I think what we need is a virtual world so dangerous to set foot out of town by yourself would range from foolhardy at best to catastrophic at worst.

Why would the town be safe?  You are surrounded by your fellow man.  Bad place to be.
If you want to go to that level then Mortal Online should be ideal for you. Stand still for too long and you can expect to come back to find your pockets picked.

I don't think forced grouping should be removed....Keep it !

Solo games like GW2 and all other games like it should be called something else instead of mmos.

What about games like UO, Second Life, EverJane, and Furcadia? Should they be declassified as MMOs, too?

Agreed. You could certainly make a successful MMO with no grouping or GW2 styled team ups and there is certainly room for it but we also need some MMOs where you should play together with others even in the open world unless you play really great.

Single player styled gameplay will always be better in games like Witcher 3, MMOs strength is in numbers.

I think i made one thread about this topic before .

Problem with forced group is middle contents.
Some game require you to play middle contents to get to end contents , but when everyone at end contents then no one play middle contents . So the middle contents is unplayable .

those kind of brainless forced group contents should be remove from MMO . Those are suck .
That is also a valid point. You can solve it by cutting the powerlevel down, using mega servers for mid range content and actually have things players of higher level/power needs in mid range zones though. Just cutting the group content out of the middle of the game is no good solution. You can also add a downleveling mechanics like GW2 have so vets still can't just steamroll the entire zone without breaking a sweat.

Some MMOs have no grouping until the endgame and that isn't good. Players just aren't ready then to play with others, you need to teach them group dynamics from the beginning of the game or most will just quit when they reach the endgame. You could invent some kind of solo only endgame but I fear that would be pretty boring.

What you talk about is "one way ticket" contents that cause people to solo . I call them "forced solo contents" .

Current MMORPG trend is "forced player to solo then force them to group" . I don't even understand why they chose this kind of game design for MMORPG . Totally kill the reason to group .
Then when player don't want to group anymore , they are forced to group .

i used to solo most of time in old games , but i can join group anytime i want . The contents is solo able but they don't force you to solo like nowadays design , you always have option to group .
