Legislation on these types of games incoming in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ...
Can't come soon enough.
What kind of legislation and what kind of games?
Maybe some kind of monthly transaction limit might be a fair way of going about things. I really don't know. The $100 a pop RNG that @maskedweasel was describing, I find very alarming.
edit: Maybe when its discovered that the money used for a transaction was stolen. The money should be returned to the place it was stolen from and the electronic items returned to the vendor. In this kind of situation its really no skin of the game companies ass.
The game takes in about a million a day. No wonder they can afford to have such lavish commercials.

What I don't understand is how this game is considered better than all the other generic kingdom builder type mobile and free games that have around for years. If anything the hype was driven by their stupid advertising campaigns.

I think singling out one business sector and arbitrarily limiting their revenue is going to be a hard sell to make. Would you want to have your income limited by some other interest group?
I'm curious what the normal practice is when stolen money is used to purchase items, or if there is a general practice.
Well its not really your everyday type of business and other types of business sectors have been hit with rules and regulations.
When real world items have been bought with stolen money and recovered, the victim can at least recover some of the funds.
Kind of different with pixel items isn't it. How many pixel items remain in the mans account? Game of War probably has no return policy in their EULA and TOS.
Money is only money who gives a fuck if its been stolen.
The Cracked article linked in the Arstechnica article was a sad, but interesting read about how the game was designed to milk money from their whales. From a gameplay perspective I can't find a single reason to even touch that game, much less drop money on it. It seems its designed from the ground up to appeal psychologically to potential addicts (?).
...But damn, I bet those commercials cost more to make than the actual game...

Is there anything in this nation that has ever been legislated against in such a way? I can't think of anything; even things far more dangerous, that have a spending ceiling placed on it. We're a capitalist nation, free trade and free markets are our bread and butter, at best you'll get an age limit to make a transaction of this sort (18-21+). Even that is doubtful though.

What if I told you, you can spend 1 million to ask Kate Upton share the bed with you instead go to jail after spent them to one-goddamn-shitty-mobile-fuckin'-game?

I sense an incoming new thread: "Game of War - Not Pay to Win"
The facts:
1. This is NOT pay to win. Most of the community have said so. The developers have said so.
2. People who say it is invariably have no idea what they think "winning is".
3. Anything you can commit to upfront to help fund the game, you may lose.
4: the list goes on ....
If this game is not pay to win then how in the heck do you spend 1 million on it and not have anything? Don't misunderstand the *win*. It really means power. You are paying for power and that is exactly what you get when you pay money into this game. Now you can lose it and that is what happened.
yes, there are f2p and p2w games, yes, those games DO have whales. usualy they are funded by one rich kid, man or woman or whatever lies between paying for his fun. some people just have too much money, and CAN spend it on whatever they want
you can't do that? good. me neither. and i don't care if they do it :P
and that... included that "culprit" for a short time.
he had his fun, who the fuck are you to tell him how to have his fun?
it's their money, let em spend it. this guy? spend other people's money, sucks to be illegal i guess. but why does it matter what he actually spend it on? you'd pay a million to sleep with a woman? now THAT is low dude.
you call yourself gamers? then why don't you get it how someone can spend money for a game.
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
Well what do you think is going to happen to him "Game Addiction Help Line" ?
It honestly wouldn't cost even $2000 to max out almost everything in that game I put only like $200 total into the game im sitting at level 22 on everything out of 25 lol.
I mean if you spend more than that really let alone over 10 grand you are playing wrong, or seriously just Pay 2 win.
I would have went with Addiction / Insanity defense ^_^ You saw a way to make money in Real Life you were just so addicted you could not help yourself. (True Fact though some people are like this.)
I saw a news article about this and it was saying that on average each player spends $500, if true thats insane.

hopefully it was some idiot spending a million that knocked up the average that high, otherwise, the game is full of idiots with more money than sense. O.o

I dont think this one read the article , just a headline commentary , which makes the premise and body of this post foolish
...And yet (almost) all we read about is how P2P games are evil, or too expensive, or not "inclusive" enough, and that having to pay a subscription fee is "stupid" or "bad"...and that the so-called "F2P" model (which often is anything but free) is the wave of the future, and "all" games should be free, and that we "deserve" AAA-quality content for zero dollars.
Sorry, but while stories like this one are admittedly at the extreme end of the spectrum, this sort of thing is exactly what the MMO community has been (apparently) screaming for. "Free" games.

Well, who cares about sense when you have THAT kind of money which you can spend big amount of it on a simple game like GoW?
Which will you choose, to be said like an idiot because you spent 500$ a week on a mobile game, or feel smarter and bitching all day in mmorpg.com because "X MMO is not like what I played in Y MMO."

I tried this game, actually spent $5 on it until I realized what a complete loser it was. The amount of money dumped into this game is ridiculous. The only way to stay afloat in this game is to dump prodigious amounts of money into it. Worse than gambling if you ask me.

There are no easy answers as I was trying to convey.
Capitalism only works when you have ethics and morality. History has shown time and time again that ethics and morality are things that you need to legislate.
These types of games effect the same areas of the brain as gambling. Gambling is regulated and so it wouldn't surprise me if these types of games get some type of regulation.
I don't play any mobile games or games that rely on a micro-transactions since the game is designed around them and those have no appeal to me.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
