BDO: New Player Basic Guide

edited January 2017 in Black Desert Online
Ok folks since I am playing the shit out of this game, and the game can be rather confusing for new players I decided to make a Basic Guide to get noobs started.
Please let's not turn this thread into "BDO is crap" please, I know this game is more controversial than Trump, this thread is not about that.
If any of you have questions about BDO you can ask, I'll try to answer as many questions as I can.

TOP TIPS:

1) Buy a Pet, it will help with the looting. With 3 Pets you don't have to worry looting ever again, they will do that for you, 4 it's even better.
This is the only Items you kinda have to buy from the Cash Shop, but you can get them in the Market Place if you are lucky enough.
2) Get your Luck to 5
as soon as you can (Titles, Crystals, Lucky Pants), as Luck is important in this game both for better Loot, Fishing and Item Enhancing.
3) Set Graphics to Minimum
when you fight Bosses or take part in Node Wars, Lag can be overwhelming.

First off let's start with some useful Links:

http://www.blackdesertfoundry.com/ - Tons of useful guides, leveling spots, and lists of almost everything you'll need.
http://www.blackdesertfoundry.com/map/#5/-15.242/-50.845 - Interactive Map of Nodes and Resources.
http://www.somethinglovely.net/bdo/horses/ - Horse breeding calculator. A must if you don't want to be at the mercy of the RNGod.
http://dulfy.net/category/bdo/  - One of the best sites for News and Guides on BDO
http://bdo.mmo-fashion.com/  - A place where you can check the appearance of all the Costumes and Armors available in BDO

1] CHOOSE YOUR CLASS

Available Classes:
  • Warrior [Melee]: Good overall in PvP and PvE, harder to level than most, but when you get the Awakening Weapon at 56 it's a faceroll.
  • Valkirye [Melee]: Female version of Warrior but with some Self Heal abilities.
  • Musa [Melee]: Probably the most enjoyable Melee Class to play, excellent DPS at any stage.
  • Maehwa [Melee]: Female version of Musa
  • Ninja [Melee]: One of the best DPS provided you have good gear. It's a glass cannon though, spam Evade is a must.
  • Kunoichi [Melee]: Female version of Ninja
  • Wizard [Range]: Excellent all rounder both in PvE and PvP
  • Witch [Range]: Female version of Wizard
  • Ranger [Ranger/Melee]: Probably the easiest and most overpowered Class in BDO both PvP and PvE. Though be aware, the Awakening Weapon of the Ranger is a Sword so you might have to switch from Range to Melee later on.
  • Tamer [Hybrid]: It's a Pet Class this is a controversial Class, some seems to love it, some just think they are useless.
  • Berseker [Melee]: Like the Tamer is a Controversial Class, recently with the Awakening they seem to be getting more popular
  • Sorceress [Hybrid]: PvP Goddess
You can now choose your Family Name (Last Name) which is shared throughout all your characters and your character name (First Name).

2] GETTING STARTED

  • CHOOSE YOUR CHANNEL:
Channels in BDO are basically cluster servers, you can easily switch from one to another by clicking on the Channel name on top of your mini-map.
When you choose your Channel you should go with any Olivia Channel first which grants you 100% extra XP for the first 30 Days.
So don't get freaked out by the fast pace you level, as it's only a one off so take advantage of it, because from 50+ it gets much slower and after 56 leveling goes at a snail pace, so try to get at least one character at 56 within the first month (depending from your style you might be able to to level more characters by just grinding mobs)

  • SET UP THE UI AND KEY BINDING:
There is a shit ton of information displayed on your screen and your chat window when you first log in.
You can turn off almost anything (Options > Game) including War and Marketplace notifications, the navigation trail, and most of the UI. I also suggest you turn off Market Place notifications in the Chat Window as it gets seriously spammy.
BDO is a twitch action combat type so it is important you remap your Keys to suit your style, using a MMO Mouse like the G600 or the Naga it is a huge Plus.

  • THE TUTORIAL:
This is one of the worst features of BDO it almost completely put me off, so try to finish the Tutorial as you can't skip it.
Your screen get flooded with lots of pop up windows and the Black Spirit is constantly on your back, if you don't finish his quests he will keep bothering you.
The most annoying part is when he ask you to perform Combo moves, which can be quite difficult to pull, but don't worry you won't need to use most of the Combo moves to be successful in BDO, just do it for the sake of the Quest.
You will know the Tutorial is finished when you complete the Quests inside the Ancient Stone Chamber.
You HAVE to complete this quest or you won't be able to use the Black Spirit functions like Enhancing and Transfusion, which are essential for gear progression and upgrading.

  • IMPORTANT FEATURES:
There are some terms and features you need to be aware of in BDO, they are displayed on the top left side of your screen:
Contribution Points (CP): You can get them mainly through quests (any), these are important for Craftig but also you need them to connect Nodes in the map.
Energy Points: Those recharge slowly as long as you are online (they recharge faster if you sleep in bed), very slow if you are offline. Before they were used for almost anything, think of Archeage Labor Points, but nowadays they are only used for Gathering and Knowledge (Amity), to hire new Workers and to buy from the Black Market.
Contribution points are shared through all your character (Family), while Energy points are character bound (though the Max pool is shared).

    3] PLAYING THE GAME PT/1

    • GEAR
The Gear System in BDO is rather atypical, similar to Archeage.
You cannot loot the best armor in-game, you basically have to craft it (or upgrade it), but the good thing is that provided you have the budget you can wear the best Gear in game from lvl 1 (you can twink your Alt like a God).
So what I suggest is to aim straight away to the best gear available as soon as you have the money, don't waste money on other gear you will have to throw away once you get at higher level.
NOTE: All Gear should at least be +15 with the exception of Accessories which is PRI for Blue items and TRI for Green Items (they are cheap).
This is a set up which is good from lvl 1 to lvl 53-54 (You can stretch it to 56 if you enhance your gear high enough, at lest DUO level), then you will have to upgrade to Boss Armor and Weapons and get your Awakening Weapon:

      - ARMOR = Full Grunil set (4 pieces). Truthfully there are better combinations that suit better the different Classes but Grunil is generally good for every class, and I want it to keep it simple.
      - WEAPONS = Buy a Yuria as your main Weapon, alternatively Rosar, both are fine for every Class though they might be slightly better choices for different Classes, but as for the Armor I want to keep it simple
For Off Hand though every Class is different, while at 56 you will receive the Awakening Weapon upon completing the Black Spirit Quest.
      - ACCESSORIES = Wear whatever you can loot which has Attack Power (AP) and Accuracy (Acc) or buy cheap ones at the AH until you have enough money to buy Mark of Shadow (Rings), Witch Earring (Ears), Ogre Ring (Necklace), Basilisk's Belt (Waist).

    • UPGRADING YOUR GEAR
I strongly recommend that you sell all your loot and save money to buy the Gear already upgraded at the Market Place, it's cheaper and it saves you a mental breakdown.
But if you like to craft, or you are a masochist, here how it goes:
So you buy the Base Gear, but the hardest part is to Enhance it as its Stats will increase with each level.
You can enhance Gear up to 20 levels from +0 (basic) to +15 then from +15 to PRI > DUO > TRI > TET  > PEN (lvl 20).
So that's 20 levels in total.
Accessories though have only 5 levels from PRI to PEN, and remember that when you try to Upgrade Accessories and you fail, you lose them (unlike Armor and Weapons)
So what you do is get a Basic piece of gear and enhance it with Black Stones (Armor or Weapon) you need one for each try but it is highly unlikely that you succeed every time, in fact the higher your Gear is the higher chance of failure you get.
You can easily fail 25 times in a row and for very high items even 40-50 (I heard even 80 in some cases but we are talking about lvl 18-19 gear).
Every time you fail you accumulate  Fail Stacks (FS) the more FS you have the easier is to succeed at the next try, so save FS for the best items don't waste it on Green crap.
25 FS is the soft cap after which you will have no more benefit from getting higher Fail Stacks.
Upgrading Gear is a very tedious and unrewarding business so as I suggested already, buy the gear from the AH if you can and spare yourself a big headache.

    • IMPORTANT STATS
The most important Stats in BDO Gear to look for are in this order: Attack Power (AP) - Accuracy (Acc) - Criticals (Crits). Crits are no needed by the Warrior as he is already capped so you can focus on AP and Acc.
    • QUEST AND LEVELING:
Once you finish the Tutorial you can basically do what you like, you don't have to do quests if you don't want to as most of them don't give any XP (But they grant you Contribution Points), except for the Black Spirit ones which will give you nice perks like extra expansion slots for your inventory and later on lots of Silver and Gear.
Otherwise you can just level by grinding mobs which is the easy and most efficient way to level.
There are 3 kind of Quests:
-Combat Quests: They reward mainly CP, Skill and Energy Points (very little combat XP)
-Life Quests (Tradeskills): They reward Energy Points, good Tradeskill XP and Tradeskill Knowledge (important if you want to craft)
-Black Spirit Quest: You should do all of them as they usually reward well (CP, Upgrade Stones, Silver and Gear, Inventory Expansion Slots), particularly at later stages.

    3] PLAYING THE GAME PT/2

    • PVE - WORLD BOSSES AND BOSS SCROLLS:
PvE is the weakest link of BDO, it basically consist in killing World Bosses (Which Drop BIS Boss Gear) these are basically Raids, while on a Group level you can do Boss Scrolls which are awarded by quest on a Daily or Weekly basis. You basically summon a Boss with the Scroll and you beat the crap out of it, there is a small chance they might drop BIS Gear (really tiny).
That's it. So if you are looking for traditional Dungeons or Raids, BDO is the wrong game for you.

    • PVP
Forced PvP starts at level 50, it's Open World PvP and you can be attacked anywhere except in Settlements.
Before level 50 you cannot be attacked, but you can still engage in consensual PvP if you wish so.
I have to say that although this is an Open World PvP game, PvP it is not so common.
PvP game-play consist mainly of Node Wars and PvE spot skirmishes.
In fact popular PvE spots is where you will most likely encounter PvP as people are protective of their grinding spot.
But if you are not a PvP guy don't worry, there are lots of places you can grind mobs and if you really want to grind in that area which is "taken", you can easily change channel.

    • CRAFTING AND TRADESKILLS
Crafting in BDO is a mix of Manual and Automated tasks.
You can gather Mats yourself but generally it is more efficient to hire Workers to do the job for you, the only Materials you should gather yourself are herbs and plants used for Alchemy, and Red Meat used in Cooking.
Processing Mats is usually fully Manual, while Crafting is generally Automated, you let your Workers craft.
You can hire a Worker in every big city, hiring a Worker requires Energy, don't hire White Workers, try new ones until you find a Green or better a Blue one.
Once you hire a worker in order to do its tasks he needs Beer, which you can buy from the AH or brew it (cooking) yourself, this is better as brewing Beer is the most efficient way to level Cooking.
There are 3 kinds of Workers: Goblins (used in Crafting), Ogres (used in Farming/Gathering) and Humans which are versatile (also they have high luck so use these if you are going for a Bank investment or for Nodes with Rare Mats).
Before you can use a Worker you need to invest in a Node which produces the Material you want to gather.
In order to invest in Nodes you have to speak with the Node Manager and use Contribution Points, you then can assign a Worker to that Node (remember you need to re supply workers with beer to keep them working).
Apart from Cooking and Alchemy every other Crafting is automated.
In order to craft with your Workers, you first need to buy the appropriate Workshop by opening your Map and clicking on the City icon, you will then see all the available buildings with all different Workshops, again you need to invest CPs if you want to use them.
There are another couple of things you can do by clicking on the City icon within your Map, one is you can buy an Apartment (only one per City) which is also the only building you can actually access and decorate as you wish, and the other one is you can buy Storage Space, to increase the slots in your personal Warehouse.

    • HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN BDO
Lastly the most asked question in every MMO.
How do you make money in BDO?
Luckily in BDO it is not such a big secret.
There are many good ways to make money, one is grinding Mobs (second best), Trading is also good but at higher levels, you can also train and sell high level Horses, crafting though is not worth it (like in every MMO).
But the best way to make money in BDO is.....Fishing.
You actually don't do much money from the fish itself, at least not at early levels, but by catching Relics.
5 Relics gives you the chance to make a Scroll and summon an Event which rewards you with 5 to 10 Memory Fragments which are worth 750k each, so with 5 Fragments you can net easily 7.5 Millions (plus all the fish you caught).
You can fish either actively or AFK, doing it AFK is much slower and you might get 5 Relics in 6 hours if you are lucky or the same amount in 12 hours if you are unlucky (the rate gets better as you level Fishing and use better Tools).
If you Fish actively though, you get Relics much faster, some people claim to make 50 Millions a day easily.
I am not an avid fisher myself, but I  still can make around 10 Millions daily just  AFK Fishing (I do make more money in some other ways but that's my secret).

So there you go, I hope this Guide helps New Players who dares to try BDO disregarding its many detractors.
If you think I said something incorrect or you feel I missed something let me know.

I will be also happy to answer any questions.

Just a few small initial observations from skimming the guide. I'll read the rest more in depth later on.

Warrior and Valk play fairly differently from each other. Valkyries have a self heal, and an AoE group heal that warriors don't get for one thing. Life was much easier for them pre-awakening for those reasons.

Also, Ranger's awakening weapon is a sword (one handed), the dagger is the offhand they've had since level one.

But good work so far! :star:

Thanks. as I play Warrior, Musa and Ninja, some of the info about other Classes might not be entirely correct.
    I will update.

By the way, if someone has good knowledge of a certain Class and want to chip in, that would be great.

    Nice starter guide.  ;)

    A couple questions for you.

I mostly grind and do Black Spirit quest. What are the best ways to get Skill Points?

Boss Armor you are talking about the Grunil, Yuria and Rosar?

    1) Yeah grinding and doing all Combat Quests is the best way to get Skill points, grind different type of mobs and get high knowledge.

    2) No that's the pre-BIS gear (it's a noob guide).

    Boss gear is:

    Bheg Gloves
    Red Nose Chest
    Muskan Shoes
    Giath Helmet
    Kzarka Main Hand
    Dandelion Awakening (Karanda)
    Kutum or Nouver Off Hand

That's what every Class should aim for at End Game.

Boss is farmed from the actual bosses or can it also be found on market?

The vast majority prefers Hebetate Tree Armor over Red Nose. (Which is why those gift boxes spited us so, and gave us a bunch of Red Nose armors)

It's also why Red Nose is a ton cheaper to buy on the MP. Most people don't care about the Regen bonus it gives, as that is pretty useless in PvP. The max HP and MP/WP/SP from the tree armor also increases damage and survivability, since just about every class has an important skill that does extra damage based off those stats.

Boss armor drops from scroll bosses, from world bosses, occasionally event boxes, and yes, you CAN get it on the MP. Just expect there to be a LOT of competition for it.

    1) Yes
You could buy a Liverto weapon, but it is expensive and eventually you have to upgrade it to a Kzarka.
Just upgrade or buy a  DUO Yuria, it should be enough until Kzarka.

    2) Boss gear drops from World Bosses (only Weapons), Scroll Bosses (only Armor)\, and they can be bought in the AH and the Black Market (but they are more expansive and you need to get really lucky).

Also another, less well known tip to get CP... if you do a lot of cooking and/or alchemy, you can turn some of the byproducts in for CP as well. If you cook up a large batch, and turn in all the items, you can get a lot of CP for them at the lower CP ratings (AKA before you hit the dreaded 300+ CP, and things slow down to a crawl).

There's not a returning player code, but you do get special rewards to get you up and running and access to the restricted leveling channels (olvia) for new and returning players if you haven't logged in for awhile.

As the previous poster said you get a 30 day access to the Olivia Channels which grant you 100% extra experience.

As for the Ghillie Costume the only thing they changed is the name, now it's called Treant Camouflage Costume.
Still character bound like every other costume.

You can transfer the armor and accessories to your Ninja, but the weapons will be useless. And nope, the Ghillie suit is still bound to character. There is currently an event that gives rewards to returning players.

Please let's not turn this thread into "BDO is crap" please, I know this game is more controversial than Trump, this thread is not about that.
If any of you have questions about BDO you can ask, I'll try to answer as many questions as I can.

OP-----When you start with the anti-Trump crap in your first sentences is when I knew there was nothing of value in what followed.

Ok I'll try to be nice, though I am starting to get enough of people that doesn't read or is not able to understand what is written.
I spent more time the last couple of days correcting people who can't be bothered to read properly threads than discussing the actual subject of the threads itself.

    But I'll try again.
Where do I say that I am Anti-Trump? How do you know?
Do you know what "controversial" mean applied to a person or a situation?
I guess you don't, in which case you should Google it, as I am not going to do that for you.
Then come back and let's see if we can have a civil conversation.

Open PvP starts at 45, they just didn't change the quest level. Crafted items still sell but due to demand the materials sell for more. Common MMO problem though. Cooking and alchemy are really the only life skills you do yourself. Tools, costumes etc. are crafted by your workers, who also gather raw materials for you. Some processing by you may be required, F2 will show you all the recipes but not the skill required.

    Useful links:
http://www.blackdesertfoundry.com/ - Tons of useful guides, leveling spots, and lists of almost everything you'll need.

http://www.somethinglovely.net/bdo/horses/ - Horse breeding calculator. A must if you don't want to be at the mercy of the RNGods(you will be anyway).

Also, the official forums are a very good source for those tidbits that make life easier. Just make sure you check the date on the post, things have changed a lot since launch.
