Lineage 2 is a follow on of Lineage which was the most popular mmog internationally for several years. Ironically it occurs before lineage in the timeline though. It is a fantasy based genre mmog that includes dark elves, light elves, humans, orcs, and dwarves. The orcs you can play are quite different from most other fantasy games as they are called "high orcs" and are pretty damn cool.
The game has a fairly long grind and it will take you a long time (much longer than other MMOG IMHO) to max out with end-game. It's long enough no one has maxed the end-game with the new subclasses, etc. If you like L2 then you won't ever need to find another MMOG since you'll never reach end-game.
A lot of people complain about L2 because of this hellacious grind. Because it's hard, there is a "need" for many players to skirt the rules by buying currency off of ebay, IGE, etc or to pay someone to powerlevel. This has led to it being one of the more farmer-infested games. If you don't know what a farmer is then it's basically someone who plays to gain wealth so they can sell it for real life money. They tend to ruin the economy because it inflates prices, but I'd argue no more than the jerks who ask double what they paid for it simply to make a profit to pay for their next grade of gear.
Example: Jo Smoe finally gets enough adena to buy sword X and uses it for a while. He then tries to sell it for twice as much as he bought it (hoping some idiot will buy [and there are idiots abound]) so he can buy sword Y which is twice as much as sword X.
That being said, this game is still good. It's hard though, so don't kid yourself. It'll take a lot of time to get anywhere in the game. It isn't a quest-hog game like WoW so you'll spend more time grinding for experiences with your friends as compared to constantly on the move to fulfill quests (go get X of that and kill Y of those...blah blah blah).
I personally like the combat system more of L2 as compared to CoH. I hated in CoH how you had to hit the attack button over and over where as in L2 it's streamlined.
The graphics in L2 are phenominal. I'd argue they are the best fantasy mmorpg graphics out right now and they are hard to beat. On the downside, it's not a kiddy game (or shouldn't be) because some of the graphics are right damn almost too graphic (dark elf butt floss anyone?)
The game has several profession changes which adds spice and variety. Unfortunately, almost everyone ends up wearing the same garb (especially those who have been playing it for a long time) which can be irritating.
I've left L2 and played a few other mmog only to return. It is the only mmog out there that I find really challenging. If you get to higher levels it means you've really achieved something (the exception being you buy an account or pay to get powerleveled). Even if you buy adena, you have a very very very long harsh road. It's a challenge and I like challenges.
If you love a challenge, like fantasy and wicked graphics, don't care for constant quests, then L2 is a good choice for you.
Id like to add that the Orcs are much more like a normal Ogre or the Lord of The Rings Urukai then the classic orcs. Its quit obvious that they are modeled after Africans with their various corn-rows and dread locks, all other races look very Korean.
As for the graphics, Im going to have to disagree with BigDawg. Ill agree that L2 has the hands down best art of any GAME never even mind a mmo, its easily on par with the best Square Soft art and much better then the FF mmorpg. However, the graphics engine its self really feels very 2 years ago, and doesnt really push my card at all. EQ2s art is inferior but the graphics blow it away, its probably a notch under guild wars and wow.
Difficulty level would be Veteran, you seriously need to be an old school mmo fan to play this game. The grind is as bad as EQ1 around launch and pre-missions Anarchy Online, you will find none of the modern WOW / EQ2 style attempts to make the grind less horrible. This is good for people like me, who hate having higher level game play infested with idiots and morons.
Lineage II is, compared with other contemporary MMO offerings, something of a throw-back and old-school in terms of MMOs. Whether you like that or not depends on what you like.
More recent MMOs like WoW and EQ2 have become very quest-oriented, on the theory that this gives some structure to the level grinding (ie, rather than simply going out and grinding mobs, you can do quest after quest after quest that require you to kill mobs and thereby disguise the grinding as questing, while also adding significant atmosphere and story-line elements). It appears that most people in the west like questing games rather than pure grinding games. Lineage II is more of a grinding game: there are a few quests here and there, but in reality much of levelling is simply going out and grinding through areas of mobs, progressing from area to area as you level and advance enough to handle the mobs in the next area. The positive side of that is that you have almost complete freedom as to what to do, and you don't have the feeling you are being led around at all ... the downside is that it is a LOT of grinding ... the level progression gets rather slow and it will take you a LONG time to grind levels.
Lineage II is also an open PvP game -- that is, every server is open PvP. There are consequences to killing someone who has not attacked you (you turn red, meaning another player can attack you and kill you without penalty), but there are still plenty of player killers around because the game mechanic allows that. The open PvP element also allows the loot farmers to cordon off areas of the game so they can farm them as well.
The poster above noted the financial situation. Basically only one race can craft items (dwarves). The prices for items in terms of the in-game currency (Adena) are rather staggeringly high given the amount of Adena dropped by mobs and the value of reselling other things dropped by mobs. In addition, because of the level grinding aspect, Lineage II is very much a game where you have to keep your gear levelled as well in order to be most effective at your grinding ... so you don't have that much money, but you have a big need for it to buy better armor and weapons. Soooo... the result of that is that many players opt for the IGE market to get Adena, which has resulted in even higher prices for items in the game. Lineage II is truly a game where the out-of-game currency market has had a huge impact on the economy, probably because the items were priced way too high at NPC prices to begin with.
Lineage II is a very pretty game. The graphics are very, very nice. It may not be as graphically sophisticated as a game like EQ2, but you would never notice ... the landscapes are sharp, beautiful and realistic looking. The character models are very attractive (some people don't like them because they are largely anime based and rather sexy and erotic in the anime type of eroticism, which some people find inappropriate for a game of this type). Character customization is not great (you have 5 choices or so), and so characters end up looking alike, but they all look very attractive. Combat actions are well done as well, and overall the game has a very top-notch feel graphically and plays very smoothly. Some people find the control method annoying (movement is controlled by clicking on the ground with the mouse, you can't remap it to a WASD type control pattern, for example).
So the overall verdict depends on what you like. Lineage II offers a very steep grinding oriented game with stunning graphics and open PvP. If that sounds like fun, then you'll probably like it. It's no way near as popular or populated as WoW or even EQ2 because it seems there are very few people in the west who like this kind of game play, but on the more populated servers there are enough players around to make the game fun, if you like this approach.
