No. I don't strongly dislike them but I really don't see how they keep popping up. So much better looking games out there. I'm really kind of amazed about half the answers being given. WoW, SWG, Tree of Savior, and Darkfall Unholy Wars??? Is this just a list or people's favorite games or are they actually answering the question?
Maybe it would help if people posted screenshots or videos that they feel really showcase the looks of the game.
Last time I checked the op was asking for the best looking mmos not the best graphics out there. Tree of Savior, Dofus, WoW etc all these games have their own art style and they all look amazing. You don't need the most realistic graphics to enjoy what you see. For example I wrote Dofus. Why? Is it because it has the best quality graphics around? Hell no. It is a 12 years old 2d mmorpg. I wrote it because I enjoy what I see. For me that game is a piece of art with its graphic style. Same goes for Tree of Savior. ToS has amazing looking maps, costume and mob designs. And looks like it is from a visual book. This is a very subjective matter. And for me it is not open for discussion.
EVE - This isn't even a contest. Show me another MMO in the double digits that looks remotely as good as EVE. One of the best parts about the game is that they are consistently, month by month, making graphical improvements to the game. They stay right on the tech curve.
BDO - No, I haven't played it. I don't plan on playing it; I don't care for the grindy ass game mechanics, but it's undeniably one of the better looking environments out there. I don't care for the character designs, but then again, I like my fantasy characters to look more like Conan and less like Cloud.
TESO - The aesthetics appeal to me and I think that they faithfully recreated the essence of TES in the grahpics, if not necessarily in the game mechanics.

Realism isn't everything but even so there are some non-realistic graphics that seem unquestionably better to me than others.
It has to do with the general sharpness, pixel size, and overall quality of the art. Everyone is entitled to the own opinion but well.... sometimes when you say some art is better than other art, it's a bit hard to take seriously.
Sorry if this angers you. Just my perspective on it.

No. This is Eldurian.
I get that it is people's opinion and that "Everyone has their opinion and they're entitled to it." I just have a hard time seeing how any person who's looked at the MMOs out there could ever list WoW, GW2 or Darkfall: UW in the top 3 best looking MMOs. They aren't even good examples of their own particular art style.

So you have to pick a screenshot from WoW vanilla and compare it to Crowfall to make your point vaild? I'm speechless...
How about you pick a screenshot from Legion? I don't know... Something like this.
Ok. Sure. Look a the Crowfall Screenshot and what you just linked side by side. The Crowfall one is zoomed in closer, especially to the character because the the details look good and are eye-pleasing while the WoW one is zoomed out farther hoping you won't focus on things like the lines of the muscles on the Centaur.

Yea I'm also amazed why someone would say SWG is the best looking mmo......and I'm wondering if they are just listing their favorite games when they mention stuff like SWG. I'm a devoted SWG guy but graphics not as good, their other features are significantly stronger.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.
But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.
Right. Bad graphics or just simply sub par graphics doesn't mean a bad game. I actually happened to like Darkfall Unholy Wars about as much as I liked the original (There were upsides and downsides to each.) But I still think it's a darn joke that anyone would even consider any version for a list of the best looking MMOs.
And BDO appears to have the best graphics of any MMO currently in full release in the west. Still not going to play it because it sounds like a slightly less appealing version of ArcheAge in terms of gameplay.
After playing ESO on the free weekend and gushing over how good looking that Game is, it got me thinking about what other mmos are really good looking that I have no idea about, what better way to find out than to see other people's opinions.
My Top 3 Best Looking MMOs:
GW2 ESO BDO
I thought ESO looked crap; but might just be me. It's like SWTOR goes medieval. I think it's partly because of Hero Engine; but some lends itself to poor design. Everything in the game seemed poorly scaled, blocky, buildings were just plain and uninspiring and textures weren't that good. The ship you start out on was so poorly designed I thought I was back in EQ1.
Since I played BDO, all other MMOs have garbage graphics, and even worse animations. BDO is up there with Modded Skyrim. All the other MMOS, can be played on hampster wheel computers and look like garbage.

You cherry picked a 2004 screenshot and compared it to a 2016 screenshot, congrats. This is what WoW looks like today. Right-click and open in new tab/window for full size.

Right , and i can see where some people would find that very appealing and be in there top 3 , nice clean classic Fantasy look .......Also ,makes me miss my Hunter:)
My only comment here is who cares? The vast majority of games listed by posters come up lacking. That should tell you that it really does not matter how good a game looks, it is content and well designed systems that make it fun to play for the long term.

Even that is subjective. There is no metric to dictate what a game should and should not be. In other words, who cares?

Likely some people only list the titles that they've actually played.
Might surprise you to know I've got a few friends that have played a very small handful of MMOs, and I've met a number of players in EVE (usually current or former military) for some reason who have never played any other MMORPG.

I want to give three sets of answers to this question, because I have been playing MMORPGs for 16+ years, and want to give my top 3 based on old engines in comparison to their peers (Pre-2010), modern engines for released titles (Post-2010), and unreleased MMORPGs.
Pre-2010: #1 Asheron's Call 2 - Impressive sense of scale, textures, lighting, and grass density for its time. #2 Age of Conan - Detailed models, art direction, animations, and landscapes for its time. #3 EVE Online - This engine has been vastly improved over the years, and remains the best looking space MMO that has been released.
Post-2010 (only released games) #1 Skyforge - currently the best looking (albeit with asian art-direction) MMORPG engine on the market. #2 Final Fantasy XIV - Vast landscapes and clean art design. If only the interface wasn't awful. #3 ESO - easily the best looking western MMORPG engine on the market
Unreleased #1 Star Citizen - utilizes the latest cryengine technology to provide physics based materials #2 Dark and Light - from what we have seen, this is going to be a high-fidelity engine. #3 Chronicles of Elyria - While the art direction isn't quite where it needs to be, it is running on UE4, and I have seen what that engine can do. If they can optimize it and get a good solid art direction to run at 30+ FPS, this will be a contender for years to come.
