I tried to steer people away from this title on Steam and got rushed by a swarm of white knights, likely resulting in many people wasting their time and maybe still money.

This is why being a mindless fanboi is bad. See No Man's Sky.

I honestly don't know how Shroud of the Avatar is still standing but my next guess for the chopping block is Shards

Really unfortunate. The tech was partially what I thought would be added to Landmark (EQNext). Maybe they will provide it as a programming toolset. I think the key to exciting new MMOs will stand upon some amount of procedural generation.

I think it is pretty pathetic when people praise the idea of others losing their jobs just because they had a vision that did not pan out. I feel bad for everyone who worked for the company and wish them the best. The game had some interesting ideas.

I don't. Anytime you take a job it's your responsibility to know what you're getting yourself into. If you choose to work in a field that's risky in terms of success (game development is one of them due to market saturation), you have to learn to deal with failures if the idea doesn't pan out.

If you cant handle the heat, go work in a more stable industry.

You honestly can't tell the difference between the two?

Incidentally, it was also bad that the promotional material was 2D sprites and the gameplay turned out to be fairly ugly 3D models.

    Just like Mighty No. 9

They could have taken a note from games like Tree of Savior and the most recent Guilty Gear and shaded 3D models to appear two dimensional.

I'm not one of those pro/anti Smedley people. I have no reason to be pro Smedley nor do I have any reason to be anti Smedley.

People believed in the game for whatever their reasons, it's not going to be made and they get their money back. No damage done other than some disappointment.

First game of a new studio and they list permadeath as a main feature. Saw this failing from the word go. Such a small market want that type of game.

So it's not the fact that it lacked almost all of its promised features and that permadeath feature was in fact an easy obstacle to get past (I played the game) <snip>
I agree its "not the fact that it lacked features" - in its current state. Much simpler: no money = no features.

Maybe people didn't like the proposed features.
Maybe the game just failed to stand out.
Maybe other games launched and just drowned it: gobbling up website column inches, peoples money and time, etc. (Analogy: look at the number of major films that failed to perform in 2016 because of the likes of Tarzan and Finding Dorey.)

So no money which suggested to the backers that there was insufficient interest and it would struggle even if they released all the promised features. Which would have taken more work so in that sense crowd funding worked as designed.

To reiterate though:kudos to PixelMagic / JS for saying they will refund backers.

Is John Smedley going to blame Lizard Squad for this debacle too? You can go ahead and retire now sir.

The fact he tried to sell this pile of junk says he should retire.
I truly believe that H1Z1 LUCK ruined his mind for good,he really was believing that he could sell anything.I don't care about numbers or what anyone says H1Z1 was also crap, released for $25 as a completely unfinished one map content less game.

What really bothered me was not the obvious, that Smedley cannot deliver but the fact some were still willing to back him and support this game, tons of blind people walking around i guess.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

The game looked pretty decent, but with Smedly on board it had no chance.

Surprisingly my refund went through within 10min. I suggest you get it quick before the $$ dries up, those devs weren't getting paid with peanuts.

Its always sad when mmo not trying to be "just like wow but better #35654568" fails to be born.

Its silly how publishers are still throwing money on wow clones when players are starving for something new.

I know people who were gonna wait til the game launched to buy it because of the whole "getting a finished product" thing. Kind of dumb if he expected big sales on an EA release, many people aren't buying into those anymore.

More likely his dreams were bigger than his wallet and/or beyond the skillset of a prehistoric dev team.

Wait, what? First you get all whiney and negative about getting promised a refund, and then, when you actually get it (lightning fast I might add) there is not a shred of thankfulness, but just more whining and negativity. They didn't have to give you a refund, you are aware of this, right?

I don't get why you bought the game in the first place, judging by your posts here you don't like it, or its developers at all. With consumers like you Smed really doesn't need any enemies. The Smed hate is getting old, like hair metal....

I got my refund in an hour and felt sad, people failing and good ideas not coming to fruitation are not a positive thing.

Nah, we are called the 'not bitter people.'  We live in the now, not in the past... You know, that time where FF11 is just a distant memory that didn't leave any lasting inpact on the MMORPG scene at all <3

A game I financially supported ends up being a complete ripoff and total garbage but I force myself to test it for 20+ hours anyways only for the entire company to crash and burn. But yeah I should be thankful you're right.

Don't go full white knight on us yet, they still have thousands of refunds to deliver.

Wow, it's a tough crowd around these parts.

The outcome is what it is, and I'm sure a lot of things could have been done differently. However, I wouldn't wish a game closure on anyone. I'm sure a lot of people's hopes and livelihoods were riding on this. Convalesce, learn from what went wrong, and do it better the next time.

    Current game: Pillars of Eternity

Played: UO, AC, Eve, Fallen Earth, Aion, GW, GW2

    Tried: WOW, Rift, SWTOR, ESO

    Future: Camelot Unchained?  Crowfall?  Bless?

Hmm lets see, it is not so much white knighting from my side but more bad mouthing from yours. The full refund outcome is indeed unclear still but signs are postive when there are people getting their money back and pretty fast as well. Yet you decide to stay firmly negative, that is an attitude, not some objective stance.

Also, lol at the rest. Nobody forced you to buy, nobody forced you to play. And really, nobody owed you a dime in return, so yes, them giving refunds is something to be grateful for, most would have given you nothing. A rip off and total garbage is of course 100% your opinion, but calling an EA game a rip off seems kind of ironic since you are buying an incomplete product to begin with. Maybe EA games are not for you.

But hey, opinions and such, we all have em.
