The Bad Thing About RV

What is everyone's version of being "the best" in RV? Is it having the biggest house, the coolest rug, or a cool suit of armor?

Here's mine: Having the skills to play this game. This includes both character and player skills. One thing you guys don't seem to understand is that this game revolves around Skills, not items. If you stab someone with a flimsy sword they die just as well as with the best sword available in game. Even then, the best is not the best because players have to be able to use it and "the best" is simply an opinion.

By being able to buy things you are not getting any better. I understand your concerns about someone playing 5 minutes a day and already having a farm. You know what? I don't really care. They will be a crappy farmer because they have no skills.

In short: If you really hate the idea of people paying RL money to get "uber" non-existant stuff, then work your ass off and get better than them.

Edit: Notice the quotes! There is no such thing as the best sword in RV. There are no uber items.

Yup Traken. I have tried to make this point a few times now, plus the fact if you die, you lose all that hard bought gear anyways. But the concept of no uber items is constantly ignored in favour of "knowing what the Devs will and are doing, because... I know.. somehow...".

Each to their own. I can't wait =D

I understand there are no uber items.. but aren't legions and such paid for by money?  So wouldn't someone who pumps in a lot of RL money be able to have a legion many more times the size than someone who doesn't want to pay as much as him?

I liked the idea of other people where they put a cap on how much you can 'donate' per month.  Like 15 bucks.

There is one almighty downside to this. As far as I know, you don't buy a slave or a soldier. You pay wages. So I outlay $15 for money at the very start, buy a Legion and Barracks, whatever. I then realise I have only effectively payed a week/month rent and wages. [Edit: One real world hour equals like 6 hours in-game or such I think. So by a week/months wages, I do not mean you can pay $15 every month real time.]
I now need upkeep. And if there is the limit on how much you can spend (which there very likely seems there is), you're going to have to get off your ass and work VERY, VERY hard to keep everything you've just bought. More than likely you won't be able to keep it.
Least that's the way I see the system working.
[Edit 2: Oh, as well as rent and wages etc, everything degrades. Weapons, armour, tools, housing even maybe? So you are constantly paying upkeep. So if you have a crapload of nice stuff, you'll be paying a crapload to keep it upkept! =D]

Ok, here's a great write-up by a fella on the official forums:

Page 10, author is Caoimhan. Should be the last major posts. I highly recommend anyone who is actually interested in the game to read these passages by him. They make a LOT of sense how this system can and should work.

Very interesting read there Arremus, thanks for posting it.  Sounds like it could work.  Might be a little complex to see work inside a game though.  Will just have to see how it works in-game i guess.

Just added Edit 2 to my post, detailing that everything degrades too, so that's another cost to have to factor in.

And yup, you're totally right. It's ambitious and bold. It might work, it might not. I can't wait to see =D

This could promote roleplaying.  Spoiled brats playing Romans, and barbarians raiding and burning their houses down.   image

hmm, I wouldn't call the leigon a bunch of spoiled brats in their face. ::::15:: in all fairness they do start out as slaves though, and the barbs as free men. They earn their freedom.

There is a limit on how much you can buy per probably month maybe weeks or something else.  The point is, if you buy a fighting group(legion/warband) they will be majority NPC's that probably won't be as good as most players.  Also, they don't come back after they die and players can.  The bigger the fighting group the more money it will take to manage it(food/water/equipment/new ones to replace the dead).  The player would have to keep putting in more and more money unless they invest in crafting as well.  With the limit I am assuming is probably about 25,000 in-game currency per month I am assuming is the limit(or around there).  To hire a legion(6k soldiers) first would be finding the 6k NPC's and second would be finding equipment for them which would be hard in the begining since no one would be able to make very durable stuff yet.  Let's assume the player buys the equipment as quickly as he can and it takes him 3 weeks buying all available equipment.  Now he marches north(assuming he was in Rome) to the barbarian lands.  He levels a town but, now all the barbarians realize there is a legion and hurry to be the first people to defeat a legion.  Now his legion suffers attacks 24 hours a day until they are all beaten by hundreds if not thousands of barbarians(not all at the same time).  Now he goes back to Rome and whines about losing his whole legion and says the game is gay.  He asks the devs for his money back and they say it was a donation not a purchase of in-game currency.  He quits the game to go back and play (insert crappy MMORPG).

Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open.

ya exactly, this game sounds appealing to people who do not have a lot of time as those hardcore gamers.  i really like mmorpg but i dont have 15 hours/day to play mmorpg.

I don't think being 4 hours into the game and being able to raise a legion all by yourself is very likely, more likely will be that you need a guild to raise and support a legion.  The guild will need all the infrastructure that goes with it to support the legion i.e. merchants, craftsmen etc not to mention Centurions, Legates etc to command the men.  I would think that running a legion and staking a claim on the world will require lots of planning and effort and will be beyond the means of most individuals.

As for paying for in game money, you pay for most other MMORPG's anyway, some of them twice like EQ2.

I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
