If you look on the Playonline Website it will kindly inform you of a quest that will unlock your own NPC buddy that parties with you, this changes everything
Solabilty= people can ... well i guess somewhat Solo on there own accord, just pointlessly slay Toughs or Even matchs as a PT of 2 level shouldn't be a real issue
Lack of Certain Job= Depending on how this works you may be able to choose your own little guy and what class he is, that would 100% awsome and you know it, you could say "Theres no WHM's" and someone could say OH my little NPC is close enough for us to use ^^
Farming/Skilling up= To weak to fight and farm apporiatly? well with your npc buddy you should be A-Ok but not only that you don't have to lot for drops ^^
If SE actually put Decent AI in these NPC's we may just have a whole new ballgame people ^^

I said this in another thread, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much for soloing.
Think about it. The onlly way to get any XP worthy of the effort is to fight mobs that are at least even matched or higher... and even then it's questionable. Beyond the earliest levels, say, 13, a decent challenge or higher is going to give you trouble and lousy xp. The only way you're going to fight the mobs you'd need to make it worth the time is in a party of at least 5 members because SE felt it wise to make it where even Easy Prey mobs can knock half your HP out in a solo fight as you start getting higher in levels.
I think people who feel that now there's this whole solo game open to them are in for a disappointment. I'm sure it's going to add some kind of new dynamic to the game, but I really don't believe it's going to be the solo game - unless they're adjusting mob difficulty and xp accordingly; which I doubt also. So many people feel partying is shoved down their throat too much, and it's hard enough to find a good, capable group of people to XP with, that many wouldn't bother with grouping anymore and would just take their henchmen out to solo grind. With FFXI being so focused on grouping, SE isn't going to let that happen.
Plus I wouldn't be surprised if the fellowship quest is one of the more obnoxious in the game to complete.

From rumors I've heard, the level cap for the quest is 40.
