Cha Ching!
When are they going to add "a hefty bank account" to the system requirements?
Maybe when it actually is?
Have you divided the money raised by the number of backers - if you have you'll find the average is not that much. Have some pledged / backed more? No idea. If they have that means some have paid less.
So why are you parroting falsehoods to bash a game in development? Has it caused you harm in some way?
Bottomline: we need all the game developers and all the games we can get. Being critical - fine; bashing though - nah.
Let's take your argument, though, that "the average is not that much"; is what they have delivered so far worth $82 to you? Forget all the promises, I mean literally what they have right now: is that worth $82?
It's worth considering, imho. I understand that backers are expecting development to continue, but the "idea" behind crowdfunding is to set realistic goals, not "well, let's see how far this goes". /2c
Its not my "argument" its simple reality - an average of $82. I hadn't bothered to work it out exactly as it was obviously under $100).
Simply reality vs. the statement "when are they going to add hefty bank account to the system requirements".
And your question "is it to much" - perfectly reasonable imo. Its not about its only x cups of coffee it is about value. Which is always personal. Which makes it hard to divorce the "delivered today" from the "promised tomorrow".
An average of $82 though?
Now if it was indeed "hefty bank account sized" sure. And if indeed it looked like a giant fraud sure - we should always be vigilant. People can check out the alpha stuff though and decide for themselves whether this is a genuine attempt to make a game.
Should people back it? Is it - as you ask - to much? Not if they can't afford to. And not if they don't understand what they are getting in to - this is development. If they do however I don't think $82 - or $35 dollars wasn't it recently? - constitutes posts about needing a "hefty bank account".
Bottomline: we need all the game developers and all the games we can get.
Quality game developers....quality games. We have enough any game developer...any game already, in case you haven't noticed.
BTW, Chris Roberts learned from the greatest "churn 'em and burn 'em" hack of all time: Richard Garriott. Buyer beware.
The industry could do without SC and SotA, IMO.
Now that I'm thinking of it, Roberts could build an actual ship funded my his blind fanboys and send himself and Garriott into space permanently.
Actually, Origin housed some of the most notable developers of all time, including Chris Roberts, Richard Garriott, John Romero (temporarily), Raph Koster, and fuckin' Warren Specter! I mean these are, literally, Industry icons and I don't think that a single company has had a line-up like that before or since. It's a literal who's who of RPGs.
Also, both SC and SotA are titles which are pushing boundaries. Please! Please, feel free to point me in the direction of a title that is attempting to do more than what SC is. This is exactly what I mean when I say that people don't want change. Everyone is always screaming that the industry needs sandboxes, or innovation, yet people shit on people who try to implement change. It's astounding!
