I like it. I like it as much as I did EQ when they launched FV. BDO is for real.

Black Desert has been fun at every level for me and my friends. FUN.

It has an expansive world with day/night, weather storms, hot and cold, as well as seasons. The world looks next gen, player models are fantastic, and the ability to climb and jump eliminates the 'hop' up on anything limits of most engines. They do all they can to keep the market clean and free from gold farmer. The spam filters keep the channels clear and the trade systems make bots pointless. They have an actual service staff, I have logged a number of tickets and received actual help from a GM in game as well as email exchanges on my issues.

That said.. the best part is the combat system. The combos and skills system let you develop a fighting style for you on that class. It will be totally different on another class, but there is no wrong answer. How you want to play is always the right way in BDO.

Its the best looking game out there right now. The skills, crafting, housing, banking, and combat have drawn me in like EQ did back in the day. I have played pretty much every major title since then, and this one is the first to give me that 'hit' I have been looking for.

BUT BDO is not for the super casual. You need to work at the quests, and they dont put handles on it. It takes some effort to craft, or use skills. End game, is really just when you finally have figured out the contribution, skills, energy, and black stone systems.  This game is hard at times.

If you are looking for a game or gave this half a try. I suggest you go in with a generous mind and just let yourself experience it. They have lots planned!

PS
The black spirit is meant to be that hokey. Its a trope of all the bad story guides in MMOs. You are meant to dislike it.

It is a pretty unique MMO with its highs and lows.
Not perfect by any means, but quite fun.
Everyone should  give it a try as it has a 7 day free trial.

Ok everything else is opinion more or less so I'm going to address this.
The story in BDO is actually really good, I don't know why you think he's supposed to be a 'bad story guide'.
Also, the button on a KR keyboard is 2 buttons away from the map key, it does not cause them any problems.  Wanna know how I know this?  Hit F1 in game and look at the key help.  It isn't supposed to be annoying. You aren't supposed to dislike it.

Spoilers (not really) :  He's actually a really cool character if you pay attention to him.

Really? I genuinely like it. It's actually creepy. This horrid thing that keeps telling you it's your friend, your guide, but then acts very controlling. It keeps saying you have no memory but doesn't really offer anything to help you.

If I had to sum up the story of the black spirit without spoiling anything major I'd say from the get go he tells you that you traded your memories to bond yourself with him, and he pretty openly manipulates you to try to have you gain more power.  Many of the people you meet warn of the history of the Black Energy, and how it possessed people in the past and the possession itself killed them.

Near the end of the Media story you start to learn the truth of what he is, and in Valencia you can start to guess at the truth of the matter.

Once you get your awakening weapon, well that's because you have regained a portion of your memories...

    But lookit those teeth!

Honestly, I've been playing since launch, and am still having fun. Just got my first awakened char even lol. Hubby started playing this past week and he's having fun too. We're sandbox people, and I can see how people can get lost and feel like there's nothing to do. However, it's just not true. The life skills alone can take up all your playing time and afk time as well. Relax, and do what you feel like.

One of those games, either you like it or you don't. I really wanted to like it, I even tried to like it twice, once at open beta weekend and again for a free week. However hard I look I can't find that sandbox part of the game that you are talking about, all I see is a themepark game that wants me to do chores and takes away my freedom. Summon scrolls for bosses, it does not get more themepark and less open world than that, and although there are some interesting things such as building up "faction" before some npc will talk to you, it just does not cut it. Then again that combat system is just boring to me, its not that I don't get it and can do some fancy combos, it just still boring (for me).
Anyways, enjoy it and I am sure it is just because I haven't digged deep enough yet.

It may not be, it's not for everyone. That's why we have choices.

    I like it too :)

I've played almost every major title, and... this is my favourite right now, and original poster is right: combat in this game is the best bar none of any mmo out right now.

I used to play wow (from tbc to legion) but I'm spoiled with this game right now, don't feel like i can bare tab targetting + slow "xy second to do n" combat anymore.

Also, I'm loving the life skills + being a crafter in this game.

all in all 7.5/10, highest i've rated any mmo in a while... I actually care about the world and doing stuff other than combat, which then just makes combat that much more meaningful when i do do it :D

The differnce between a BDO ninja and a WOW rogue is light years... just the timing of abilities for instance, in wow you have a 2 minute evasion skill to "dodge" things, you press it, get 100% evasion, lasts 10 seconds then fades. top rank pvpers say "I'm gonna die now" when they've used their cooldowns. In Bdo, no such thing, ok, there are grapples and stuns e.t.c, but it is based second by second!

You ACTIVELY evade, and yes there's a few cooldowns, but you are always doing something! It's so engaging.

Thanks pearl abyss for making a great game, looking forward to the "second awakening" where each class gets its own primary weapon upgraded: source: http://dulfy.net/2017/01/21/black-desert-devs-talks-about-second-awakening-and-console/ and that site is a good resource for new BDO players too.

Edit: the ONE thing i would change is to make some kind of guild / friend based economy, instead of having trading locked to the marketplace (to shutdown botters/ gold sellers).
Actually helping one another and grouping up together kind of makes an mmo an mmo.
you still group up, you just... help one another in less ways, ways that cannot be exploited, this was done to avoid the plague of botters/ chinese gold farmers which come to popular mmos, like wow e.t.c, and only have real players doing real things

I agree with that. I have a ton of good horses and gear I could supply to my husband, who just started. I understand why they did it, and appreciate the lack of spam, but if there was something like a partnership that took a long time to set up and cancel, so we could help out people we're close with, I'd be a lot happier.

BDO is an economy sim with some Korean grinder mixed in.  I don't even see it as an mmo.

I could just never get in to the game, it really did feel like an economy SIM, more so than even Eve online. Leveling was fast. Too many items. The game kinda wore me out.... it also did not feel very sandboxy to me (However this is just my opinion)

Are you going to elaborate on what these supposed fundamental flaws are or leave it vague so no discussion can be had.

I also find it amusing that "people don't mention BDO", while it's discussed here every day. LOL.
