No, but I really haven't played one yet outside of Xyson which apparently was one of the first "survival games" before that even became a genre.

Never had much interest in games which centered around most other players being hostile and trying to take my stuff.

D and L may change my mind.

I love the premise. I am not a fan of most implementations. Id love a survival mmorpg where survival is actually difficult. No quests, just players trying to claw their way toward civilization...

I enjoyed them at first, my last long run on a survival type game was Rust from the Scorched Earth expansion. It's fun building up a neat base and taming big animals and finally awesome dragons. But then towards the end when you've gotten it all and beaten all the other top cheese players on whichever server you are on, it becomes dull to me. I swear with age I've gotten a greater case of gaming ADD and I believe I have that to blame more than the games itself at this point. Too much "Been there, done that" with most games I try now.

Theyre fun for awhile and I have a couple thousand hours in ARK but that mostly stems from rerolls and 'seasons' on RP servers where youre constantly starting over or making new characters or extending old ones stories.

On a 'vanilla' developed level none of the sand box games are any good at all. Ark, by far the most successful has maybe the worst mechanics of any game ever made. But due to private servers and toggles these stupid  shortcomings can be bypassed. The developed content of most of them are also severely lacking and if not for mod makers and basement developers most if not all of these games would be unplayable from that aspect as well.

There is only so much you can do in a basically empty world, and the community of players on each servers is paramount to hw the game experience develops, and as we all know most gamers are D bags. so these games are a recipe for failure in most cases.

But that is another catch to it all, even the worst game ever made can be fun for awhile if you have a good group of people to play with on a regular basis.

Miscreated comes to mind. total cluster but there was as hort span where a lot of people came back and played, and while there were people around and things to do the major issues it had seemed smaller, but as people realized how bland it was and left (again) it once again came back to reality.

The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

They're so repetitive and boring with almost no story. Why do people play this genre of games?
Because other people's definition of fun differs from yours. Does not make neither right or wrong.

They can be quite fun, even though most of them boil down to deathmatch arenas in multiplayer mode.

The genre is evolving slowly beyond its crude origins in DayZ. There are increasingly sophisticated offerings appearing, which entail more than just "steal everybody's stuff and break what you can't steal"... :D
Pretty much my thoughts, too. There are one or titles I find interesting (ex: Die2Nite) but for the most part they are really very barebones, half-finished attempts at games.

It's a genre that seems to have set out to one-up the blind acceptance of rampant murder and mindless genocide in MMOs, and it succeeded in its task on both fronts. It stepped up the depravity to psychological  abuse, torture, and bullying, and it doubled down on the enjoyment by raising engagement in the debauchery from the borderline detached passiveness in MMOs to - at the height of the DayZ craze - countless people watching, recording, and streaming torture porn (no, Vaross, there is no porn in that link. It's a term, bro).

Only survival game I've played that I liked was minecraft. I haven't really played a lot of them... I tried ark for a few minutes but didn't really like it. I'm undecided until I play some more.

No, mainly because I prefer permanent progression.

My kid plays Minecraft, therefore I must play Minecraft. I do not like Minecraft. However, when I must play, I prefer survival since that way I can get achievements. Although on Xbox player number 2 does not earn achievements. So I go from unhappy to very unhappy. Also it keeps assuming player 2 is always a new player and gives those annoying tips, no matter what.

    Boo survival sandbox.

    Currently Playing:

    Fallout 4 (Xbox One)

    Puzzle Pirates (PC)

Yes, but I don't like DayZ, Rust or ARK, those games just feel like death matches with a few bells and whistles tacked on. I like 7 Days to Die, The Forest and Don't Starve though. The revamped D&L might be good too, The Wild Eight is going to come out soon also which looks like it could be interesting.

Going to go with a "No"

I feel the concept has been done to death too much already, like for every new MMO there's a dozen Sandbox Survival MMO's that feel all very samey. If they put some effort into actually putting some decent combat mechanics in (most of them are just straight up copy paste and feel awful on that side) and some goals outside of "Build stuff, Build more stuff, build ridiculous gear and go PK because you're bored" they might actually be worth the time investment.

What we really need are more Hybrids, Sandbox with a underpinning Themepark, Survival but goal oriented. Something that draws in both types of players, not just appealing to the people that are now "Bored of Minecraft"

I do not like it because I think whenever you have little resources human beings are at their absolute worst. Yes you have the smattering of nice folks who might help but by and large people will cut you down and stomp on you to get what they want. Nowadays it is even worse with the deterioration of human decency in general among anonymous internet players I fear my experience in such a game will be truly apocalyptic.

I got bored of them all though. Hopefully conan exiles does a good job of fixing the survival games.

I do, but I wish they would be a bit more fleshed out and larger in scope.  Add a bit more MMO.  Even the most established ones feel a bit beta to me.

I think they have their place. I've enjoyed playing them quite a bit, but all the ones currently out have some big problems. Companies keep making more of them but the ones we have still arn't done.

DayZ, H1Z1, even ARK isn't really done yet. The games have potential but the people managing them seems to all have lost their minds.

Leveling is repetitive and boring and themeparks almost never have a good story. Why would anyone play that genre of game when there are sandboxes where you can make your own story?

Yes, the genre is great, BUT the games suck.

Games these days seem half assed. I don't like that. Mediocrity!!!

Survival games are a squandered opportunity for making great, fun and appealing games.

Most fun game: Arma 3 Sa-Matra Wasteland, though there's hardly any survival elements to this first person- /third person shooter game. Though survival and adventure is the core fun of this particular multiplayer game for up to 80'ish players. Arma is certainly bad as a game, but the gameplay can be fun when done right, though as for the fun part, that is nothing Bohemia Interactive can take the credit for though.

Building a home, watching your back cause any player could attack you anytime, thats the thrill and making new friends, building a city, protect it. Cant wait to play this in a conan enviroment, hope the pvp is balanced, not that a city made in days can be destroyed in minutes, or I hope that you can get strong offline guards.

I'm torn on the voting option so I chose no.

I like the premise, I don't like the execution of most of them.
