classical RvRvR or any factions system or GvG and so on.
Furthermore, they can vary extreme details such as physics or the strength of magic etc. in a given world, together with many other sliders - and they very much intend to do so, seeking the right formula (or half a dozen of "formulas" for different tastes, which is more likely to happen). Todd referred to it as "genetic design" couple times, allowing worlds to evolve and adapt (or die and be replaced) rather quickly, a luxury we didn't have in the past.
Speaking of griefers vs crafters, I guess that CF team didn't want to make testing population even smaller by separation and, besides crafting, they were also stress testing the server, then there is millions of combat bugs and glitches which require lots of people killing each other (and then writing reports i.e giving feedback) and so on.
I mean, they can't just snap their fingers and summon 1k testers everyday - these things are happening in waves, during milestones such as this one. Meantime - you can sometimes log in to test server and see 5 other guys, three of which are devs. That is likely the other side of that seemingly ridiculous decision.

what is the purpose of testing? They need to test crafting. Hope nobody is going to suggest you need to test killing crafters.

In an ideal world, they would stress test the server + test crafting, gathering, PvP, grouping etc. at once and everyone would be happy.
PS there is more details in my post above yours, we wrote these roughly at the same time so maybe you missed it - but I gave you a kind of TLDR here.
If they're going to test crafting turn off PVP. Common sense. Some people are eager to start warring and stomping etc.
This is a PVP game. If you see Crowfall and you're some frail cry baby type... avoid the game. It's called C-r-o-w-f-a-l-l ...avoid it..
How do these full time victims find these games to cry about them?
Rather a very silly statement. I spent 6 years in Felucca and have played Eve extensively in non safe areas. So I have experienced a lot of pvp. If you completely take all the controls off of pvpers, your game will fail. That is a given and the Crowfall people know that. Even UO had to add Trammel.
I also am less and less expecting this game to be anything but a week long mobs with crafting as a side thought. Just looks like Windstar crafting with different GUI with obvious output device. Slightly different but claiming SWG like skill/crafting has got to stop...just stop. If it isn't immediately visibly in-depth then the game deserves the nostalgic backlash it gets. Crowfall should peel back some skins and aim for the mobs players who want to spend weeks jingling, stop pumping the nostalgia pedal hoping to get more money.
Sheesh, original words would be welcomed as much as a review with clarity and insight.

I didn't see that it was 100% for sure a stress test. If that was the case, they should do what all those games have done in the past and have people load up into a zone/area. If what you are claiming about stress test is factual.
IF they need to test crafting, that should be done by....having players craft. I hope I am making sense on this.

What does this have to do with TESTING crafting?
Leaving PVP on during a TEST on crafting is like leaving a piece of electrical equipment plugged in while you f#%k around with the capacitors.

All you have to do is clip into the side of a tree and nobody will ever find you. I crafted for like an hour that way.
The problem is the average carebear is too daft to figure that out. Only took me 5 minutes to discover that trick.
That's what happens when you choose to make game developers solve your problems with forced game parameters rather than figure out how to survive yourself. You become soft, and dimwitted.
Either way, this episode being discussed wasn't a crafting test. It was a tech test primarily just to see if the server would even stay up. The CEO even warned people it was open pvp and was going to be a blood bath.
If they wanted to just test crafting, they could have easily disabled PvP to allow for that, afterall they put in the ruleset removing pvp against people in your same group. but they didn't, because they were not concerned with people being able to craft.
They just wanted a bunch of people on the server doing all kinds of random shit to see if the tech would handle it.

It was a stress test among other things, they mentioned it on some places including the last Q&A video. And it was somewhat messy (as expected) and they said they'll address problems with crafting.
Point being, it's not as easy as "Wanna test crafting? Just let them craft.", as I tried to explain up there.

Oh come now... there are so many places in the Big World (behind trees, rocks at map edges in the castle behind corners) that it is easy to get out of sight and craft let alone there is no log-out delays so all you have to do is find a sweet spot to craft and on top of that the combat is not insta-gib so you have like 10 seconds to log if you are attacked. It is so easy a four year old minecraft player could avoid loosing his mats. NO, there will not be any safe zone in crowfall, EVER! The whole point of this game is to give the sweet rewards of playing in a "Danger zone" every minute of every hour of every day to keep the adrenaline flowing. Test is no different, who would "test" in a boring world, certainly not a single Crow I know?
Article says "Crafting demonstrated" but gave us absolutely nothing ,except more endorsement pampering.
I am not clicking that "other"revenue generating link when it SHOULD be all tied into this ONE article, especially since the article claims crafting. So you want us to click another link to actually get to what the article claims we came here for....lame...very lame.

Well the logout thing didn't become apparent until people started using it against me. I'm sure that will be fixed, that isn't some sort of feature so I don't see how it is relevant moving forward unless for some silly reason they keep it.
I was in some obscure spots and people found me, so it is what it is. As for who would test in a boring world, well apparently a lot of people interested in crafting and not full loot PK. There is a reason this has been a very divisive topic on the Crowfall forums.
The issue is, you want as many people as you can get to stress your server yet lets say half of them don't want to spend that time being camped in a graveyard or exploiting the logout system to avoid death. People aren't going to test something they have no interest in unless they're getting paid.
Not sure where you are getting your information... oh nvm yes i do.. You are making it up.
1. The announcement for this early big World playtest CLEARLY pointed out that this test is not for faint of heart and it will not be a forgiving world. This test is NOT to test pvp mechanics or inventory dropping or anything like that. Its not really even to test crafting. Its a HARVESTING test to make sure nodes and gathering works.
2. Again, this is not a stress test of the servers! LoL.. the servers are minimal and testing is being kept quite small. The people who are playing right now have all spent 200$ or more in order to get access to test Alpha 1. I would hope that someone who throws 200 bucks at a game understands that their role in Alpha 1 is to test what the devs want tested and its not to go out and have a stable server to enjoy playing a fully functional demo.
3. There are plenty of people testing who not only are willing to do it w.out getting paid, but who are willing to pay money to do it. If you cant understand this then I feel sorry for your bank account.

I think you missed the point.
Pretty sure he didnt miss the point at all. In fact.. hes SPOT ON. your mats are being used to test crafting in another persons craft screen. If thats not fun for you, boo hoo. You knew exactly what you were signing up for when you logged in.
